I think you’re moving goalposts so I’ll leave it at that. If you’re worried about his defensive game present an argument relative to his play not his size.

If you don't want to answer a simple question that I keep asking over and over that is your right...

I'm not convinced he can defend at the NHL level based exclusively on his size. Now he may be able to or he may not be able to. Scouts thought Caufield wouldn't be able to transfer his offensive game to the NHL based on his size. That's why he fell. And they were wrong. It remains to be seen whether Hutson can or cannot transfer his ability to defend to the NHL level. Very few small dmen can, hence the concern with his size. And, how many points he puts up at the NCAA level tells me nothing about whether he can defend at the NHL level.

That would sure be a fine thread title on the main board.

I noticed the numbers looking at stats in Hockeydb

The problem with MAB is he had a shot and nothing else. As an offensive dman he was a below average playmaker and offensively it's the primary role of a dman at 5v5. Had MB been a good playmaker he would have had a career. The playmaking ability of MAB was on par with good two way dmen and he was not a two way guy.
He also had zero defensive skill but I agree

He looks absolutely nothing like Bergeron lol

Does he need to?
Zero D skills with some offensive skills and undersized. Lots in common actually and you need to learn how to not take jokes so literal lol. Hutson does have a good stick though

He's apparently already tied the goal scoring record for a D+1 dman in the NCAA. He tied one of Fox/Makar and passed the other, can't remember which one. He's still got half a season left even with the world juniors. Goes to show how rare putting up goals as a freshman is since the record is 6.

But just look at his size though

The concern with his size has nothing to do with throwing hits. It has everything to do with being too weak to keep forwards boxed out, fight for loose pucks in the crease, board battles and close outs where he needs to be sturdy enough to push attacking forwards to the boards without getting run over. Every small dman you listed is bigger, stronger and faster than Hutson to varying degrees. Each one of them are also much better back skaters.

Hutson is a good prospect but he is very unique and is currently a whole different type of small than any dman that has made it in the NHL in decades.

As for Seattle, the consensus was that they had a great 2nd round with Firkus, Nyman and Goyette. I can't speak to Kokko as he is a goaltender but to arbitrarily dismiss the other three in favour of Hutson seems to be a hyper-biased comparison.

I agree with your last paragraph as the kid is a fierce competitor but we should treat him as a very unique prospect with a unique development curve as he is very dissimilar in too many ways from the dmen that you mentioned.
Give him some time, he will work on his flaws and he have time to work on that before the next step! He will not be a perfect player but he will learn with time how to positioning himself, how to make his stick more effective and his hockey sense will do the rest to compensate his size!

Quinn Hughes have only 1 hit in 17 games this year but he have some flaws in the defensive zone but they play him too much close to 25 minutes a night and they didn't really use it the right way to maximize his strength; they expose him too much but they have nothing else ...

He will never boxed out anyone or win the majority of his puck battle but he will find a way to be effective in a other way. The time of Sheldon Souray and Derian Hatcher who can broke his stick in throwing forecheck in the crease are memory of the past. In the new NHL you can't really use you physics at your advantage like before and you need to play the puck a lot more than before because you can't touch anyone without drawing a penalty.

I understand is pretty unique for a defenseman to have his package, maybe the first, and is really weak at the time but I simply don't see why the size can't stop him to make the next step! We are not talking about d*ck size where a inch can make all the difference in the world but a human body. Hutson have 68 or 69 inches tall and the others have 70 or 71. Some people talk about him like if is 3'8" and 82 lb ... He will keep growing and I think if someone know they need to work on his strength before the next level is Hutson himself!

I have never doubt that Caufield can make it, I know being a forward is a different world to be a midget defenseman but this guy are simply to good with the puck to didn't make the cut! Remember at the time of the big 3, Savard and Robinson are more all around player and Lapointe is the offensive gifted d-man without having the same role of the 2 others at 5on5 but they need him to be that sucessful. I think Hutson can bring the same thing in a lesser extent to his team in using him for is offensive strength and be a nice asset if you use him the right way!

I don't dislike the players the Kraken have taken, I really like Furkus at the time and be happy if you choose him with the 33 pick and Goyette at the rank they draft him it's a good pick but with 4 picks they need to try a guy who can be a homerun and it's more true than ever when is Vince Dunn or Justin Schultz are use to be your PP QB ...

I'd love to see some advanced stats about Hutson to give context to both his offense and defensive games. Based on the eye test I'd bet he is creating plenty of high danger chances and I'm going to guess he's doing ok defensively.

I went back and read an article about him in the Athletic from March. His coaches were saying that he takes a lot of pride in the defensive side of the game and thought he defended well.

He is good with his stick in the defensive zone, since he has high hockey IQ. But he does get overpowered sometimes on the back check. He’ll get stronger and also he’ll probably work on his speed. Like Caufield last year sometimes he was behind the player when he tried to defend and couldn’t overpower his opponent, kinda the same thing with Hutson sometimes, this year Cole has more speed so he can get in front of his opponent and defend with his stick. Hutson will have to gain a little speed.

I think he can defend well in terms of NCAA standards but NHL is tough man. Many guys 200+ lbs and skate very well. Hutson knows his challenges well so if he is obsessed to improve, he will add muscle and improve his skating/edge work in traffic. Muscle helps him not get injured when hit and skating helps him escape pressure and move the puck.

There is room for Hutson in our core if he is a 40+ D man which is projects to be. We have guys on D that can help shelter him.

Bader’s “analytics” model is a joke. The more production you have in junior the more he predicts you’ll produce in the NHL. Wow…. It’s a nice graph that says “look at this Liiga production”

(nothing against Hutson, rooting for him)
I agree. He also don't count international performances in his model, which is pretty inaccurate for most european players like Slafkovsky who get to play little minutes in pro leagues.

Lane did an interview on hockey360 on RDS an hour ago.

Can't find the actual video of the interview

Nice to see Habs media cover Hutson incredible start in the NCAA.

Quick resume;
He give credit to teammate and the team for his early success in the NCAA
His Dad helped him a lot over the years
He watched the Habs a bit, impressed with Cole & Nick
Taking the things day by day
Bruins fans don't chirp him at BU

I Had some fun with ai art converter;
