Can’t trade the pick, don’t even know what kind of return would be acceptable

If Arizona is really high on one player who's available at 2, the Devils could swap picks with them and pick up one of Arizona's other first rounders (probably in the 25-30 range). You use that pick plus Zacha or Smith to trade for Fiala.

Otherwise, you could trade 2 overall for Matthew Tkachuk with an extension agreed to.

Worst case scenario. Fitz is gonna f*** the pick up. Slaf over Cooley is gonna be so dumb
Watching and assessing prospects is kind of what I do, and this is a completely erroneous take.

Cooley is faster and plays center. The puck-handling is about even, as is the shooting. Slafkovsky is a better passer, and exponentially better in his interior game and his play down low. Slafkovsky is also a better complimentary player for Hughes and Bratt, or for Hischier and Bratt -- however the Devils chose to break it up. Cooley's skill set is redundant to Hughes but not as high-end, while his overall game is redundant to Hischier but not as good.

Cooley has no chance to be the Devils #2 overall pick, which is the correct decision. Slafkovsky has a very, very strong chance to be that guy. Also, we can't rule out Jiricek, or even Nemec.

Props to you still rocking the GameCube!

My buddy gave that to me years ago, I missed that generation of consoles. I only have a couple games for it, but I actively found a copy of NHL Hitz with Stevens on the cover.

Is that a SuperNintendo?

Yup, original SNES still runs although haven't turned it on in a few years.

Maybe if Hughes ends up being a cover guy, I'll be tempted to start playing the games again. Although I never did open my copy of NHL14 with Marty on the cover.

I can’t see Arizona moving up to 2. They’re going to want Cooley and they have to know we’re not picking him.

I’m also very much team Jiricek but it’ll be Slaf unless Jiricek’s just far and away better at the WC
Maybe the Flyers will want Cooley too. I guess that could open up a trade market?

I agree with your preference though. Rather have Jiricek/Nemec (depending on the team board).

At the end of the day, this team still needs everything. So no matter who they pick will have grounding in the "right" logic.

We’ll pick Slaf and I don’t want him. At 5 we’d end up with either Nemec or Jiricek who I’d much prefer
Jiricek won't be there at 5, in my opinion. Nemec would be a possibility. It's also very possible the Devils take Jiricek at 2, in my opinion. He's exactly what Fitzgerald likes at the Devils' organizational position of greatest need and we cannot discount this.

What leads you to project Slafkovsky as the better prospect? I know that @StevenToddIves has been torn between them.
His skillset is just so rare. He’s huge but he’s also really smart, uses his body well and has really nice hands. Such a great combination. And there isn’t really anything about his game that concerns. If anything he could get a little faster but I’m not concerned for the type of player he is and it’s not like he’s slow. He hadn’t shown much of a shot but then showed that off much more at the Olympics and I think that will naturally improve more with his size as he learns to use his weight. But I think he could be really special with his combination of Skill, IQ, and size.

Jiricek is a big defensmen with quick feet, and a heavy shot. He gets around well for a defensemen of his size but some parts of his skating are sloppy and could use some work. I’m also a big believer that poise and IQ are two of the most important things for defensemen to have and while he’s not dumb, when I watch him he often seems like he’s in a rush to do something and it leads to poor decisions at time. The best defensemen are really good at slowing things down. He isn’t good at this. I’ve broken all of this down more before.

Jiricek's stll outside the top 5 on Bob's list. I think he and Nemec end up 4/5 on the final list with the 3 F staying as the top 3. I could see them go Jiricek if he has a banger WC but I also think they see Slaf as exactly what we need and will go him instead.

Thanks for sharing that. Until NJ won the second pick it’s hard paying attention to the specific prospects for me. Now I can start to think about who makes sense.

From a couple of days ago. Translated, its scouts supposedly throwing shade on Shane Wright. Make of it what you will.

Slafkovsky is absolutely not a passenger. Cooley has no chance to be the Devils pick at #2. It's Slafkovsky vs. Jiricek, with the dark horse being Nemec.
Hubs deffinitly pick Slafkovsky. The winger is they prime need to complete line with Suzuki-Caufield , Slavkovsky is decided if they hold 1OA

Jiricek devils!!!!!!😄🙏
