When you factor in the additional year at 1 million, it was essentially a 5 year/19.9 million dollar contract, or in between 3-4.

TBH, i think some people emphasize the RFA/UFA aspect of contracts far too much for middle six guys, especially when it comes to the difference in AAV. He either exceeds the deal and you work something out or he doesn't and you let him walk. He was never going to be anything more than what we saw that year.
Maybe but Labanc's specific situation has a lot of variables at play that are legitimately interesting to discuss to me. I still wouldn't have been happy with a 5 year, 20 mil deal after his 56 point season. Not for someone only really showing himself at a 3rd line level but able to manufacture power play production. Don't get me wrong, that production is valuable but 5 years when he's still very shaky at evens above the 3rd line? It just doesn't seem to be the kind of gamble you take regardless of your team's situation.

I would be thrilled with that kind of production at 4 million a year. To put it into context, Kevin is currently outside the top 250 contracts in terms of AAV with his current deal. If he was making 4 he'd be right around 300 which means on average he'd be the tenth highest paid player about on every team.

And he still wouldn't be worth it to me. He's just too limited a player moreso then than now. They should've used the cap crunch as an excuse to trade him for futures since they needed cap space anyway and were purging far too much to expect them to maintain their competitive level.

Good. Get rid of all the mediocrity

We'd have to fold the team.

Harrington is just depth who stayed up for two games because Nuttivara is hurt. He'll clear waivers and probably be called back up Friday to sit in the press box, unless Nuttivara is healthy. The Sharks bank a tiny bit of cap space as a result, at the cost of maybe, maybe losing Harrington to another team (who cares).

There is nothing mediocre about Meier, Hertl, Karlsson, Couture, Barabanov or Ferraro.

First, I think you're taking my statement too literally.

Second, that's barely a starting lineup and lacks a goalie, so it's not exactly praise.

Third, "mediocre" actually means "average" or "unremarkable," and I'd argue that Barabanov and Ferraro are exactly that - a complementary middle-six forward who has excellent chemistry with Hertl, and a middle-pairing defenseman who can't drive his pair. Most of our team is decidedly below mediocre.

Finally, if you compared that group to any other teams top six players (or merely skaters), the Sharks would still rank in the bottom half of the standings. So, while those players are good players in the universe of legitimate NHL players, as a collective group there a pretty mediocre set of stars.

While I don’t agree with all of those I do appreciate how you remain so positive about the Sharks. Good on ya.
I appreciate you saying so. It’s all I know when it comes to this team that I love. I readily admit that it’s not easy to keep that at the forefront here on this site. The bitterness and negativity is hard to overlook. Such is the way.

Found a graph for you:

You're right, he's not mediocre. He's actually one of the worst players in the league.

I have so many thoughts on this.

1. JFresh is shit and his charts are shit.

2. Barabanov has played top line minutes so don’t know why they are labeling him as a second liner.

3. Barabanov is not anywhere close to the worst player even on this team, never mind the league.

4. He is the latest example of guys getting overplayed because of chemistry with our top forward. We saw it for years with guys like Melker, Sorenson, etc. being put on Jumbo’s wing when they shouldn’t have.

Look Barabanov is one of my least favorite players on this team. He is soft, he is always injured, and he’s kind of expensive for what he brings. He’s a complimentary winger in the mold of like a Gustav Nyquist but worse. We should have traded him when his value was high at the TDL last year but we didn’t. We should have let him walk but we didn’t. I still don’t understand why neither of these things happened.

I dont know why he wasnt traded but they did not let him walk because they did not believe they had other viable options and were not going to pay for someone in the FA market
They did have other viable options though. I mean Chmelevski did what Barabanov did and would have come at less than half the price. 2.5M for 3 years is expensive for a complimentary skill winger that honestly isn’t super skilled.

I basically agree with all of this. I also don’t really care about Barabanov or the contract anymore. He’s a warm body who helps the tank for two years and there’s no chance Grier keeps him beyond that point.

honestly I probably would have shoved bancer on that line and hoped for the best but it is what it is

Definitely. I’m in the same boat. I think Labanc, Eklund, Barabanov all fill the same role. You can throw in Dahlen too. All obviously various degrees. I think we could have gotten rid of two of those guys and had the same effect.
