Love talking prospects, hate ranking them.

Most of the list I've seen play at least 5+ full games. When you get towards the back that can be less, or even just bits, pieces, shift by shift, and reading for a few guys. I usually try to watch more of the guys in the 15-50 range of the draft during the early summer, but I've been pretty swamped with bar prep. Beyond that I watched so much U of M hockey this year that my other amateur viewings took a backseat.

My NTDP and WHL lean is pretty apparent, but I'd rather go to bat for guys I've seen play a lot.

Weird draft, glhf.

Korchinski as your top defender at 4? McGroarty at 5? Slafkovsky at 8? Chesley at 11? Bold takes, my friend.

Can you help me understand Chesley at 11? I just don't see the upside/offense.

The recent mock drafts (Youtubers) have Savoie going before Wings pick.

NBC mock draft today:

8. Detroit Red Wings (Brock Otten) – Pavel Mintyukov, D, Saginaw (OHL)

I have a feeling that the Wings have their eye on one of Gauthier or Kasper, but with both gone, they turn their attention to a player right in their backyard. The Saginaw Spirit and Red Wings have had a long-standing relationship and there is no doubt that they have a ton of intel on Mintyukov. His offensive upside is through the roof due to his creativity and playmaking abilities. The defensive game needs refinement, but he is a moldable player who could look terrific beside Moritz Seider in the future.

Mintyukov is a dude, for sure. I would not be surprised if we go that route. I think he's right up there with Jiricek and Nemec. No such thing as too many defensemen.

Makes you wonder what former Russian NHL'ers think of this...Like - better get the hell outta dodge real quick!

Conscription age is 18 -27, requirement is one year of service. This has to factor into the draft, one year of lost development plus do you really want someone that killed Ukrainians playing on your team? I wonder how hard it is to get a work visa for a Russian to play in the AHL if a kid wants to defect.

They just eliminated the age limit for enlistment, so I suppose anyone that hasn't served one year could be in trouble eventually.

Disclaimers: I don't claim to be good at this or have seen these guys a lot or more than on youtube highlights. If players are clearly missing and should be included within this list, I just didn't get to them. I ranked based on players I want for the Red Wings. While I do subscribe to BPA, position definitely influenced guys up/down a spot or two

Can you help me understand Chesley at 11? I just don't see the upside/offense.

So Chesley impressed me most of all the '22 draft eligible NTDP kids in his D-1 year, and I had him at #2 to start the year. I dropped him about ten slots due to the lack of production and some of the rawness, as well as other players moving up.

Behind Korchinski I think he's the best neutral zone puck transporter in the draft class, and I also think he has the best shot from the blueline of this draft class. I think the goalscoring is reflected in his 12 goals in 59 games, despite little powerplay opportunity, as well as two goals in six games at the U18s. I've seen him make poor decisions, but in general I think he's got a good breakout pass. I think he's a reliable, combative defender. Closes gaps pretty well and battles hard. I think he's one of a small group of blueliners in this class who has the combination of mobility, defensive commitment, and offense (despite the lack of production) to potentially play big 5v5 minutes and both special teams.

Offensively, I think his offense was really hindered this year by the NTDP blue line personnel. Playing with a 5'8 Hutson, a 5'9 Duke, and a 5'10 Casey in the top four really hindered Chesley's ability to get aggressive at 5 on 5 and also limited his powerplay opportunities. Frankly, those first three players just can't really defend much, so that left Chesley to shoulder a lot of that weight when he's more of a true two-way blueliner in my eyes. I enjoy Lane Hutson, but he pinches so frequently that I feel like Chesley was playing stay-at-home much more than he realistically will at higher levels.

I'd liken him to Kaiden Guhle, I think he can develop along a similar track. Maybe not a top pairing player, although I wouldn't rule that out, but a versatile modern defender.

Ultimately it's a really, really tricky group of defenders for me to rank. My gut tells me Nemec in the top 10 is still a touch high. I love what Mintyukov does in the offensive zone, I'd love to see him alongside a guy like Seider who I think could put him in a position to really showcase what he does best. I like pretty much everything about Mateychuk's game too.

Can you update the title to have 2022 draft in it, and can we try to use the same title for this every year?

I'm not gonna pretend I know squat about players taken in rounds 2-7, but do like what I have seen on highlights from Buchelnikov. Hopefully we can get him over from Russia.

I'm beyond thrilled with the Kasper pick.
