Prospect Info: 2022 Draft: 3OA - Logan Cooley, C

Wasn't that long ago everyone was expert reporting on how displeased McDavid was being drafted by the Oilers. Yet he signed the max deal he could as soon as it was available and has never once spoke poorly about the City? People try too hard to read something into everything.
He may have grown loyal to the organization that drafted him if he was indeed disappointed to be drafted there. Signing max term doesn't disprove that he was a disappointed 17 y.o. at the draft lottery. I don't know how he was feeling that day but those tears didn't look like tears of happiness.

I don't recall any tears. I just remember a quiet young kid being scrutinized by everyone. And incorrectly. Sounds kinda familiar.

I just went back to see, and you're right. No tears. The event has been dramatized in my memory over the years.

Haha I actually looked at it as well!!! But it does kinda point to what I was saying, we over analyzed it to death when it was just simply a kid getting over exposed.

The part where he goes, "Arizona, I'm happy" and gets a big smile and sits up says otherwise. I think he wanted to go 1, but didn't want to go 2. Why I have no idea, but he didn't seem thrilled going into the NJ pick, and looked relieved when they didn't select him. I doubt we were his first choice, but I'd be surprised based on his reaction that we would be a spot he wouldn't care for.
The other guess is he is looking specifically at the pecking order for teams. NJ has a #1 C. Montreal, Arizona, and Seattle do not.

Wondering if there was an expectation to make the jump and be immediately slotted on the top line. Montreal decided to make the trades to move for Dach as well.

Methinks a part of what Wright was thinking was where he would fit in getting playing time early.

As for Cooley - we took a good player. I think there were other ways to potentially build out since we are likely to be a bottom 5 team next year as well. The centers in the top 5 are going to be better than Cooley, IMO. If we took the BPA in Cooley, then so be it. I liked the idea of Jiricek or even Nemec (obv not possible once NJ took him) to give us a RHD side with Jiricek/Soderstrom as the top 2 for the next 7 or 8 years. Get our C in 2023 and that player may be able to step right in and play in 2023. Risky, but I am worried Lamoreaux never fills out quite enough and becomes nothing more than a bottom pairing at best.

Cooley legitimately plays the quickest most skilled game of any C available. This is a clear sign that we want to eventually be playing a fast up tempo style. This was a statement pick by BA on what our future makeup of the top of our lineup is going to look like. Did I have him at #1? No. But I had him at #2. The hindsight versus Wright is going to be something to talk about for the next half decade. That's fine. This is where we can judge this scouting staff and BA's philosophy on how to build a team. This is something I actually really enjoy discussing.

I’d probably take Slafkovsky 1st but I may have talked myself into Cooley at 2nd.
I had Slaf 3rd but I had a positional bias for C at our pick. I don't regret that at all.
