Prospect Info: 2022 Draft: 3OA - Logan Cooley, C

Seems like there are some rumors that Cooley may return to Minnesota.

I don't hate this.
1. Helps the tank more
2. He would be in a leadership role. Sure he doesn't have much to improve on offensively, but he can improve mentally and by taking a huge step as THE guy there.
3. NCAA still has a great weight/strength program. He will still be able to develop physically. If he does this he will be a much more complete player by the time he hits the NHL.

Not my favorite option, but not the end of the world if it happens.

I'm a fan of this and it has nothing to do with my Gopher fandom and everything to do with proper development. He's still 18 years old.

I wouldn't hate it...but anxious to see Cooley in action in the pros and he certainly doesn't need anymore seasoning at the college level.

He would benefit from the weight training aspect of College hockey, so that would be a benefit and since he's still only 18yrs old, it wouldn't be the worst thing.

No? How can you be so sure.
Because he’d have to stay there for several more years and he’s already to good for college hockey.

Slow starters and late bloomers are the risks. Project picks. Not top three selections.

🤞
I can't. But the franchise could have a new arena in the works and loads of talented prospects a year from now. He also has family here.
He's far too good to stay in MN beyond his sophomore year.
I think he’s too good to stay beyond his freshman year. If that’s what he wants, it’s okay with me.

The only thing that’ll make this not super disappointing is if we win a lottery this draft and get to watch bedard or fantilli. If no Cooley, there’s not all that much to be excited about next season and it’ll be another season of spinning the wheels trying and failing to get a top pick

The Gophs have some talent coming in like Oliver Moore, Max Rud, Sam Rinzel and Beckett Hendrickson, to name a few. It's a great program for Cooley to finish his development in, especially if we draft Moore with the Ottawa pick.

Our 1st pick could make team even if 6OA.

It would be very fun to see Moore and Cooley together if we took Moore with the Ottawa pick.

Let’s take Bedard with the 1st overall and Moore with the 12th overall. ;)

I’m not sure I’d put anyone outside of the top 2 in the NHL next season.

I wouldn't even put Fantilli in the NHL.

Sure, he could stay afloat, but I really don't think it would be best for his development.

Give him all the pre-season minutes, then give him a decent role for 9 games, then send him to Tuscon til WJC. Tell him that's the plan. Tell him there's no amount of hat tricks that can keep him him up with the big club.

If he shreds the AHL then you can call him up.

Can't Cooley be in the AHL? Wouldn't that be better than NCAA. He would have everything that he wants at his finger tips and we can call him up if we want.

Why though? He put up 1.80ppg and won the Hobey and made the frozen four. And got WJC gold. I think Eichel did like 1.75ppg, won the Hobey and made the frozen four. Didn’t medal in the WJC, though. Not that it matters.

Didn’t he end up with 25-30-55 as a rookie on an awful Buffalo team? I think Fantilli is comparable. Both are October birthdays and 6’2, so fairly mature for their class.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cooley hit 50 as a rookie Coyote with the right linemates and 82 games. He gets off to slow starts, but once he heats up, look out.

My concern is rarely a 19 year old body is physically ready for the NHL grind battling opponents in a league with an average age of 27.

Not referring to how muscular or even physical stature.. .but body composition...

I seem to remember McDavid getting his collarbone fractured his rookie season. Perhaps Chychrun while physically ready was still a kid his rookie year. I don't remember if he had injuries his rookie year, but potentially adverse effects of a very young adult facing grown men?

Some of it's paranoia I'm sure...and no I'm not suggesting McDavid should have spent anytime with Bakersfield LOL. Eichel certainly feeds the paranoia as well with his injury problems.

Ironically perhaps less of a concern with shorter players who have a stocky build like a stump...must be stump day for me (ahh reminds of the time I saw Neil Young at the Fabulous Fox theater in St. Louis when he had a stump on stage and I hollered out "where'd you get the stump" and he answered my question...something about a gift from a tribe or something....followed up by saying "It's fashionable these days to make stuff up as facts")

Is the AHL less of an injury concern?

Why not? is the question I'd be asking. So many prospects get rushed. You're right that Eichel is an excellent comparable and in his case, he didn't suffer a set back. Lafreniere is a less ideal comparable but still relevant for sure.

Because it’s bad to put up 2.5-3pts per game against amateurs when you’re trying to become an elite level professional. Better to put up 0.45-0.65pts per game in the show, I think. No matter how long he hides in college there’s going to be a transition and growth period in the NHL. Kicking the can down the road doesn’t help, IMO.

Worth noting Minnesota is switching over to hybrid ice this season like most other ncaa programs have. Doing away with their Olympic ice.

Cooley can sign for 2023-24 now if he wants to.

Today is the last day he can sign for 2022-23 as it’s the Coyotes final game of the season.
Well, you’ve just dimmed my hopes somewhat. Why wouldn’t he have just signed like all his buddies, but instead do it for 23/24? I get not signing for this season, but why delay unnecessarily? I’m guessing he’s really considering going back.
