WJC: 2022 Team USA Roster Talk

Anyone have an early projected lineup:

I don't follow college as much as the CHL but here's my take:

Coronato-Beniers-Samoskevich
Pastujov-Bordeleau-Perreault
Knies-Lucius-Smilanic
Tuch-Boucher-Doan

Sanderson-Faber
Kleven-Hughes
Kaiser-Powell

Commesso/Tynan

I can see Slaggert and Berard on there rather than Tuch and Doan.

Coronato-Beniers-Perreault
Knies-Bordeleau-Samoskevich
Pastujov-Smilanic-Doan
Berard-Slaggert-Boucher
Lucius

Sanderson-Hughes
Kaiser-Faber
Kleven-Morrow
Peart

Commesso
Tynan
Silverstein

I think that’s close, but I think there will be a few tweaks. Slaggert and Berard are both locks. Probably 4C and 4LW, but Berard could play higher. Take Tuch out and Boucher probably is only 13F, if he makes it. I also think Broz is more likely than Pastujov. The lines and pairs may look different than you have them, but that should be all the main players. Morrow will likely also make the defense and then the last goalie is completely up for grabs.

Really nice to see that Perreault finally decided to play for Team USA. Tullio or Tverberg would be decent catch as well. I guess there is no room for Blake or Halliday who are playing really well in USHL.

What's the story with Tverberg? Is he eligible for the US team as well?

Are Tullio and Tverberg even eligible for the US team? And are you not content with Sanderson, Bordeleau, and Perreault? ;)

In seriousness, is it fair to say this is one of the weaker US teams in several years? That forward corps in particular looks spectacularly unimpressive, and the goaltending looks unusually weak. This is clearly Sanderson’s team, it seems, and I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of performance he delivers under the spotlight.

Taking my crack at the lineup after watching some highlights and doing some research. Let me know what you guys think.

Coronato - Bordeleau - Perreault > If they fade Perreault I would move Pastujov here
Knies - Beniers - Doan > Very heavy line that should spend tons of time in the offensive zone
Pastujov - Lucius - Mackie > Wild card line with tons of upside that can be move up as needed
Berard - Slaggert - Smilanic > Shutdown line with tons of energy to go along with talent
Extras: Peterson/Boucher
Bubble: Dickinson, Hanas, Tuch

Sanderson - Hughes > Luke is comfortable on his right side - this team will go as they go...
Kleven - Faber > NoDak shutdown pair with experience
Behrens - Powell > Should be a pesky pairing with great offensive upside
Extras: Truscott - Morrow > Truscott can fill in with Hughes or support a top offensive guy like Morrow
Bubble: Kaiser - Kelley > Minny Duluth pair with experience

Commesso > Gotta give him first shot at taking this deep into the medal round
Tynan > Great story now that he is healthy - could be a guy they rally around
Holt > Tons of upside and could easily step in if needed to win another gold this year and next as he projects to be our starter in 2023 as we hopefully seek a three peat...

Let me know what y'all think!

Cheers!

Both are duals and I guess that Tverberg is because he has least two seasons in US. Tullio in the other hand may not be eligible but I am not 100% sure about that.

Absolutely a weaker year for the USA.

Pastujov with two more tallies tonight, and now up to 18 goals in 18 games in the OHL to lead the league. Gonna be really hard to leave him off at the rate he's going.

The issue is that there’s a proven track record of taking guys playing NCAA over CHL. He has that working against him big-time. He’s also a player that can’t play lower lines. He needs top 9 and PP, and that spot might not be available for him on this team. I think he should make it, but I think he’s very much on the bubble.

I also think people naming Tynan and Holt as the backup goalies might not understand how USAH operates. I very much expect at least one NCAA guy as a backup.

No chance for Cooley? He is on almost every top 5 for the upcoming draft. He seems to be a Larkin type of player, so he could fit on a 4th line too.

I think we've seen a lessening of that trend over the last few years, with guys like the Robertson's, Wolf, Skinner, Kaliyev, and Chmelevski for example.

They've shown that the bulk of the team is still going to be NCAA players, but if a guy is lighting up the CHL, they'll bring in 1-3 of those guys a year. (Especially in Pastujov's case, considering he was a NTDP player before going to the CHL, so they're already very familiar with him) Think the Debrincat situation finally made them change their ways a bit.

Which NCAA goalies are eligible? I would think they would want Holt to get some experience as he will likely be the starter next year unless I am missing somebody.

The problem for Holt is that USA Hockey has shown that they don't pick CHL players on the margins. Either you are clearly good enough or you don't get picked. CHL players are rarely picked for one of the last spots. Someone above mentioned Skinner, but that's actually exactly what I'm talking about. Skinner was only on the team because of the COVID rules. He probably deserved to be the 7th or at least 8th defenseman on merit, but wasn't. He was the 9th defenseman on a team that would've taken 7 without the COVID rules. He was better than multiple NCAA players at the end of the roster, but didn't get a spot over them, almost certainly due to the league he was playing in.

Hockey Canada does the same thing. They rarely will pick an NCAA or USHL player on the margins. They will only pick that player, unless it'd be crazy to leave them off. It's understandable why these organizations do this. They want to promote a product that they have a significant stake in. Maybe this year and the new few will be different, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Specifically with Holt, he was the 3rd goalie last year at the WJC18 behind two goalies that are the same age as him. I would think that Mbereko and Homer are considered by USAH as above him. You or I might quibble with that, but they probably won't. Then there are the 2004 age group guys. There's a good chance both of them will be considered as above a marginal 2003 CHL guy just based on their spot with the NTDP. I also think it's quite likely that Silverstein is a lot better than any of these goalies, so that should also play a part. I suspect he'll be the starter pretty easily next year, and might even get a spot this year.

I should've said NCAA and USHL though, as its true that none of these guys between Mbereko, Homer, Silverstein, and Muszelik are yet playing NCAA. The four NTDP goalies though between the U19 and U20 age groups is always a good place to start for the goalie candidates. CHL guys really need to stand out, not just be a marginal upgrade. Noah Grannan as the second 2002 NTDP goalie probably is also another option under consideration for this year. I would guess that Tynan is the back up this year just because he has a decent track record in the CHL prior to this season, although this year has been a slight struggle. The third goalie will probably be a younger goalie, but I think Mbereko probably has the early advantage as the 2003 NTDP #1 goalie. If anyone else has a chance, maybe its Silverstein, but his biggest obstacles are staying fit and that they don't like picking 17 year olds.

I completely agree! It will be very interesting to see what they do!
