If we got Tkachuck and went hard after Johnny , Shara is left twisting in the wind with no spot to play that’s makes sense . Him as a 3rd line winger is a waste .
I’d include him in a package if that’s the case .
There is more and more smoke about Tkachuck possibly being moved .
I honest to God think there might be a slight possibility we could end up with Tkachuck and Gaudreau …. We have the assets to do so ..

I don’t see a realistic scenario where the Devils can pay Tkachuk and Gaudreau long term. That’s in addition to Hischier, Hughes, Bratt, Hamilton, the new Severson contract, a new goalie this year, and any other extensions that they have to hand out in the future.

Squeezing in one of Gaudreau/Tkachuk and maintaining flexibility moving forward will be tough enough as it is. Adding both is just completely unrealistic.

Just make the gd pick. I can’t see a realistic deal that makes sense.

Slaf going 1 really screws it all up because that was the easiest pick we could have made. I still think we should just take Nemec and call it a day.

Chances are Bratt would be in the trade to Calgary if they ever made that move I feel like. Not sure how we could afford a goalie this offseason if we got Tkachuk + Gaudreau and still paid Bratt.

Yeah it’s one or the other. The choice to me is obvious. Johnny is both the better player (albeit older) and the cheaper (asset wise) option. We give up nothing to get him rather than have to give up assets that could be key contributing pieces on their ELCs.

Bratt would have to be the one on the way out in a Tkachuk deal in that case.

otherwise yeah I agree. And I am team "cap doesn't matter"

The entire premise of the Tkachuk trade is moving 2nd overall for him. No chance we move 2nd overall and Bratt just to get Tkachuk. He’s not McDavid.

Absolutely I would, but that's a bit different from what's being implied by Dreger

lol Yeah of course we’d do that. It’d be one of the biggest steals ever. Move down 1 spot to get Chycrun for Zacha or Smith?? I’d be convinced they’re trying to prank us

I dont care about position when it comes to the top of the draft. I want the best player.

They could always move Wright to the wing as well if necessary. No team has ever had TOO MANY Good centers in the history of the NHL.
I'm fine with a pick of Wright at #2, just not Cooley. He's redundant to the talent already at center, and lacks the upside of Wright or Slafkovsky by a pretty fair degree. I'm not taking a "safe center" at #2 overall when my team has needs all over the place.

Wright's a different story, because his offensive upside is greater than Hischier's and he's a right-shot, which compliments what we already have. He would also be the best pure shooter of our centers. But Cooley would be another left-shot center who lacks the upside to supplant Hughes or Hischier in the top two, while not offering a single skill which would be the best among our centers.

Frankly, at #2 overall it's possible Cooley can have the highest floor if Montreal takes Wright #1. But he won't have the highest ceiling, and he's redundant to the line-up we already have. As such, he's strictly a "luxury pick" for NJ. Cooley would be a great pick for Arizona at #3 or Seattle at #4 or Philly at #5 (where my mock draft has him going), but I think he'd be an extremely myopic pick for NJ at #2.

You’d think he is the way he’s revered by some.

I mean I don't agree with trading those guys either, I'm just saying it would lead Bratt as the odd man out on the forwards side considering the huge contracts and still question marks in goal. I rather Bratt + 2nd overall > Tkachuk

I’m fine with Nemec, Wright, or Cooley. Jiricek’s knee surgery scares me. I’d also even be fine with a reach for Gauthier.

Chychrun has really only had 1 elite season. He seems more like a very good #3 or solid #2. Not sure I would prefer to hedge our bets for that, especially with some injury concerns too

I never said it is. 2nd overall plus Bratt is a massive overpayment. I’m not sure where this love affair is coming from, but Tkachuk is not worth that.

People wanting a physical forward who's elite I'm guessing + the family ties with Fitz making him want to stay here, I like him but I wouldn't go overboard on him as well.

I’m pretty much at the point where I don’t move the pick at all unless it’s to say move down for 6+12. I don’t feel like trading the pick+ for a current star. I will take my chances on signing Gaudreau and if that happens then having those pieces I kept as potential key contributing pieces on their ELCs would be massive.

Chychrun has missed 117 games over the past 6 seasons, about a quarter of all games he could have played in. Sounds like he'd fit right in.
I'll take Chychrun for Smith, Zacha and McLeod. But anyone who thinks the Devils -- deeper at LD than another position -- are trading #2 overall for him needs to lay off the psychedelics.

This makes incredible sense.

Which means we're about to read something saying the Devils could trade #2 overall to Philadelphia straight up for James Van Riemsdyk.

Dregger isn’t just a random Twitter account though.
