2022 Draft - 2nd Pick: Samuel Jonsson (G)

I do like the logo of his Swedish team:

Not ranked anywhere, can't find a single reference to him apart from his Eliteprospects page.

Can't discredit the pick because I've never heard of him, but I feel like we could have waited for the 6th/7th round.

Don't mind this kind of moonshot. Someone in the org had to have put eyes on him as he's otherwise a total unknown, and those are the kinds of players you want to find this late. Having said that, really wanted Bookman.

9-20, 3.25 gaa, whopping .883 save % Woof, oh well a least they took a goalie.

Have zero book on this kid…

Big Swedish goalie… it’s round 5. Idk. I’ve liked our late round picking the last few years. This will be a “wait 5 years” pick

As far as I can tell this is him in the gold and white:

His team blew a 2-0 lead to lose in OT. I rescind all my previous compliments about this selection. :sarcasm:

That Byrnas team was only won 6 games, they were bad, I think Rogle is much better. Marco Kaspar is on that team.

Interesting. Do you think the fact that a stronger team in Rogle decided to acquire him despite poor stats is an indication that his stats were more a team issue than a goalie issue?

Good frame. No idea of the quality of his team or competition level of the leagues he's been in. Oil volume spin to win goaltender strategy still in effect. Hopefully this guy can develop into a prospect! Would have liked a late pick flyer on Reid Dyck.

Fair, the nice part here he can develop overseas without needing organizational space, with the pro guys they're developing.

I have no idea. My guess is the Oilers' Euro scouts got alot of looks at him and see something in the player, that other services missed or ignored.

I think him moving to a better team might give him more of chance to show his ability.

But who knows.

Just for context

When he played in Brynas IF J18 in 2021
- was 3-0-0 - 1.67 - 0.939%

moved up to Brynas IF J20 the same year on a developing team
- going 1-4-0 - 0.337 - 0.898%

in 2022, on the same developing team, played more games
- going 9-20-0 - 0.325 - 0.883%

Looks like he's on Rogle BK J20, anyone know if it's better team?

I hope this pick turns out, this is very important because if it doesn't.
They might have to do something different in scouting goalies. Because there is a long list
of drafted goalies that couldn't even get to the AHL.

Absolutely. I have zero information on the kid only a very good physical starting point. Wish the best as I do for all Oiler picks. He'll get a long, slow cook development path to grow with the competition level he will ultimately play at. Small quibble in a highly erratic draft year where so many have had disrupted development, there likely are some good positional players falling through the cracks. But again, I don't know the players and most def can't see into the future. haha.

Wright said that they lucked out on Jonsson still being available at their Pick.
Really curious how this pick develops.

Wright probably has some knowledge of which teams like certain guys but "lucked out on Jonsson" seems like a delusional comment. We will see how many of his obscure reaches (which seems to be a pattern) are in 5 years.
