Welcome.

We argued Slafkovsky in the past thread. I wont rinse and repeat everytime. First, Slafkovsky doesnt have any positioning issue, in every games, every shifts he played at the Olympics, his positioning and read of the developing play was excellent, his anticipation got him plenty of opportunities. Secondly, watching him play and saying he doesnt play an heavy game is total non sense to me, thats actually what stands out the most about his game and I explained him in details what an heavy game was about, puck retrieval is what really matters, finishing your check is only bonus.

Third, I actually have Wright ranked 7th on my last list. While the effort level has been better lately, he still isnt as nearly dominant as a top 5 pick should be and Ive pointed out numerous times what bothers me about his game. You have skilled guys that compete at a much higher level night in, night out.

Yeah, heavy game, doesn't finish his checks. Sounds leeeeeegit.

I think most of us will agree that when Armia is on, he plays an heavy game. His size/reach/mobility/stick work/stickhandling and puck protection gives his opponents alot of trouble and headaches to deal with. Now imagine a young Armia on steriodes, with much higher offensive skills and finishing, thats Slafkovsky.

Yeah, that's why I have him 3rd. The stuff I don't like in his game is stuff that can be fixed. I don't think Wright or Cooley have to fix anything, by contrast, so that's why I have them ahead.
Hmmm the compete lvl of Wright seems to be a big question mark. For Cooley, a guy like Slaf definitly have size and strengh over him. I think all prospect in the top5-6 have their qualities and defaults, it's going to be interesting to look at this draft in 4-5years.

I was watching the U18s for fun and don't know what happened there. Wright seemed engaged and was a handful.

Im from Slovakia and I saw Slaf many times and let me tell you this. He's better on smaller NA ice than big EU ice. Probably the main reasons why he performed well at the Olympics. Also Craig Ramsays offensive style of hockey suits him more than defensive in TPS.

It's pretty well documented that he was a better prospect 2 years ago than now. I'm not saying he wont make it but he's not a "perfect" prospect as others claim.

IMO, the first tier goes like this:

Jiricek
Wright
Slafkovsky
Cooley
....
In the run to make the top tier: Nazar (+), Savoie and Nemec.

The good news is, we will get one of theses guys no matter what happen till the end of the season.

Because he’s a right shooting d-man with a ton of talent, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nemec go in the top 5 with the other mentioned players above. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah, that's kind of my question there. What happened ? If I could interview him, I'd be really interested in knowing why he doesn't have that engagement anymore. Did taking a break make him realize just how much commitment his level of play needed ? Some people only realize the craziness of high level competition when they're out of it. Or, is he having problems adapting ? Is he noticing it ? Maybe there are hockey related reasons for it (trying to think more on the ice on translatable plays, pacing himself?. It just makes me wonder.

Yes its mesmerising. I know missing a year of hockey at this age hurt...but it's the same for all the CHL players in this years draft. Maybe the competition is harder now and he doesn't have "it" in him, i don,t know. Im pretty sure he will become a good second liner but he was looking like a total star two years ago, it sucks.

Here's the most important question -

Who's got the best hands in the draft?

Barrett Hayton need not apply.
It's hard to think it's not Savoie overall, who might not have the absolute best hands at normal speed, but at high speed, he's at least 1 standard of deviation higher than everyone (if not 2)

It's funny to read that Craig Ramsay coaches an offensive style of hockey because he is one of the best defensive forwards I've ever seen. He would have won a pile of Selkes had his career not been played at the same time as Bob Gainey. Ramsay did win one late in his career.

Ramsay's definitely a student of the game. Incredibly intelligent hockey lifer.

Take a look at Caufield's goal tonight. He knows that as the weak side winger his defensive responsibilities are pretty minimal to begin with, and with Hamilton coming down the boards, his dman at least has the shooting lane covered. As soon as it looks likely that Suzuki will get the puck, he's already gone (before Suzuki has the puck). By the time Suzuki makes the pass, Cole is in a full sprint and picks up the pass at the opposing blueline.

That's what I'm talking about positioning and an advanced understanding the game. Instead, Slaf would be somewhere in the center of the ice, probably picking up Zacha, ending up pretty low in his zone, with opposing players to beat back up ice, thus making it more difficult for his team to breakout. Positioning and understanding the game is also about knowing when to cheat, not just about backchecking hard and picking up your man. That's 101. What Cole did is grad school.

He has been under the radar for the past 3 years, he has not played Hockey last year. His pace has been picking up, development is not linear. IMO there is no better forward in this draft. People are just disappointed because he does not project as a Franchise top 1C... Flash news : not all draft have a Crosby, McDavid or MacKinnon in them.

Sounds a lot like Tavares, seemed to have been bored his last year in Junior before getting traded to London. He gets flack cause of where he’s playing but when he was on the Islanders he was very good - wouldn’t complain drafting another JT as he’s still by far the best forward of that draft. Hedman might be the more valuable player tho
