Prospect Info: 2022 Draft: 3OA - Logan Cooley, C

I hadn't seen it yet, just watched it on YouTube. Wright says "Arizona. Happy" before we made our pick and repeats it because his family was having a hard time hearing him. That definitely makes me question what I'd originally thought - that the vibe was that he didn't want to be here. Hmm!?

I just noticed Nathan MacKinnon is only 6'0..... What current NHLers does Cooley project to be? Oddly I don't remember hearing pre-draft comparisons for Cooley....

Anyone got a time stamp? I’m gonna watch the whole thing tonight. But the Wright part can’t wait! Haha.
Roughly 30 minutes in...just before the Wright soundbite they go to Slafkovsky who says "they drafted Logan Cooley?" as he's walking from some of his post draft interviews.

I still get the vibe that Wright cared more about draft position in that clip. His dad even gives a very "meh" shrug after he asks Shane "Arizona?".

Really hope this was the right pick because my initial thoughts that he may have been bummed about coming here and playing in a college arena probably have no basis now.

Wow. Wright really wanted to be picked at three by Arizona. That is so clear in that video. I’m surprised how clear it was. Wow.

Slafkovsky really came off as a tremendous kid. The 2nd thing he said to Hughes at the draft table was how excited he was for Nemec. Then as he’s walking from press to press he gets all pumped for Cooley going 3rd. Right after the classic 1-2-3 finger pose with the top picks, he immediately turns to Cooley and expresses concern for Wright and hopes he goes 4th. Then his reaction to Mesar going to MTL was just so over the top. He really cares.

This is a kid who spent his draft day thinking about the other kids and wanting to take care of them. That’s a captain.

Between this video and the 32 Thoughts interview, I’m convinced that if he’s got the skills to match the personality, he can be a legit star in this league.

This is what makes hockey the greatest sport in the world. These kids have given up so much to play the hardest sport in the world and they care for each other. This is their dream. Happy for all the kids that get drafted in any round. Now the real work begins.

That's the impression I got. Some guys are all about the status and the jockeying. Wright could say NJ wanted defense and Montreal wanted a big winger, but to pick a different center over him hurt the ego a bit. I reflexively don't like his mannerisms and get a bad vibe with all I've seen, but these are teenagers at the end of the day. He can grow out of it, use it to power his entire career, or let it turn him into a bust. Only time will tell.

Wright will be just fine. Emotions run high, and everything happens so fast at the draft. You can just tell all the kids were on pins and needles. Hearts pumping a hundred miles an hour. Parents french kissing.:) Good time had by all.

I never thought of it that way. He may have wanted to be top three rather than be a Yote.

I could see him potentially being a problem if we drafted him. We made the right choice (by not being the Wright choice). Going thru his brain was " they think I'm only the 4th best player".

I watched it the other day. It was quite good. Especially hearing wright commenting.

26:55 is where the clip starts.

man after the 26 mark it seemed like the rest of the video really featured the Coyotes... BA is on there alot as well as some others

could be but he seemed happy that it was Arizona,., maybe he had good meetings with Arizona and was pleased etc..? And then when it wasn't us he was like "that hurts " ?

It's actually tough to watch. He seemed very happy when he thought he would go to us, and crushed when he didn't. He looked happier than Cooley that he'd wind up in AZ. His words echoed his body language.

I wanted him all season but let media get into my head by the end of the year. I felt a small bit of his pain when we didn't select him, like I had abandoned my gut and betrayed the player. Seems like a real good kid, Seattle should be incredibly happy with him.

Wright was convinced he was a top 3 pick. Cooley wanted to go to us. Thats what their body language told me as I rewatched the draft and the espn inside the draft show
The part where he goes, "Arizona, I'm happy" and gets a big smile and sits up says otherwise. I think he wanted to go 1, but didn't want to go 2. Why I have no idea, but he didn't seem thrilled going into the NJ pick, and looked relieved when they didn't select him. I doubt we were his first choice, but I'd be surprised based on his reaction that we would be a spot he wouldn't care for.

I think he thought he was goingvto montreal. Didnt want to go to NJ. Maybe figured out or knew they werent taking him. Maybe he liked AZ more than NJ. I am glad he is in Seattle

Agreed. I think Wright seemed genuinely happy at the thought of coming here. I imagine it had crossed his mind with all the chatter of Montreal passing on him and he probably felt he had a good meeting with Arizona. I imagine in that moment with the pressure of being first having passed, he probably relaxed just a little and thought Arizona might just be a better place for him. I agree that he never thought he would get passed on by us and it was probably the lowest moment in his life. Worse that it happens in front of a millions staring right at him. He does seem like a kid that is still maturing . Like everyone told him to be a champion you have to be a Michael Jordan level a hole so that's the type of persona he is trying to project, but it isn't actually him. But instead he is just a young kid still trying to get comfortable in his own skin.

Cooley was great to watch. Feel like he has been imagining himself as a Coyote for months now and has been internally hyped to be here even though he knew he shouldn't be that set on one team. He was definitely nervous with Wright dropping. I'm excited that he is so excited to be here.

Agree with RT that Slafkovsky is a gem. The rare combination of quiet confidence with the authentic empathy that makes everyone like you.

If you ain’t first, you’re last!

I feel like we need one of Keller or Crouse. We need a veteran top line to lead the kids. Keeping both LWs through this rebuild is excessive in the context of gutting the roster down to the minimum.

I like Crouse a lot and if he's traded, I want a 23 1st and I don't want top 10 protection on it.
