With the Leafs already having traded away their own picks from 2022 for 2nd (Giordano), 3rd (Dave Rittich), 4th (Nick Foligno), 5th (Ben Hutton) , and 6th (Riley Nash) round picks in this draft, and only made 3 picks from last year I say the odds are very good they won't be picking in the 1st with their own pick either.

So with only 3 picks again including the manufactured one from dealing Dermott, it seems more likely then not we won't be picking at #25 either today.

However I expect the Leafs to more likely trade back and pick up and extra pick in the 2nd/3rd rounds.
Cheese and rice. What a sad list of players we traded those picks for with the exception of Gio.

No idea about the prospects but looking forward to watching tonight.

What's the odds on the Leafs actually picking 25th?
I have a feeling the group has a list of "fallers" that if one is still available they use the pick, but if their preferred guy(s) doesn't get to them they trade down and re-coup a 2nd

Would people be upset if Dubas traded the 25th pick to Arizona for the 32nd and 34th pick?

With the exception of a few high picks and the occasional 4th rounder who everyone missed on the NHL draft is not a huge influence on next year. What % of players reach the NHL, what % will make it yr 1, and how many actually have an impact.
Next yr is a potential cup year for the Leafs. I do not care about 2025 season without a cup now. We do not even have any idea that Sandin will make it and we have waited 4 yrs.
Trade the pick, do what you can to load up NOW.
McGroarty sounds like a guy who could move quick. Physical maturity, play style.
Imagining a Knies-like progression, understanding the rarity of it, could both be end of year options?

Assuming there are no projected consensus top 15 fallers...
1. Mateychuk
2. Bischel
3. McGroarty
4. Pickering
5. Ohgren

If they're all gone I'd trade down and try to get both Goyette and Rinzel

I would but depending whats left on the board. I don't think the difference between 25 and 32 will be that different and adding another shot at the board with the 34th pick would be interesting.

Call me crazy, but I really hope we can see a Leaf Blockbuster today.

I feel like NJ at pick 2 would be open to moving that selection, and I feel like having either Slavkovsky or wright on ELC could really benefit this club.

To Tor:
2nd Overall + Alexander Holtz/Miles Wood

to NJ:
William Nylander

I honestly don't know if the value lines up, but I feel like this is a deal that could benefit us sooner than what it appears on paper. Yes we give up a very good player in Nylander. A proven producer at the NHL level, but we gain 3 years of ELC in Slakovsky/Wright and it would give us more cap space in UFA to make a real splash move. I think Wright and Slavkovsky could be injected into our lineup right away TBH, and I think NJ is likely looking to take that next step. Certainly their ownership you would have to believe is tired of not making the playoffs.

I thought Isaac Howard weeks ago, so no need to change now. Though perhaps they can trade back, get an extra pick and still nab their guy.

His ranking is all over the place.

I would do this trade without blinking.

I don't think people understand that this draft is deep into the second round and just want certain players that have some name to them.

We will be talking about guys like Noah Warren, Adam Sykora, Lane Hutson.

Book it

I double back to this idea too, even though there’s no reports. Willy for #2+ would be a big deal.
Would definitely shake things up.

I’d probably do it too, but I don’t see the same value for ‘Zona .

Never know, the Niemela/Hirvonen trade down did happen.

Guys I would realistically like to target at 25 :

Matechyuk
Ostlund
Ohgren
Trikozov
Firkus
Hutson
Casey

It's realistic to expect at least several of the names above will still be around at 25

There's no doubt a lot of boom/bust potential above, but I'd much rather take a swing than Draft somebody safe in the top sixty.

Admittedly I’m not as versed in this year’s crop. But if, for example, Ohgren reminds the more informed of good NHL players, then I’m not sure a repeat of Konency for Dermott makes sense.

Are there eight players from 25 to 32 of equivalent value?

I think the Leafs trade back to recoup some draft picks.

I really don't think they will. They have a chance to grab an impact player at 25. I don't think they are going to risk moving back and out of the first round completely. I think they may move future picks to get picks in this draft, but I think they are standing pat at #25. Unless they move back and stay in the first round that's the only way I see them moving back.

Yes. Just because Dubas went for Dermott doesn't mean there weren't other good players HFboards had touted for 2015 (i.e. Aho, Kylington).

This draft is deep and that is also why it's super hard to predict what the draft will look like from 15-45 lets say.

It may not have as many or any franchise level players - but it does have a lot of good talent that can hit the NHL

My tiers if it helps, are:

1
2-4
5-11
12-22
23-41

I just think this is the type of shakeup we need. Get a young stud to inject into the lineup right away. Truthfully I would be stoked with Wright or Slakovsky. even doing something like:

To Tor:
2nd overall

To NJ:
Mrazek
Nylander

On paper we lose the deal, but lets say we use the net ~10AAV to sign Filip Forsberg at X AAV. Seems like a no brainer to me. Obviously this plan carries a ton of risk because we are not guaranteed to sign a player like Filip. But it also gives us a ton of flexibility to acquire a larger contract.

not to mention I think both Wright and Slavkovsky are studs.

Willy is a great player, but something has to give with this core group unfortunately. That 2nd line should have been a difference maker for us all year and it wasn't. JT is immovable, Willy unfortunately is the only other option

I lean towards Cooley, but yeah, whatever the cap is used for plus a great prospect with x number of quality ELC years for two years of Willy sounds pretty good.
Said being a full on Willy supporter.

Nope. I don’t mind it at all.

Except Arizona also has the 27th pick IIRC… so I don’t see a scenario where they would deal 32 + 34 first. It’s more likely they move up from 27 with a mid round pick
