Okay, 1 more to go.
3rd gets underway.

Checker all alone and he shoots it wide with all kinds of net.

Berube a huge stop at the other end.Poulter a big stop on a 1-timer from the low slot.

Comet turnover and Poulter stands tall.

He's tall again on another shot!
Comets in big trouble.

Comets 2 efforts.
A pass through the slot by Thompson and a Groleau shot from the point and neither results in a shot to the net.

Comets to the PK. Dugan for hooking.

4 seconds into the PP and it's in. A blast from the left side. Over Poulter's shoulder.
Again I ask. Faceoffs don't matter, eh?

1-1

TV TO
13:59 to go

Charlotte 2 on 1 and Ibragimov makes a great play on the back check.

Comets get in on Berube. Big stop and the rebound lays in the crease and Halonen whiffs and on the rebound?

Checkers hit the post.

Comets get several chances and outskate the puck while carrying it. Go figure.

TV TO 3:18 to go.

Poulter another big stop in close.

Lose the draw another huge blast blocked in front

Poulter another huge stop.

Charlotte all over the Comets.

Dugan gets i n and is upended cutting to the net.

1:58 to go.

1 timer kicked out by Poulter.

Berube squeezes a Halonen shot from the right boards, dot high.

Checkers ice it.

Lose the draw.

Get back in. Berube loses it behind the net. puck slides lose into the slot and Halonen gets it 10 feet out and his shot never ends up on net. SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!

Period comes to an end.

OT
Comets have 1 point. 2 would be fantastic.

Schmelzer in all alone and Berube stopped him.
Charlotte comes back and wins it.

Comets lose it 2-1 in OT.

Syracuse 4 Lehigh Valley 1

Laval with a 17-1 shot scored their second at 8:31 and with the keeper on the bench tied it at 18:19.
Both of these teams are nipping at the Comets heels but I would prefer Laval get the win since they are 6 back and with the point already it's 5, Rochester is just 3 back.
On their 46th shot of the game Laval defeats the Amerks 4-3 in OT. The goal came shortly after they failed to score on a 2-minute PP.

SOG were 11-5 Rochester after 1
Laval outshot them 20-10 in the 2nd and 18-2 in the 3rd
finished with a 46-24 shot advantage.

Toronto 77
Syracuse 61 (1 game in hand)
Utica 60
Rochester 57 (2 games in hand)
Laval 55

Belleville 51
Cleveland 50 (2) games in hand

Top 5 make it and that means every team in this Division is still in it.

1st Period

Comets ice it twice in the opening seconds.

HOLTZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wrister from the the right dot---------------G_____O______A______L!!!!!!!!!!!! 5:25
Welcome back Alex!

After the Holtz goal Syracuse playing like a team possessed.
The Crunch can do anything they want with possession in the Comets end.
Faceoff to Poulter's right.
Comets lose the draw. Barre-Boulet comes out from around the faceoff alignment with the puck and from the edge of the left circle dot high scores over Poulter's glove side (left) shoulder.

9:02 1- 1

Crunch right back in and control the action once again.
1-timer by Declan Carlile from inside the center of the blueline. It's tipped in front by Lucas Edmonds for goal #2.

9:58 2-1
2 goals by the Crunch in 56 seconds.

Comets screw up and the Crunch break in 1 on 1 from the blueline with Holtz the only Comet back. Near the top of the circle Holtz poke checks the puck off the stick to break up the play.

In the Crunch end Holtz with his numbers to the defender is crushed into the boards and his head hits the dasher. He drops to his knees and is slow to get up. NO CALL!

As a result the puck squirts out and the Crunch have a breakaway with 2 comets on his heels all the way to the net front, but don't touch him as he beats Poulter from hand shaking distance.

17:51
3-1 Crunch

19:06 Barre-Boulet called for slashing
Comets get their 2nd PP. The first was at 11:45 and you would have never known the Comets were on the PP.

Watching this 2nd shit fest I have to voice a strong opinion.
TYCE THOMPSON SUCKS!!!!!!!
He cannot receive a puck on his stick without it bouncing off. Sometimes just a foot or so other times completly impossible to retrieve. When he has the puck he is brain dead. His IQ with the puck has to register in the negative column.

With a defender close when he gets the puck, it bounces off his stick. He collects it. Looks up and is dumbfounded. He doesn't have any idea where his nearest mate is. He can't beat the onrushing defender. Then either tries to dump it ahead or shoots it directly into the defender. The defender runs over him.

He tries to pass only when he realizes there is no more ice.
He hasn't beat a single defender while carrying the puck. He turns it over on his attempts.
He tries to shoot at the net when there is no net to shoot at.
He has absolutely no idea what he is doing or how to do it.
He hasn't scored a goal since Jan. 13 and has 7 on the season.

Foote isn't far behind him in terms of handling the puck on his own. Also can't beat anyone 1 on 1. However, he does shoot the puck at the net when he can and some of his rebounds have resulted in assists. He can also slide passes to mates close by which have also earned him some assists. In the last 4 games counting tonight he has accrued 4 assists in just such manners. Some of those shots have gone in. 16G/10A.

Like Walsh who makes 1 good play for every bad one the points can mount up. He turns it over on the PP more than he ever does anything good. More proof of that will come later in this post.

Back to the game.
With the Comets PP doing absolutely nothing, the 1st comes to an end.

3-1 Crunch

SOG
11-7 Crunch with what seems like a hundred more that were blocked, flubbed, deflected, shot wide. The Crunch OWNED the period.

Period 2 gets underway.
The rest of the PP runs out. 0/2 thus far.
Walsh gets the puck to Dugan on the left side and he slides a pass to Halonen coming down the middle. Betweeen the the hashes he lets fly and ...........................................................

S________________C___________________O______________R_______________E_________________S

1:20 gone in the period and the Comets claw back into it.

3-2 Crunch

2:23 Comets to the PP again.
JC!!!!!!!!!!!
Walsh refuses to believe he can't pass the puck directly through a defender. Over and over and over he kills their PP trying to do such over and over again. The 1st major problem their PP has is getting into the other team's zone. They always try to skate it in and turn it over again and again. Walsh is a major culprit here as well.

PP ends the same way as always. 0/3

A lot of the same with Syracuse controlling the offensive chances, but the Comets are playing a little better defensively, but Poulter has been good.

3 on 1 for the Crunch. Puck carrier carries it on the left side. now he drops it back into the slot and the Crunch player has a clear shot at the net from the low slot and..................

POULTER Is HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It doesn't seem to matter how big Poulter plays. The Crunch keep coming and the Comets keep playing on their heels and dropping back into their little gang leaving the points wide open making it impossible to get the puck out unless they get it amid their net front cluster.

S--T!!!!!!!! A wrister from the point beats a totally blind Poulter. There was a Crunch player all but standing on his toes. He never saw the shot. Way to protect your crease with your clusterf--k defensive system!

9:58
4-2 Crunch

Comets are like manakins in their own zone. Syracuse goes where they want. Pass wherever they want to whom ever they want , shoot whenever they want. If it's blocked, the Comets or the Crunch kick it back out to a pointman or if it goes wide, the points gather it in and the whole thing starts all over again. The only things that stop the assault are pucks out of play, icing, mistakes by the Crunch resulting in them clearing it out of the zone themselves, or Poulter hanging on for a whistle.

1158 Comets back to the PP.
Can't go through it again.
PP 0/4

A lot of the same with Syracuse controlling the offensive chances, but the Comets are playing a little better defensively, but Poulter has been good.

Wotherspoon brings it in, feathers a pass to Parent with some room. He lets fly from the left dot and >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> IT'S IN..............................................................................

G___________________O_____________________A____________________L

The Comets crawl back in again. Xavier Parent scores his 1st goal in 6 GP with the Comets up from ECHL Adirondack.

14:14
4-3 Crunch

A little back and forth now. More like 2 teams taking their chances.

Comets pressing and the net front is congested as the Crunch tie up Comets and shots are not getting through. Ibragimov is stumbling through the slot above the chaotic crease front and shoots a loose puck without any hesitation into the net.

G__________________O____________________A_______________________L!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Timur, after 53 Games with the Wichita Thunder, comes to the Comets in the San Jose Trade. The Comets, short on manpower, put him into their lineup and tonight in his 3rd game he scores to tie this one up at 4. It's the 2nd AHL goal of his 3 professional seasons. He had 1 with the San Jose Barracuda in 23 games in his 1st pro season. Not exactly the guy you would have bet to score.

17:21
4-4
2 goals in 3 minutes and 7 seconds.

22 seconds later and the Comets get PP #5.
Once again the PP plain sucks. They couldn't even get possession in the attcking zone.

2nd period ends.

4-4

SOG
14 -8 Syracuse

2- period total
25-15 Crunch

Crunch have only had 1 PP. If the refs play the game management routine, the Crunch are due a few PPs.

Verry early on and Engaras takes a sliding lateral pass from Foote at the attacking blueline. He cuts to the middle and from between the dots lets a wrister go--------------------------

Crunch come roaring back.
SHOT- Crossbar!

Schmlzer blocks a shot and it comes to Foote. The 2 break out and Foote gives it to Schmelzer. They break into the Crunch ends 2 on 1.
Schmelzer to Foote and Alnefelt makes a sprawling save.
He can't control the rebound.
Schmelzer swats at it with the lone defender getting a piece of it.
Schmelzer gets it right back and fires it over the still sprawled keeper and the down D-man>>>>>..................................................................................................................>

>>>>>>>>>>>>G---------------O--------------A------------L!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comets score again. This time shorthanded! Shorty #6 on the season.

RYAN SCHMELZER, the grinder should be 3rd line center, forced to play between the team's top 4 forwards each night. Sometimes the line is their #1 and sometimes it's #2. He has 21 assists on the season tied for 3rd on the team with the now defunct Andreas Johnsson.
This was only Ryan's 5th G of the season. He always passes the puck to the linemate he sees as the better chance to score as he did on this 2 on 1 passing it to Foote.

2:43
6-4 Comets
2 more goals 1 in 2 minutes and 19 seconds.

Comets are all of a sudden playing as if they have an idea of how to play the game. Playing hard on the puck. Taking away space. Clearing their zone. Getrting the puck up ice and directing shots at the goal. Hard forecheck.

6:38 Comets to the PP again. Play it a little better but come up empty.
PP 0/6

8:14
Thompson - 2 for goalie interference
Myers high Sticking - retaliation on Tyce

10:29 Holtz 2 for tripping.

Great kill!!!!!!!
Crunch never got set up. Several length of the ice clears one right after another. A little successful O-zone pass blocks and redumps.

12:55
Holtz got freed and and 25 seconds later the Crunch get called for too many men.

Another scoreless PP. Comets now 0/7.

4:59 to go
The keeper is pulled. The Crunch coach doesn't wait around when the team is down by 2 or 3 late in the 3rd. 5 to 6 minutes is normal for pulling his goalie.

Out with an injury and scores his 3rd 5 minutes into the game.

Plays a 1 on 1 like a D-man and breaks up the play with a strong poke check. He was a threat all night and made good pass after good pass. Got to get him going on all cylinders.

Is Halonen quietly turning into a legit AHL player? He's seemingly on the scoresheet much more lately.
He's been hot is all I can say.
So has Dugan.

Maybe not having to compete with what they assumed were the better players has awakened them. Johnsson was traded. Clarke has been missing and is now AWOL. Thompson is terrible. Pinho has been out of the lineup for weeks, but wasn't a whole lot anyways. Fooe is Foote and he's centered them as well as having had the chance to skate with Schmelzer which has been helpful to any 2 wings he's had.

Or maybe, especially Halonen, they are finally figuring out how to play with this array of spare parts that the Comets were constructed out of. There is only one real center on the roster at the moment, Schmelzer.
Stevens - 7 games, Pinho - 9 games (also not really a center), Hutchison - 5 games have been injured.

After Schmelzer and accepting that Thompson just plain can't do it, the Comets have been running with Foote, Talvitie not much more than an ECHL or middling #4/5 AHL center, and Engaras, a true ECHL center. It's been hectic to say the least, but they have been scoring more goals than their season norm of 1 or 2 of late, but did get a point in their last 1- goal effort.

Holtz will be a player to follow after.
- He is always moving. Something the Comets besides Johnson and Gambardella haven't been doing.
- He passes the puck to get the puck. Something it appears Dineen hasn't emphasized.
- He shoots without hesitation when pucks are passed to him in a shooting situation. No settling the puck, no resetting it up, no checking for the right spot first.
- He is always looking to find open ice.
- He is aware of the whole ice surface and knows when to get back and when to force forward. How else do you explain a goal scoring right wing in the offensive zone ending up the only Comet to get back on what would have been a breakaway and end up playing the Crunch player 1 on 1 and making a streong defensive poke check to break up a scoring chance and allowed for the cavalry to arrive.

Holtz is not the same Holtz that played here last season. He is taking care of business in all 3 zones and is still just as dangerous offensively as always. I can't say as much for the line mates he's skated with thus far.

Dose anyone have the skinny on Graeme Clarke. He was reassigned to Utica last Friday and was not in Utica on the weekend, thus missing Friday's game with Charlotte, a 2-1 OT loss, and Sunday's afternoon game with Syracuse, a 6-4 Comets victory. Sunday afternoon Jayson Shaya reported Clarke was reassigned to Utica for the weekend, but was "unavailable" for the game with no further explanation.

Illness? Family issue? Injury incurred with the Devils practicing? Angry at this reassignment without having been given any game action?
Nothing on the Comets internet site.
Nothing from Birnell on the Rome sentinel site.

WTF? Just interested in an explanation for what's going on.

He did not miss Friday or Sunday games because of NJ. They reassigned him on 3/3/30. Why he didn't play either game on 3/3 or 3/5 is still unanswered. Graeme Clarke has been reassigned but he is "unavailable" begs question.

He didn’t play with the team until 3/8 according to the article, so he was likely sick or hurt. I couldn’t find any other info but it’s likely not more complicated than that.

Look, I am just saying he was reassigned on 3/3. The Comets played on 3/3 and 3/5. He was said to be "unavailable".
When a guy is sick, as Daws has been, they say the guy is sick.
When a guy is injured, they say he is injured.
When a guy has a family issue, they say he has a family issue.
When a guy is a healthy scratch, they say he is a healthy scratch.
When they say a guy is here but is unavailable, that is just not a coherent explanation.

He was practicing 3/8 and nobody had a thing to say about where he'd been. I'd just like to know what was going on. Probably a simple explanation, but I'm not buying "unavailable".

Maybe something personal they didn’t want to share? Family issue? Given the short duration probably something relatively minor but worthy of privacy?

Huh…

Losing Dugan doesn’t make this feel great.

They got Hayes for Future Considerations. (Granted Dugan was free but still.)
