I can't speak for anyone else but life puts a lot of perspective on things. I'm as die hard a Leaf fan as it gets, being glued for parts of six decades. Yet life eventually leads you to realize just how irrelevant grown men chasing pucks is.....just a distraction really. As a poster pointed out, the alternative to being positive is what? For all hockey matters (which is not at all), why waste time being pessimistic (and/or spreading such) on the things designed to be the distractions? It's almost like choosing to be in a negative relationship. You have a choice.

Who's being "pessimistic"? Not me. I'm being REALISTIC. Just because I can see that we've gotten worse in goal and still have terrible depth after our top 2 lines, that doesn't mean I'm being pessimistic, Guy. It means I can see the forest and the trees. It might also mean that many of YOU are drinking the blue kool-aid, once again, and being blindly optimistic. This team can never do any wrong with some of you. LOL. I'm not eating that bullshit burrito this time around.

I'm still a Leaf fan and I'll cheer them on. But we ain't winning squat as we are. We're basically Edmonton. We gotta get better than that to win anything. :)

I don't think it's worth it to keep Kerfoot if we're just going to put him on the 4th line. I think Kerfoot fits a more offensively-oriented line with Robertson/Nylander more than Kampf, and I think Kampf fits a more defensively-oriented line with ZAR/NAK more than Kerfoot.

It would give each line an identity too. Top line is great at everything and arguably the best line in hockey. 2nd line more of a grinding puck possession style. 3rd line speed and offense. 4th line shutdown defense.
I think the shutdown defensive role should likely be the third line, 4th line wouldn’t get enough minutes, and usually get matched against other 4th lines a lot.

I won't ever get on board with splitting up Bunting-Matthews-Marner.. we pay good money for other guys who should be able to carry the rest of the offense. That top line is what separates us from other teams offensively.

Every goal except 4 from Dec 27th, Nylander is buzzing around the crease.

The 4 where he didn't go near the crease, they were beauty snipes.

Tavares by nature at his best with a real off season is elite at reading where to stand and how to track the puck

Him and JT are eating this year. Don't worry about your Nylander to 3rd line visions. We will get snipes, tips, crease swarms, slip between the D stealth finish, you want it you name it etc.

*Yes this is 19/20 because our second line that year from late December disproves JT-Nylander doesn't work.

So why do fans (not saying you) get angry or annoyed at fans of other teams for being positive? If everyone sports fan's role is just blind positivity, why would we put down other teams and their fans?

Also, if you're a fan of the sport, not just a fan of a team, do you have to be positive about every team associated with that sport?

Metrics that measure skater defensive play and impact are "actual defensive metrics". Goals against is a metric that combines defensive play and goaltending performance.
The 'x' in xgf% and others isn't 'expected', but an actual fact? Good to know.

doesn't matter - we will always be wrong.

sometimes it's a 6 man unit on the ice, sometimes it's a 3 man unit, sometimes you blame the goalie, sometimes sometimes
For actual goals, the fans blame the goalie, the goalie blames the defence, the defence blame the forwards, and the forward blame the ref.

For expected goals, posters blame whoever they feel like.

You seem to be mistaken by the name. Expected metrics are real, valuable metrics, and are much better than goals against for evaluating skater defensive play.

actually, if you think our depth is terrible, you're absolutely being pessimistic, as that doesn't jive with the facts.

Are they, or are they expectations based on previous actual shots and chances?

They measure actual shot attempts against, and the quality of those shot attempts based on how often those types of chances have actually turned into goals before.

Have a feeling they're going to put a place holder up with Tavares and Nylander until Robertson is ready

My 'name' mistake was not noticing it was you.
No, your "mistakes" were thinking goals against were skater defensive metrics (when they're actually a combination of skater defense and goaltending performance), and arbitrarily dismissing actual valuable skater defensive metrics for no reason, though I suspect you know what you were doing was wrong and just wanted to try and make Tavares look worse again.

Expected goals for or against (xGF or xGA): This stat is based on shot attempts that have been weighted for shot quality by factoring in things such as shot type, shot location, shot angle, and whether a shot was a rebound or rush shot. This does not tell if a shot actually resulted in a goal but rather the probability of scoring a goal based on the factors listed above. Expected goals models have been even better at predicting future performance than shot attempts alone.

No they aren't real goals.

Based on Keefe’s comments about Gaudette maybe being the next Bunting surprise player it looks like they will take a look at Gaudette with Tavares and Willie. Very curious to see how that mix works. I was underwhelmed with the Gaudette signing but they must see something I haven’t seen. I do think the JT-Willie combo will be reverted to more often than not and it will be a rotating tryout to see who can fit that 2nd line left wing spot btwn Robertson/Gaudette/Kerfoot/Malgin with it being Kerfoot’s spot to lose.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
??????? - Tavares - Nylander
Kerfoot - Kampf - Jarnkrok
Engvall - Douglas - Anderson/Simmonds/NAK

???? Goes to whoever earns the spot between Robertson, Holmberg, Gaudette and Steeves. It can be Kerfoot too I guess to push one down to the 3rd line. Knies could take that spot aswell. I think if none are able to, then we may have to trade for someone to fill that.

Gaudette - Tavares - Marner doesn't make sense if your trying to keep Matthews happy imo. I get you wanna get Tavares back to that 47 goal season he had with Marner and Hyman as his line mates, but our 1st line was great last year, why change it.

Yes "realistic " is exactly what you sound like. Have a breath of fresh air. Enjoy the things that matter while you still can.
