If you could rein him in a bit while maintaining that creativity you'd have a hell of a player

I may be old school in the idea that I don't mind overly much if a player hasn't yet developed defensive chops in his draft year, always feel that can be taught/learned. What he does with the puck and in terms of scoring/skating though? That's some natural talent to mold.

I don't worry so much about defensive short comings, and I don't get too upset over errors of commission, I would just want him to be a bit smarter. I saw him in a game earlier this season where he circled back behind his defense, tried to split 2 forecheckers got stripped and scored on. Now he made up for it later with a 3/4 ice rush

I’m very much in the BPA camp. that being said, the value of a RHD seems so high right now that I think you pick the best one at each pick. That way we could solve our own problems at the position in the NHL and depth wise but also try to corner the market for future trade value.

I’m only half serious about that strategy.

From watching more NTDP I really hope Vegas craters to put us in Cutter Gauthier territory as he'd bring some snarl this team lacks. I also realize that even with a lottery win we should never pick Cooley as all you hear when watching is faceoff win by Cooley, another faceoff won by Cooley

Might he be a viable consideration in the 5-8 range? Doesn't seem like a ridiculous reach at this point...

My top 10 has about 17 guys in it lol. So many permutations for that top 10 at the moment, but I guess there’s still a lot of games left to play.

So I wouldn’t worry as a team about being accused of “reaching” for guys like him. just take who you like best and don’t worry about it.

In 2-3 years

…which is better than a decade-long question mark. It shouldn’t be TOO hard to find a 2-3 year stop gap, right?

And you don’t have to stress too much over the weak right side over those 30 “placeholder” months because help is on the way :)

Probably less than 2 years.

I'd rather they not reach. 20-ish seems like a point for Gauthier but the top 11 seems pretty established.

Bob has him going that late? Jeez, I thought he’d be much higher than that.

On the other hand, it’s starting to look like we could have a pretty awesome pick for the earliest of the other 1st rounders - one of my favorites are bound to fall to that range. I like the depth in the first round outside of the top ten.

I think Bob has him at 13.

I'm seeing him pretty consistently in the teens in many people's rankings. He seems to be on the rise.

If say, we were to be picking at 8OV - would taking him there really be any more of a reach than taking Quinn at the same spot in 2020?

That implies that there weren't people who firmly had Quinn in the top 10 though. I haven't heard the same about Gauthier yet but there is still a lot of time for risers to rise. He might be a darkhorse for that 8 spot. I'm not there on him yet.

That's about as high as I can see him getting but there's a lot to like about a big kid that's fast, skilled and pugnacious. It also helps that he's versatile in that he swung from 3LW to 1C and dominated those games, not to mention going head to head with Cooley at the prospects challenge

Draft Analyst (Steve Kornianos, who posts a lot on HF) has him at #6 I believe. He makes a good argument for it.
