I’m not saying they should completely switch over to “small ball”, but they need to be smarter when facing certain types of pitchers and tweak their approaches against pitchers who rely on change ups and sinkers. Better balance on offense is a good thing.

Right and that's very easy to say because, relative to the league, they're one of the most well balanced teams offensively. Citing a Tampa Bay or a Cleveland doesn't make sense when they have huge holes in their offence.

I was referring to Cleveland from the Bautista years, not this current version.

Seeing the Jays try to hit a pitcher who throws change ups and sinkers is painful. Ground balls and strike outs galore.

But Vladdy, man, we need him. Do you move him down in the order? Or you keep him there and hope he gets hot? We have a bit of a cushion on a playoff spot, but we should be gunning for first wildcard or the division. No time to wait.

That was my point though.

Cleveland pitchers exploited the Jays aggressiveness and when they couldn’t hit home runs the offense dried up.

Okay, and contextually those Jays had clear issues against sliders, curveballs, and sinkers. They were one of the worst teams in the league against those pitches, but elite against fastballs and change ups. I've already stated that this team, by the numbers, are pretty much top 10 in the league against every type of pitch. Sure, you might think they aren't very good against change ups, but it goes to show that other top teams (Yankees, Braves, Cards, Mariners, Rays, and O's) are worse at hitting change ups this season. By the numbers, the offspeed pitch the Jays hit the best against happens to be the change up.

We can then dive deeper into the fact that (amongst playoff caliber teams) the Jays are top 5 in contact rate, top 5 lowest in chase rates, top 5 in lowest whiff rates, 1st in EV, and top 5 in barrels.

Does this offense seem consistent to you? Can they get runners in once on base? Can they manufacture runs against good pitchers who throw off speed stuff? These are the fundamentals I’m referring to.

We shouldn’t exclude the Dodgers from the numbers. They should be the goal of emulation, not looked at as unreachable or treated as a baseball unicorn.

If you mean "consistent" as in they're regularly good and don't have many bad games, then no team is consistent.

They're 8th in wRC+ with runners in scoring position, tied with Atlanta at 118, one point behind the Yankees and a couple ahead of Tampa Bay. So yes, they get runners in once on base.

I don't know exactly how you would define "manufacturing runs", but further to Eyedea's point, take a look at this leaderboard. The Jays are 8th against fastballs. 7th against sliders. 6th against cutters. 8th against curveballs. 7th against changeups. 7th against splitters (though, to be fair, that's probably because they don't have to face Gausman). Where's the weakness there?

To be fair, none of that is Top 5, which is ideally where this team should be with the amount of offensive talent grouped together. I’d argue they should be Top 3 in some of these categories, considering they don’t have the stacked rotation of a team like the Dodgers or the seemingly endless pitching depth of a team like the Rays. They need to make up for it on offense, and by that I mean they need to be significantly better on offense than the Rays, for example.

7/8th is good, it’s top third of the league, but is it actually elite? Because that’s probably where it needs to be to overcome some of the other issues on the roster.

Yea, but this team is right there. They don't have as many issues as people are claiming.
