I'm just curious, has anyone gotten a pick right outside of the first round in say... the past 5 years?
Yes sir, one of my proudest moments was to predict that Red Wings pick Kienan Draper.
#187 Jack Smith
-I don't know anything anything about Jack Smith, he seems to be left handed forward from Minnesota. In my list, the last draft pick is Kienan Draper. But i didn't find him or then he was already picked in the draft simulator.
All the other predictions were waaayyy off  and luckily so, reading them now is just pure horror. Some users had Niederbach and Wallinder, i remember thinking of Niederbach back in 2020 that he seemed a bit like a Hakan-pick. Wallinder was a #20 overall pick in my list in 2020.

Here is who I would take with Detroit's picks:

1st--Kasper (several on you on this board have convinced me, plus his shift-by-shfit video is just WOW)
2nd--Luneau. (this pick is almost impossible to predict, because someone will fall--Gaucher if it is him)
2nd--Bystedt
3rd--Furlong (starting to see his name in this range, one of my two favorite mid-round D)
4th--Gendron (goal scorer who skates really well)
4th--Engstrom (my favorite of the D after the top 50)
4th--Wagner (production wasn't great but scouts seem to love him, plus the Swedish thing)
5th--Vidicek
7th--Hellberg (super young Swede who is all potential)
7th--Harvey

What are you asking about?

If we ranked someone outside the first and they became good? Or if someone predicted who Detroit drafted outside the first?

These threads are for rankings… not a mock draft.

Predicted a Red Wings Rd 2 -7 pick correctly.

What's the point of doing the research if they don't get picked by your team? I just stick to the first pick because that is easier to predict, and the top 10 players in the draft usually have a lasting career in the NHL, except maybe Zadina. He sucks, lol.

Just about all top 10 picks are on someone's draft list.

In round 2 and beyond -
Last year I had Buium and Savage and even Dower-Nilsson on my draft list.
The year before I had Wallinder, Niederbach, Hanas, Bednar and Cotton on my draft list.

It's still too early to make my list right now but I feel like I'm starting to get closer to a list.

Well if you make a list of 100+ prospects, obviously some of them are going to be picked. That's not the same as having one prospect per pick.

You list isn't so much a draft list as it is a prospects ranking, based off of other rankings. It's not like you're watching videos on every single kid. Last draft I watched every video available on Edvinsson and Clarke, and the choice was obvious for me.

I usually go about 60 deep.
I use EP and HP a lot, a lot, reading rankings and scouting reports and then balancing that a bit with oositional need,
I still view HP as way better. f*** all the pictures and graphics that just waste space. And EP is f***ing repetitive. It also strikes me as fanboyish at times.
Still, it seems there's a wealth of info in their guide.

I like to do it because it's fun for 1, but I also participate in a number of fantasy hockey leagues that have a prospect draft. We generally have our drafts well before the NHL has there's so it's in my best interest to create my own list.

It's not about getting picks right as much as it's something to discuss and follow throughout the season. I've watched more games to watch prospects than I have Red Wings games over the past 4 years and I know that's saved my sanity at times.

It would be silly to say that other lists don't influence my ranking, I do try my best to ignore outside opinions. Sometimes somebody that I like will mention a certain player and I may research them and like them; but for the most part my list is my own creation. I also have 2 models that I use to help determine my list, one is a new logistic regression model and the other is more of a comparative analysis tool. With these tools I feel as though I can create a list that is an accurate representation of "my style" of player without seeing every player play.

In the end I think most of us that are this into prospects do it for fun and to add our own flair into the discussion.

somewhere around nothing
1. Montreal Canadiens: Shane Wright
- Not the best player in this draft imo but probably most guaranteed pick. Since every insider and expert have Wright as 1st overall, im not gonna fight the windmills here.

2. New Jersey Devils: Juraj Slafkovsky
- I can not think of anyone who's more perfect pick than Slafkovsky for the Devils. Future top-6 powerforward & PP1 net front guy and perfect linemate for Hughes and Hischier.

3. Arizona Coyotes: Matt Savoie
- Best player in this draft imo. Elite hockey IQ, elite hands, elite speed, everything what Savoie does is elite. His size and uncertainty of his position drops him a bit and also because Slaf is a perfect fit for the Devils. But i wouldn't worry about his position, Savoie is elite, it doesn't matter if he's center or winger. He's also quite stocky already and his going to get more muscle on the way.

4. Seattle Kraken: Simon Nemec
-
🎶I'd get it one piece at a time and it wouldn't cost me a dime🎶 I've heard from reliable source that Ron Francis sings this song all the time. Last year he selected his center foundation piece, this year is defenseman turn.

5. Philadelphia Flyers: Logan Cooley
- Lucky day for Philly, BPA and they get Giroux's replacement immediately.

6. Columbus Blue Jackets: David Jiricek
- Last year Kekäläinen picked every center who wasn't nailed down, but Seth Jones hasn't been replaced yet. But Jiricek will fix that problem.

7. Ottawa Senators: Jonatan Lekkerimäki
- This is like asking what to give a rich person as a birthday gift. Ottawa wants more goals, therefore best sniper in this draft goes to Ottawa.

8. Detroit Red Wings: Marco Kasper
- fast, smart, hard working 200-foot game center who plays in SHL. Yzerman is written all over this one.

9. Buffalo Sabres: Cutter Gauthier
- Buffalo is looking to change the team culture and there's no better way than to draft Gauthier.

10. Anaheim Ducks: Kevin Korchinski
- Pat Verbeek worked several years for Yzerman and he learned one thing, you can never go wrong when you pick a mobile 6'2'' defenseman.

11. San Jose Sharks: Conor Geekie
- Sharks keep building their future core, adding one more potential top-6 center

12. Columbus Blue Jackets: Frank Nazar the 3rd
- BPA, Kekäläinen steals another center.

13. New York Islanders: Joakim Kemell
- Isles needs offense and goals, Kemell brings in both.

14. Winnipeg Jets: Denton Mateychuk
- Sounds like there's going to be rebuild in Winnipeg, but at least the defense needs re-tooling. Mateychuk is a good piece to start with.

15. Vancouver Canucks: Danila Yurov
- BPA, they got Podkolzin already and they signed Kuzmenko. It is going to be easier lure Yurov along when he has his fellow russians already in the team.

16. Buffalo Sabres: Brad Lambert
- Buffalo takes a calculated risk, Lambert has the skill but he still needs maturing.

17. Nashville Predators: Rutger McGroarty
- BPA

18. Dallas Stars: Isaac Howard
- Skill is disappearing from Dallas, Howard can change that.

19. Los Angeles Kings: Jimmy Snuggerud
- Dustin Brown's replacement eventually.

20. Washington Capitols: Pavel Mintyukov
- BPA

21. Pittsburg Penguins: Liam Öhgren
- Could be a future trade bait or one first pieces of post-Crosby era.

22. Anaheim Ducks: Noah Östlund
- Middle-6 center/winger, nice backup to have if and when Zegras/McTavish gets injured.

23. St. Louis Blues: Tristan Luneau
- Once young and powerful Blues D-corps is starting to age up, they should start preparing for a re-tooling. Since d-men takes longer to develop.

24. Minnesota Wild: Ivan Miroshnichenko
- Minnesota use to be Finnesota, but now Minnesota have newly found success with russian's. At this point Miroshnichenko is worh to gamble.

25. Toronto Maple Leafs: Ryan Chesley
- Another cheap d-men in sight, in the near future for the Leafs.

26. Montreal Canadiens: Nathan Gaucher
- Since the draft is in Montreal, Habs has to pick a kid from QMJHL.

27. Arizona Coyotes: Lian Bichsel
- Coyotes haven't really stocked up their defense yet but now with the 2nd first round pick they take the best d-man available.

28. Buffalo Sabres: Maveric Lamoureux
- A pair for Power.

29. Edmonton Oilers: Filip Mesar
- Kenny goes BPA, salary cap requires Oilers to find skill.

30. Winnipeg Jets: Owen Pickering
- Jets keeps building their blueline.

31. Tampa Bay Lightning: Jiri Kulich
- BPA

32. Arizona Coyotes: Ty Nelson
- Another D-man to Arizona and a potential pair for Bichsel.

Isaac Howard?
Don't know the man. :)
There are probably a bunch of these guys who I never wanted/looked at, in part because of where they are ranked, and who I skipped as I was filling the list out.

Looking at him now, a 5'9-5'10 LW who scores 6/9 on skill and will probably be gone at 40 - so I doubt It matters much to my list.

I went through the Black Book and transcribed the players and their ratings in the five areas. Good way to find new players who didn't earn a rank/rating.

Made the final touches to my rankings now that the draft is only a couple weeks away. As you go down the list the less I've seen of guys so bear that in mind. The top 32 I have quite a bit of confidence in however. Nazar, Kemell, Savoie, and Kasper are all interchangeable to me at 8, you can even add Yurov and Gauthier to that mix

Have since talked myself out of Gauthier and think I was a little low on Mintyukov and Jiricek. Yurov falling due to Russian factor getting worse.

I think Howard is one of the guys I could end up being most wrong about. His production was right up there with Nazar and Cooley.

Yeah, to be honest I never looked at him until you pointed him out.
Still, I'd rather have Nazar or Gauthier.
But I don't really get why guys like Snuggerud or McGroarty are ranked so much higher than him. Just size, I guess.
