Sounds like Drysdale been all over the map during the preseason so I'd expect him to be available for the WJR.

Byfield's injury may be a blessing for Canadian fans - he will be recovering in early December and a 3rd bite at the WJR apple might be in the offing. Why wouldn't LA send him to build his confidence? Hopefully, (this time) he won't disappoint.

Sillinger and Neighbours are getting a lot of buzz but is it enough to keep them up through December? Maybe one sticks?

You have to think that almost all of them will be available.

No thanks for Byfield, he can stay with the kings. Don't want him around. He's a mirage.

Huge, fast, talented -- doesn't create anything / fails under defensive pressure.

At least for now, Hendrix Lapierre has made the NHL with Washington
I think he’ll have his 9 game try out and be back in the QMJHL - Same with Neighbours.
Sillinger is the only one who IMO who could stay the whole year (along with who I outlined in the op)

This is the list of eligible players for the WJC that made their teams rosters out of camp - I put a star beside Drysdale because I dont think there is any way he is on the team.

Jamie Drysdale*
Mason McTavish
Hendrix Lapierre
Cole Sillinger
Seth Jarvis
Quinten Byfield
Jake Neighbours
Cole Perfetti

Cant all of them be sent down to AHL?

A team without them:

Johnson-Guenther-Wisdom
Sourdif-Wright-Stankoven
Foudy-Bedard-Foerster
C.Savoie-Bourque-Perreault
Greig

Guhle-Clarke
Power-Hunt
Lambos-O'Rourke
Ceulemens

Cossa
Garand

McTavish, Neighbours, Jarvis and Lapierre would have to go back to junior if they don't stick with their NHL teams.

Byfield, Perfetti and Sillinger are eligible to be assigned to the AHL

Even without those guys these guys won't be on the team. Mathew Savoie will be on it but not his brother. Mathew's been better than him for a few years now. Wisdom probably won't be on there either although I'd have him on there if it was up to me.....I believe he's injured for now.

Good Lord, a lot of these Canadian kids are starting fast. Not sure how to feel.
Not sure if Lapierre and McTavish stay with their teams past the 9 games so there's still hope they come and play. On a positive note though, although team Canada likes to have older teams in these tournaments...if these guys aren't available for the tournament, it's not like we're going to be struggling at center with Shane Wright and Conor Bedard.

I expect most of the guys who are with the NHL teams to be available. I wouldn't be comfortable relying too much on Wright or especially Bedard though. 17 year olds have been good contributors for Canada certain years, though they almost always perform at a level a bit lower than usual compared to the 18 and 19 year olds. 16 year olds have never contributed a whole lot for Canada. There can always be a first time though.

I'd still take each of them on the team. If the team can use Wright as a second line centre (or first with relatively easy minutes) and Bedard as a depth scoring option then that would be great. Of course if they surprised and dominate that's even better.

Obviously he was older as a young 18 year old but pre-draft Lafrenière was Canada’s best player by far the last time they won; I can see a near 18 year old Shane Wright having a similar impact (think he’s a better player). Bédard is a different case since he’s less physically developed but he should be on the roster as well

There have been draft eligible 18 year olds who have excelled. Tavares is another. Lafreniere had played 2 full CHL seasons by that tournament and been in the previous WJC, at this point Wright has played 1 and never played the WJC. Guys like Crosby, McDavid, Stamkos all contributed in top roles at 17 but none of them was leading the team either. Lindros did lead Canada as a 17 year old but he was physically about 28 when he was 17. I could see Wright having a very strong tournament but I'd rather if he didn't have to lead the team. I will be very (pleasantly) surprised if Bedard stars for Canada at the 2022 WJC.

It seems as though we got to have the same conversation every year when it comes to 16 year old and 17 year old players at the WJHC. I expect Shane to have a decent to strong tournament, but if he's our Number 1 center and the go to guy, then I don't expect a gold medal performance from that team. As for Bedard... it's better to expect nothing from 16 year olds at the U20. that way you avoid disappointment and unwarranted criticism of a young and talented player. Look for Bedard in the '23 tournament.

I agree with your evaluation and have been saying this ever sense I had my first look at him when he was 16. I do think he would be fine in a middle 6 role with Team Canada but his loss won't be greatly felt.

My hot take for this year is Zach L'Heureux makes the team. He is a big physical 2 way player. Skates well. Could play a bottom 6 role and come back as a leader the next year.

He's the type of player Hockey Canada loves to take over perhaps more skilled guys. Think Dawson Mercer 2 years ago.

Yes we're certainly in agreement. I'm looking forward to seeing how these guys do this year in a more normal environment. In terms of looking into the future and big boy teams the 2022 WJC team could be very exciting.

He’ll definitely battle for a bottom-6 spot. I see the roster with the following forwards as locks:
Johnson, Perfetti, Guenther, McTavish, Wright, Jarvis, Lapierre, Foerster, Neighbours - That means, assuming all the players above return to their junior teams; there is 3 spots to battle for plus maybe 2 extra’s, thats not even taking into account Byfield may be sent back.
L’hereaux will be in that group batting for 4/5 spots barring any injurys; or the players above not being available.

Why do you think Mctavish gets sent down? He looked like one of Anaheim’s better players already.

Its just hypotheticals - I think McTavish gets sent to the WJC squad from Anaheim in all honesty; and its been 1 game and he wasn’t even one of their best players, he was solid.

I think Will Cuylle might surprise and make the team. I know it was previously thought he’d be on the team and then he wasn’t on the summer camp roster for some reason, but he had a great prospect camp and training camp. As far as Rangers prospects are concerned, I’d give him a higher chance to make this team than Othmann. I think he’s the better player for now.

Perreault and Foerster both scored in their 1st AHL games for the season, Sebrango got an assist with Grand Rapids.
