I'll take Chychrun for Smith, Zacha and McLeod. But anyone who thinks the Devils -- deeper at LD than another position -- are trading #2 overall for him needs to lay off the psychedelics.

This makes incredible sense.

Which means we're about to read something saying the Devils could trade #2 overall to Philadelphia straight up for James Van Riemsdyk.

I am not saying anything one way the other about trading #2 for him, but the Devils being "deep" at LD is kind of a mirage. I don't care about the Bahls and Okhotiuk's of the world when it comes to a proven top 4 guy. Not to mention Graves is only signed for 1 more year.

This notion that the Devils don't need an upgrade at LD is absurd to me quite frankly.

I'm fine with a pick of Wright at #2, just not Cooley. He's redundant to the talent already at center, and lacks the upside of Wright or Slafkovsky by a pretty fair degree. I'm not taking a "safe center" at #2 overall when my team has needs all over the place.

Wright's a different story, because his offensive upside is greater than Hischier's and he's a right-shot, which compliments what we already have. He would also be the best pure shooter of our centers. But Cooley would be another left-shot center who lacks the upside to supplant Hughes or Hischier in the top two, while not offering a single skill which would be the best among our centers.

Frankly, at #2 overall it's possible Cooley can have the highest floor if Montreal takes Wright #1. But he won't have the highest ceiling, and he's redundant to the line-up we already have. As such, he's strictly a "luxury pick" for NJ. Cooley would be a great pick for Arizona at #3 or Seattle at #4 or Philly at #5 (where my mock draft has him going), but I think he'd be an extremely myopic pick for NJ at #2.
I’m on board with passing on Cooley.
Take Sla Wright or Nemec /Jirichek

The only thing Chychrun has proven is that he's good for a lot of time on the IR. The Devils have needs at literally every position except LD. And he's not worth even close to a top 10 pick, much less #2 overall.

what in the HELL is going on!? So many rumors coming out good GOD almighty.

It's not even noon yet! My head is spinning and getting no work done!

I agree, and I really don't think Chychrun is all that great either. He's pretty good, but people in the media are acting like he's Nick Lidstrom or something.

He's a pretty good #3 defenseman. That's it. I don't think he's a legitimate top-pairing guy the way Hamilton is. He's either your 2nd pair anchor or your 1st pair passenger, and we already have a younger and cheaper guy to do that in Siegenthaler. Now Chychrun is definitely better offensively but nowhere close enough to warrant #2 overall.

Spending premium assets on the defense without first addressing the goaltending would be a monumental blunder.
