So who are we losing to waivers and who makes it to the Marlies?

Guadette? Benn? Mete? Are they only ones at risk of us losing a depth player?

I assume ZAR and NAK are sticking on the 4th line. Do we lose

ZAR is still on PTO not sure if they'll sign him yet.

As for waivers here are the candidates:

Forwards - Dennis Malgin, Adam Gaudette, Wayne Simmonds, Kyle Clifford, Joey Anderson,

Defence - Mac Hollowell, Jordie Benn, Victor Mete, Carl Dahlstrom

Realistically, I think Dennis Malgin is the most likely to be claimed up front. But I could see Gaudette, or Anderson getting looks.

On defence, only Mete could get claimed.

If Malgin finishes the pre-season the way he’s currently playing, not sure how you don’t reward that and start the regular season with him in the lineup.

Engvall - Jarnkrok - Malgin

I think that would be a very good two-way third line.

Aston-Reese - Kampf - Aube-Kubel

As your fourth line.

I expect that we see this for Game 1

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Nylander - Kerfoot - Jarnkrok
Robertson - Holmberg - Malgin
ZAR (750k)- Kampf - NAK

Muzzin - Rielly
Sandin - Brodie
Giordano - Holl
Mete

Murray
Samsonov

Tavares - IR
Liljegren, Engvall - LTIR

cap compliant

When (if) Healthy…

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Nylander - Tavares - Jarnkrok
Engvall - Kerfoot - Malgin
ZAR - Kampf - NAK

Muzzin - Rielly
Sandin - Brodie
Giordano - Liljegren
Mete

Murray
Samsonov

Holl traded

cap compliant

Malgin is a nice bandaid player to have around until JT is back. But off the top of my head wed be sitting one of Kerfoot or Robertson for a bottom 6 Malgin when healthy. That's a no for me after Robertson broke my tie on Friday.

Might be recency bias as well but I'm really enjoying Steeves or McMann over Malgin if were diving into bottom 6 spots. Malgin has played well but Tyler Ennis looked better when we went that route for the bottom 6. He's not a must make-the-team for me.

I get it but we are that tight to the cap that if 1) everyone is healthy and 2) there are no trades other than Holl then keeping Robertson up means waiving Malgin AND Mete and running a 20 man roster.

Not saying they won’t do it… but

Robertson makes about 30k too much.

I agree with lines 1 & 4 for game 1. They seem highly likely. I’d be surprised at this those specific 2 & 3 combos though. Your lines put all the veteran NHLers in Nylander, Kerfoot, Jarnkrok on one line leaving extremely little experience on the third. I don’t see any scenario where Keefe lines up Robertson and Holmberg on the same line unless injuries force his hand. I think he breaks up the 4th before he goes that route

To start the season, if everyone else remains healthy, I’d like to see this lineup

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - Kerfoot - Nylander
Engvall - Jarnkrok - Malgin
Aston-Reese - Kampf - Aube-Kubel

Rielly - Brodie
Giordano - Sandin
Muzzin - Holl

Murray - Samsonov

Wanting is one thing. But what should be the lines, looking at the past an coaching style.

my best guess based on everything we've seen in the past and in training camp:

Bunting --- Matthews --- Marner
Robertson --- Tavares --- Nylander
Engvall --- Kerfoot --- Jarnkrok
ZAR --- Kampf --- NAK

Muzzin --- Brodie
Rielly --- Sandin
Giordano --- Liljegren

and right now I'd say the frontrunners to fill in for the injured Tavares are Malgin and Holmberg, though taking Malgin would mean shifting Jarnkrok over to center which they haven't tried yet in camp I don't think, so maybe that gives Holmberg the edge.

I don't think Robertson is ready yet. He seems like he could really benefit from more time in AHL.

I also would get nervous seeing Rielly and Sandin as partners.

Maby if they are to scared to try Rob.

Thinking I don't want ZAR signed anymore, would rather have a longer look at Robertson, roll 3 scoring lines, and a 4th line that is annoying to play against, will shut you down, and can chip in offensively too.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - Tavares - Jarnkrok
Nylander - Kerfoot - Malgin
Engvall - Kampf - NAK

Really not sure how any team can match up against that... really the only issue would be finding time for everyone.

Top 3 1st line (maybe the best)
Top 10 2nd line (haven't looked into it enough, could be top 5)
The best 3rd line?
The best 4th line?

Match 2nd/4th lines against the tough competition and have Willy/Matthews/Marner feast on the easier lines at home.

Away games, just let the other coach figure it out, it's not easy.

I like your lines but that 2nd line would be a bottom 10 second line for sure. Jarnkrok and Robertson are not top 6 players. Look at our divison- Boston for example has Hall - Krejci - Pastrnak. Ottawa has Debrinkat - Stutzle - Giroux. Detroit has Perron - Copp - Vrana. Florida: Tkachuk - Bennett - Reinhart. Tampa : Stamkos - Cirelli - Hagel. All superior lines

And Tavares is better than every single one except for maybe Pastrnak and Stamkos.

Maybe top 10 is overrating, but Tavares works well with lesser players, guys who work hard and get the puck out. I can see that line working well.

I don't think that second line is bottom 10, not even close.

Not sure those will be those team's second lines anyway, I guess it depends if they spread out their talent as we do in this siutation.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Kerfoot line is better than the Tavares one, especially if you swap Jarnkrok and Maglin.

If Robertson makes the team, the leafs cannot cannot carry a 21-man roster (Irregardless of what Z.A.R signs for).

Note: When everyone is healthy

What about trying Nylander down the middle
Bunting Matthews Marner
Jarnkrok Nylander Malgin
Robertson Tavares Kerfoot
Engvall Kampf NAK

3 scoring lines and a solid defensive shutdown 4th line

Steeves*

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Geo
Sandin Holl
Mete*(Liljegren)

Trade Engval. I actually like him more than most people around here but his money could be used to keep 2 of the bubble guys.
