Blackwood would be smart to sign with SJ if he wants to improve his career as there will be plenty of ice time.

I think he is trying to get the most money possible this year because it’s probably his last NHL contract.
I think there are probably a bunch of teams that see him as a worthwhile reclamation project. He was highly regarded just 2 years ago.

The 6th is a sunk cost. We should hold firm and not overpay him IMO.

The other thing is if you're Blackwood, you hold for more from SJ than you do a better team because playing behind this defense is not going to earn you any additional money on your bigger contract next offseason. Given we were already doing the dance of trading picks at the end of the draft for drafts 2 years from now (indicating we were out of draftable players from our lists), the 6th rounder is of no consequence to me.

I recall a couple of drafts ago, on the draft floor, Doug Wilson was asked in the spot if he was trading for Pacioretty. He smiled and said something along the lines of, I can’t talk about it. Would he finally don a teal sweater?
I don't know why he would want to unless it's a one year deal and a secret agreement of being traded at the deadline.

Much like the nixed Bieksa trade, I almost cried tears of happiness when the Pacioretty trade to the Sharks was confirmed not happening. Keep that dude far away from this team.

If the current prospects hit these are the lines I like.
Eklund - Smith - Halttunen
Musty - Bystedt - Lund/Gushchin

Although in a perfect world it would look like

Eklund - Smith - Halttunen
Lund/Gushchin - Celebrini - Hertl
Musty - Bystedt - Lund/Gushchin

Great mix of size, playmaking, snipers on each line.
Looks very nice!

Nashville buying Duchene out and retaining 50% on Johansen instead of the other way around seems like an inexplicably stupid decision.
Particularly because Duchene also had zero no trade protection until tomorrow. Surely could have fetched value for him at $4M a year or at least given him away for free.

Sharks should totally check the market, there are some young players not qualified looking for spots. I know we need to tank, but also if there is value you need to try something. I would take guys that are young and have some potential, try them out. Ethan Bear could be cool.

EDIT: Thought Ethan Bear was younger...

Maybe nobody wanted him at 50% even for free? I can’t think of any other logical explanation.

If I was Grier I would qualify Gregor, Peterson, Zetterlund, Kaut and Svechnikov.

Let go of Mann, Blackwood, Gadjovich
So, on one day, you trade for Blackwood and the next day, you let him go?
Why make the trade? I know, I know, you wouldn’t have done it but the fact remains that we traded for him.
Your way is bad asset management.

Only player I really want to qualify is Peterson and maybe Zet because on the trade.
Don't qualify Gregor, that train is gone.

I can't wait until free agency starts and we see a steady spamming of "Fire GMMG" posts again

Not sure what happened during the draft, but im not letting that meme die on my watch

What's your suggestion? They can either sign him or qualify him. I doubt they want to qualify him and he may not want to sign with the Sharks for their offered amount.

Man, all these buyouts and players being literally given away does not bode well for a potential Karlsson trade. Teams really seem to value cap space above all else right now.

I know Karlsson is an elite player but given the current landscape I think we need to brace ourselves for a really poor return.

The draft pick is a sunk cost, so the question is whether it is worth qualifying him at his current price or not. If he's not, let him walk. It would then have been a poor trade, but there's no reason to justify a bad extension based on the acquisition cost

Cal Foote, Max Comtois and Sam Steel are some interesting names to look at
Foote yes. Comtois for sure and I think Steel were on the WJC team that’s being investigated. I don’t know if they’re actually involved or not but I’d steer clear of guys from that team until the investigation is done (likely end of this summer).

I totally agree about the sunk cost. We need a back up though. If we aren’t going to use the money, might as well overpay him by a million for a year and call it a day on backups rather than rush one our young goalies. They saw enough potential to make the trade. Stand by that but only for a year.

Oh I'm fine with that. Just saying we shouldn't care about the draft pick anymore.
