2022 Draft Discussion (after the trade)

  • Work is still on-going to rebuild the site styling and features. Please report any issues you may experience so we can look into it. Click Here for Updates
You see what happens when you draft for an immediate need?

It's funny seeing Lombardi's future vision of a top 4 of Doughty, Johnson, Hickey and Teubert. Plans certainly changed, didn't they?

So what you'er saying is a top six of Chromiak-Thomas-Kaliyev / Lee-Pinelli-Madden is nigh!

Just looking at 2010 onwards there is some great value there. Even Klefbom looked good till he got injured.
Later on guys like Regegr, Strakam and, my favorite name growing up, Beukaboom give hope.

I have mixed feelings about Rutger McGroarty. Though maybe I need to see more of him. In my brief viewings, I actually think I liked Tyler Boucher more than McGroarty, and Boucher was considered a major reach at 10th overall last year.

He's not a technically strong skater, or fast. He engages physically, but not a bruiser. For a power forward... I actually don't think he protects the puck that well. He has "okay" hands, but he hangs onto the puck for not nearly as much time as someone who I envision as a power forward who drives to the net with the puck.

Maybe it was just a bad game; so, like I said, I need to see more. But based on what I saw, I would be hesitant to spend even a 2nd on him.

After watching Vilardi and Kaliyev I'm pretty much done with forward prospects that have skating issues.

We don’t want any more prospects that can’t skate. And no more without offensive upside. And no more small defensemen. Basically a 6’3” LD with amazing skating and high end skill! Hope we only ever get the #1 pick with all the demands fans have.

Can't pick flawed players at 19th overall.

Toffoli fit that bill, I thought he was a worse skater than Kaliyev.

I'm not against taking guys with skating issues, but outside the first round, please.

I think it's a stretch calling McGroarty a 'project' because he's not a speedster. He's got everything else you need. The Kings and prospects aren't slow by any means either, not sure why everyone thinks we're still a team of Dwight Kings.

I think he's good at protecting the puck, agree that he's not stereotypically power forward in that regard, but that he just doesn't hold it that much because it's off his stick quickly...I don't see it as a weakness at all, he's making quick smart plays with pace which is exactly how a guy that's a little slower 'plays fast.'

I'm not married to him as a prospect or our pick by any means but jesus christ you can see just in the last 10 posts how quickly shallow criticism can become a thoughtless meme.

I do think we're in a pretty fortunate spot between tiers, though, where someone could drop. I do also really like Marco Kasper, if we're not going for home run swings (though personally again I want quality over quantity, even at the risk of busting), or Liam Ohgren.

I know skating is important but it’s not like the team was a bunch of lumbering pylons out there. But I swear I remember reading on here how fast other fans thought the team was.

2008 was a really great year to draft defenceman.
I feel like this year is going to have a similar result. Maybe not a lot of top end ones, but several very good 3-5 guys that end up with solid careers. I know we've got a bunch of 'em already, but I sure wouldn't mind getting a couple more.

Yes, it matters. They made a mistake, because they drafted smaller one. Kings had a chance to take Tyler Myers 6'8" / 229 lbs... .

2008 was a really great year to draft defenceman.

Teubert had size, physically, and toughness – all traits DL was targeting in that pick.

As we have heard from Yanetti several times unless (2) players are equal in their rankings across the board, BPA all day every day. Draft for need and The Hockey Gods will bite you in the ass down the road.

Do not draft a forward ever again

I was about to bring up Jiri Kulich...
Jiri Kulich, who was named the most valuable player at the 2022 IIHF World Under-18 Championship, interviewed with all 32 NHL teams this week.

"The teams want to know how I am as a player, as a person," Kulich said. "I think I'm a shooter and a fast skater. But I think I have a good shot. I like to watch David Pastrnak (Boston Bruins) and I'll try to do some of his highlights, but I think I have the same style of play as Jakub Vrana (Detroit Red Wings)."

Kulich (6-0 172) a center with Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic, led all skaters with nine goals at the U-18 Worlds, the most by a Czech player in a single U-18 tournament.

"I hope I will be picked in the first round," Kulich said. "I want to be the leader. I'm a team player. I know how to score some goals because I've always been the shooter. I just need to work on my play in the defensive zone."

Kulich, No. 13 in Central Scouting's final ranking of International skaters, said one more season in the Czech Republic might be good for his development.

"I think it's better for me is play with the senior team in Karlovy, but I don't have problem to play in the Canadian Hockey League or the American Hockey League."

Lombardi said specifically he drafted Teubert, because the team was missing toughness. Myers did not have that.

...and if I recall he and the Buffalo GM at the time had a deal in place where they'd swap picks if they had the same name on a piece of paper. The Kings would have gotten a 3rd. They didn't so the trade never happened but Myers was never on their list.

The trade did happen. Both Lombardi and then-Buffalo GM each wrote who they wanted on the list. Buffalo wrote Myers, and Lombardi wrote Teubert.

They traded the 12th overall for 13th + 2009 3rd round pick.

I’d wondered if Lombardi had gone off the board. Looking it up, Teubert WAS ranked around there by scouts pre-draft. He was just a huge bust, which happens, and it doubly stings with all the defensemen that year who were jackpots.
