I don't know how much longer they can go with Ryu. IF he has another rough outing next time, do you do something?
Completely out of the box/jank thinking but what if you use an opener with him?

Get someone, like maybe Merryweather that can throw gas for the first couple inning then bring Ryu in for hopefully 3 innings? Try and screw with the hitter's timing? Still 2 years left on that deal so theyre going to have to figure something out.

I'd say give him one more start without the bruised hammy and then go from there.

I mean, some pitches sure and when you’re going deep into games your average will drop as you go on.

I don’t recall him topping out at 88, and certainly not with an extra day’s rest and in the first couple innings.

Today, velocity was down a bit but that's not the overall problem. His velocity in his first start and in 2021 was higher compared to his 2020 season. He's leaving his pitches more frequently in the middle of the zone compared to previous years.

He's a vet, so I think he continues to get rope. I think he's in the pen in another month. Hopefully Pearson can get healthy and figure things out by then.

good thing is, last year they wasted no time telling roark he was done. i think they would do the same here if they felt he was not getting better. as we saw last year, you cant win the WS in april but you cant certainly lose it

Glad I paid to watch Tapia lead off and not even try and run out balls in play.

I saw a few 86’s today and I don’t think I saw anything higher than 88 so that’s *way* down. Probably an 87 FB average.

Obviously the location is a problem as well. But if his arm is lively and he’s just not locating you can write that off as just being out of sorts. If you’re topping out at 88 when rested … that’s hard to fix.

I’d like to see his velocity at the start of last season vs. the end.

And obviously this is small sample sizes and we’ll see what his next couple starts look like.

You guys need to chill with Ryu. Guys not even a year removed from looking like a top-10 pitcher in the AL, and has looked good besides ~3 innings this season. Not to mention he doesn't have his catcher and it was an insanely short spring.

Take a deep breath, the dominance has been there at times, the consistency hasn't been.

Looks like the 86s were cutters. The fastball hit 90 a couple times and sat 88-89. Still, the difference between 88-89 Ryu and 90-91 Ryu has always been pretty stark.

But he's not going to succeed with either fastball if he's locating like he did today.

That's his cutter which is 86.

Last season, he struggled even while having a strong velocity for his standards. This start, his velo was down slightly but most of his problems recently have been due to poor control. I have seen the heat maps for his pitching and in 2020 most of his pitches were on the corners but a lot more pitches are in the middle.
