2022 Draft - 2nd Pick: Samuel Jonsson (G)

I posted this in the Dev Camp thread but thought it would be appropriate here as we get our first look at our 5th rounder Jonsson. The kid is a monster in net. If he develops good lateral mobility and puck tracking, he could live up to the hype that the scouts have given him.

3:20 mark to get a good reference for his size.

Ok he's big

Lol, when the Oilers finally pick a goalie, they get one with stats like that.

Just look at it like they drafted him based on projections of his toolset. The stats don't matter because they drafted a projection of a 24 year old goalie and are waiting for him to develop.

The movement towards analytical analysis of stats has let some toolsy studs slip by teams in the NHL draft imo. Hockey is just way more athletic than baseball and tools still matter a lot.

Holloway had a rough season his draft year but he always looked like a stud. The Oilers drafted the projection. Same could be said of Ty Pitlick tho, who was really toolsy and never developed ;p

Hopefully between Skinner, Fanti and Jonsson one of them will be ready to be our starter by the time Jack Campbell’s contract is up.
Maybe Skinner is ready as soon as next year and Campbell becomes the next Kosko.

Uhhhhhhhhhhh........you just said his tool didn't develop

Goalies usually take a while to develop, and often the ones drafted early turn into busts
this guy may take an extra time to develop.

Most of you know, Iove my Swedes and usually go to Sweden quite a few times during the season and love what I see.

My only red flag on this guy is games played, Partly due to a couple of injuries and partly due to how the Swedes develop goalies. They use tandems a lot and not everyone is a fan of that. Goalies are like D-men--they need to play games and that is often the rub against Swedish goalie, they often do not play lots till they leave the Swedish system. Then we have his club team, Brynas IF, not the biggest fan of their development program but that is just me. They had a few good years but overall their development of players is at the lower end for me--again--this is just me

Love the Swedes as well., I have good vibes with this kid, agree, hopefully he starts playing a little more often now that he is drafted, he's 18, listed at 6'4" 200 lbs ., that's a massive young kid between the pipes, he could be our version of a bigger Tommy Salo :)

He will be playing in Rogle's system next season, which I'm led to believe is a much stronger prgm overall, including for goalie dev't, although I'm sure you have more knowledge in this particular area.

Small sample of course but I thought he was clearly the second best goalie behind Fanti last night. He looked huge but also very calm and quiet in the net. Made a few really nice saves.

He is looking like 3rd on the depth chart. That move looks strange to me. Rogle has put a lot of time into Arwidson, but I can see them loaning Mustafic out again. Neither of their numbers were that good. Rogle changed some key guys either this off season or last off season. While one of the oldest clubs in Sweden they have been more miss than hit in my pinion.

But I openly admit when it comes to Swedish hockey I have my guilty pleasure in how certain teams develop players

in no order

Frölunda HC
Luleå HF (everyone remembers Omark from that organization--there is a reason why I had my concerns about him playing in the nhl)
Skellefteå AIK
Växjö Lakers ( I love the food in the arena)
Djurgårdens IF
Malmö Redhawks ( I maybe the only person on the planet who does not like their arena)

Thanks for the detailed intel. Is 3rd on the depth chart for their SHL or J20 team? If it's the latter I would agree that is a strange move indeed.

j20 team.

Like I said, Sweden is an interesting situation and is some what is the same boat with Finland. They emphasise practice and off is ice stuff, than on ice stuff in the younger players. That is one reason why often see lots of players on the year end rosters--the move up and down players to play. This is one reason that you often have people saying that it takes longer for European to develop to the NHL level. But when they do? They tend to have longer careers because they did not put their bodies through the same physical process than North American players did. Another reason we are seeing more NA kids go to UNI and why NHL teams now scout UNIS more/

But using Jonsson as the measure level--in the last 5 years he has played about 86 games with 31 games played last year and those 86 games will be a soft number as when teams is losing or getting blown out--they use the tandem goaltending and switch goalies up. I am trying to find his time on ice for those 86 games and how many games he played more than 40 minutes. Taylor Gautheir who split time between the WinterHawks and Cougars over the past 5 years appeared in 145 games by the time he draft eligable and was never drafted.. he was signed by the pens in March. It might be an bad example but I am using him as a game example.

Both Sweden and Finland realize that at 15/16/17 your body is still developing and they allow their JR players more rest but once they hit 20/21 years of age--they starting playing NHL style numbers of games in a season. And like the NHL there is no real off season. They hit camp in early August for games starting in late August and if the player is on a good team, they play in lots of tournaments during the season.

Also, with Jonsson he has not played in any SHL games yet--all games have been at their JR league level. By comparison, our friend Klefbom leading up to his draft year was already in the SHL and played about 30 games for Farjestad BK. He was on the team with Jonas Brodin of the Wild who ended up playing something like 60 games and going 10th over while Kelfbom went 19.

Interesting stat of the draft

I believe 20 goalies were taken.. 18 were taken in the 4th round or later. First goalies went in the 2nd round at 41 and 58.

It takes goalies longer to develop and I think the NHL drafting this year shows that

It will be a waste if the guy stays over in sweden, it only hurts your development most of the time as you move up and inevitablely are stuck well well down the depth chart. I firmly believe broberg would be father ahead right now if he had come over and player junior.

couldn;'t find another thread on this guy, seems to be playing pretty well, anyone been following him much? what are your thoughts on him? was taken 2022 round 5 #158 overall by Edmonton Oilers

BIK Karlskoga
HockeyAllsvenskan
GP: 17
GAA: 1.78
SV%: .925
SO: 5
W-L-T: 15-1-0
He's playing on the best team in the 2nd best league in Sweden. Not much to say until he reaches the SHL at the minimum imo.

greater concern is he is the back up on a team an equal to the AHL in north American terms.

You know I love my Swedes but my alarm bells are staring to go off with this guy. I did a little looking at him a few weeks ago when I was bored and I see he has battled some injuries and what not. But my biggest concern is that he has not gotten a wiff of the SNL so far. We own his rights until 2026. He was taken in the 5th and that is when you gamble and take projects

Well, hes a good kid, but I say this as a swede, hes awful at answering questions, and my guess he is nervous because he is so unused to this.

Thats great, hes great, they are great, the club is great

Everybody is great gif

3-0 Karlskoga vs Oskarshamn after one period, shots are 8-10. Jonsson in net after backing up the last two games.

First time watching an Allsvenskan game in ages. Karlskoga clearly looks like the better team, but it's not like Jonsson hasn't had to make any difficult saves.
