I'm surprised there isn't any talk on what will probably actually happen at the draft. All this talk about Gauthier v. Kemmel, and "I want one of the RDs," is all grand and all, but where is the conversation about, "who is in the 12-25 range, who would be considered a reach at 7OA, but would fit into the sens gas-lighting draft ethos and trying to pull magic tricks out of their arses?"

His name is Rutger McGroarty.

I'm not even going to get excited. After watching a bit of Boucher this year and comparing it to Sillinger it is hard to have faith in the scouting staff's most recent draft and to have faith they won't botch 7th overall. I hope they get it right but that was an egregious miss.

I’ve never Felt as confident about Sens prospects as I have this last few years.

The shift in drafting, and making sure each pick has strong character, seems to we working well for us. I suspect that the scouting team has decided that guys with strong character are more likely to meet and potentially surpass their assessed potential because they possess the drive to do so.

We pick late risers, guys with at least one high level skill, but everyone also has to be able to skate, and have an edge to their game. We truly look to be focused on building a playoff type team.

We can all argue back and forth about picks, and be down on guys like Boucher, but I have a good feeling that everyone is going to fall in line with this team as it solidifies. There were a ton of people in here who wanted Zadina, and were downplaying Brady even through the start of this season.

Guys that work this hard, and play the way our team does, make it hard not to love them and root for them. Boucher and Ostapchuk are going to be fan favourites along with Grieg and Kleven, and we have plenty of high level skills in there with Stu, Bath, Norris, Sanderson, Chabot, Formy to make everyone who is less excited about the tough game, happy.

We’re about to add a bunch more guys from the first few rounds this season, guys that undoubtably will be exciting in their own way.

I have never been this excited about a Sens team potential. This team is built to play Ice-Tray hockey :)

Pickering is a very toolsy D that could be of interest.

Ohgren had a massive finish to the year and has NHL tools.

Chesley's production improved significantly as the year went on and he plays very physical.

Bischel is massive, skates well, played against men this year and appears to be rising in the rankings.

Could see them being very interested in those guys. I'd say 7th is too high to pick any of them but the Sens staff has proven that if they like a guy they'll draft him pretty much anywhere.

We almost never get the guy we want unless we are drafting in the top 5. Some of you are begging to be disappointed.

I was thinking through who would be a stereotypical Sens pick and I came up with Ohgren. And I can also see them targeting Chesley. Both fill a need and should be good players. I actually think they're kind of realistic in this range. People would call them reaches but they both have nice track records, it's not a reach in the dark like Boucher. Ohgren has the best production stats of just about any junior forward in the draft class.

Pickering is a super long term play and I don't think they are going to be patient enough for that, especially since he's LD. And Bichsel is an angry angry man that I'm sure they want, but he's an LD and they already took Kleven to play that same role (though Bichsel is better) so I don't think they'd take either of them this early.

Are the leafs really the team we wanna compare ourselves too?

However the Leafs build their team I wanna do the opposite, because it isn't working. Who cares how many points ya get in the regular season if you can't get past round 1?

Size, character, passion, and tough to play against that seems to be what wins teams cups. Sure we need some skill in there too, but it seems to be those role players who really seal the deal.
I value skating, puck management ability including puck handling & passing ability, and shooting ability highly. After that "tough to play against" meaning a physical player who can and does hit to disrupt (not necessarily just to hurt) is important too. I suppose "tough to play against" could also mean someone who is not easily deked or not slow or not passive (soft non-checker) or very strong defensively. Size comes later and probably is correlated with "tough to play against" as I define it. Some players are big, like Sanford and Logan Brown, but too passive and sometimes too slow. I agree size is important but probably more important for defensemen than forwards. I like players who can skate fast and accelerate quickly. If "passion" means hustle or energetic, then I value that too.

I’m starting to warmup to a Gauthier type pick. Power rules in the playoffs. I’d even take Warren in the second.

We won’t get those guys, and their skillset, if we don’t draft them.

Brady Norris Batherson
Greig Jimmy Soko/Jarvy
Gauthier Opstachuk Boucher

Is getting nice any heavy
Where is Pinto? You include Boucher over him hahaha

I don't think there is a stereotypical Senators pick or preference.

Another bullet in the "fire Dorion" rationale when the day comes.

The Sens will like Samuel Savoie in the later rounds. He will be right up there with Joshua Davies, Liam Arnsby and Brady Stonehouse. The Sens could look to take all four this draft. They will all be hyper physical super pest types, which the Sens will love.

Rutger like Rutger Hauer.
Then there is Cutter Gauthier.
Solid first names. Cutter and Rutger.
Hi I"m Cutter.
Hi I"m Rutger.

To be fair, I think by most accounts Gauthier should be in that range, and the knowledge of where the Sens pick is kinda bumping him up the rankings a bit because he is such a Sens pick it hurts.

I think the issue isn't that the team doesn't have good prospects or hasn't had good years draft wise. Its that we've seen already a two year chunk where we missed on every pick (2013-2014) and how this came back to bite us years later. At the time people said have faith when the picks looked rough on the surface because of past success but it didn't work out.

The truth is if we looked at the last 10 years of 1st rounders we have:
Boucher
Stutzle (A)
Sanderson (A)
Greig (A)
Thomson (C)
Tkachuk (A)
Jacob Bernard-Docker (C)
Bowers (F)
Brown (F)
Chabot (A)
White (C)
Lazar (F)
Ceci (C)
Zibanejad (A)
Noesen (F)
Puempel (F)

It's great that we've had some good years but our record does have blemishes too and almost every time we've had a bad 1st round pick it has been picking someone 'toolsy' above highly talented offensive players. It is our blind spot. Only time it was a swing was Logan Brown and he was an injury machine.

The other thing - if you're gonna pick a big forceful power winger then pick one who actually stays healthy and is physically intimidating...

We have a good record outside of the 1st round generally. But I don't understand why the best scouted round (1st) we don't use some analytics etc... to help make sure we're not making mistakes or missing Gems.
