Its like sending a soldier back into war after not having time to finish a surgery ... thats what the roster is like.. a work in progress. I dont think Lemieux shouldve been signed given after signing Fiala (and backlog of wings in development).. Kupari for sure could become a solid 4th liner - and would just need some boxing lessons.
The thing is Lemieux can’t keep anyone in check either. He’s not a real threat due to his size and he’s more of an agitator than a fighter

Scratching Durzi is so f***ing stupid. For all the shit he got for last game Roy is complete trash without any upside. Durzi made the turnover but he recovered into position while Roy did zero and gave up the slot. Walker and Roy are the 7th dman on this team. I’ll give many passes to Durzi because with talent like that on offense you find someone to support his playstyle rather than try to mute it. This entire narrative that Roy is good on defense was a stint of impressive defense but man he’s been bad for a while. He does nothing on offense and the dude has little to offer.

Spence Clarke and Durzi offer a ton more to the team than Walker and Roy. Walker is essentially stetcher and Roy is just a spectator on defense and invisible on offense

Kinda stems back to a big problem (for me at least). A young player like Durzi makes a terrible play, he gets scratched. A veteran makes a terrible play (or has a rough stretch of games) and he'll get time to "work through it."
It wasn’t just one mistake though, he made several poor plays both with the puck and positionally. The last play may have been the final straw in terms of it being him or Walker but it wasn’t one play.

The way Vilardi and Byfield played I hope they stay together to build on it. It’ll also give AK an opportunity in the top 6 to make a point.

Ha, I mean I get it and generally I'm sympathetic to it (Grundstrom comes to mind immediately), but Durzi was-IMO-sloppy at various points. Also, we've got Clarke (and Spence) right there. Walker should be on notice too. Also, Doughty is more than simply a "veteran," no? We're not talking about Edler here.

Incoming shutout now.

I am surprised that Durzi is out, I would've figured after his play last year and his short pre-season that would've given him some leeway. He deserves to sit no doubt, but I didn't the coaching staff would do that.

Yup. How many times was Edler allowed to get his back blown out by McDavid in the playoffs without any reduction in icetime ? McDavid displayed the entire Kama sutra on Edler with zero punishment.

I'm hoping that we won't have to discuss the D for much long in any case. Hoping for:

Doughty-Anderson
Clarke-Trade
Spence-Bjornfot

Next season.

7th can be whoever fits under the cap. Moverare and Grans come to mind if one of them takes a step.

Might not need to trade for 2LD. Soucy is set to be a ufa in 9 months.

Guys like Durzi and Roy need to be paired with an offensive defenseman. That way they can just sit back and play defense. Durzi needs this more than Roy and even then, I don't know if Durzi plays a sole defensive role.

I mean all we know is that Durzi is scratched. We don't know why. Arvidsson's out too. Both guys are recovering from surgery in the offseason, they're almost certainly behind in their conditioning assignments, I wouldn't be surprised if they were going to be in and out of the lineup to start the year regardless.

I also think Lemieux needs to be in the lineup. Our fourth line is better with him and Grundstrom.

Fiala - Kopitar - Kempe
Moore - Danault - Vilardi
Iafallo - Byfield - Kaliyev
Lemieux - Lizotte - Grundstrom

Anderson - Doughty
Edler - Clarke
Walker - Roy

Wait, you're suggesting that Durzi should be the defensive defenseman on his pairing? I don't understand this logic at all. Durzi's our least defensive defenseman.

“Sometimes you add really good players to your lineup and we’ve done that and you might want to try and be something you’re not. We’re 60 minutes into a season and the first two questions I’ve gotten are about identity and you guys are doing the exact same thing that I’m doing, you’re comparing it to last year and that’s my whole point, it starts all over again. What do you want to be, how can we win, what should we be. We’re figuring that out right now.”

Might be good for him. Learn some defense.
On another note, we should pick up Clifford. Need that physical presence.

I understand, and I'm sure ultimately it was just about giving Clarke an opportunity. But Durzi wasn't the only bad defenseman. All things being equal, it's more likely a vet will get time to "sort it out" versus a rookie getting punished for equally poor play.

I understand someone had to be benched ultimately, but do you think Edler would have been benched over Durzi if he made the same play? Or Roy? I'm just not confident.

He won't say it, but I kind of feel like Todd is afraid to start Cal.
I wanted to bet on the Kings again tonight to chase my brutal loss from Tuesday but wasn't going to touch it if Cal was in net.

After Quick's performance on Tuesday and Cal's preseason trash, it seems like an easy decision to go back to 32 tonight. As Herby mentioned earlier, you don't want to start off 0-2 before heading out on a long road trip.

Why are you trying to compare a player who has 60 NHL games played to players who have hundreds? It makes zero sense.

Durzi was Durzi - and contributed on offense and did Durzi play at the end costing the game - price of doing business w Durzi.. but Clodd blames him, when he shouldve never been on the ice in the first place. Roy was a disaster the entire game and deserves the press box over Durzi.

No issue with Durzi being scratched, would not have surprised me if the plan before the Vegas game was to have Clarke play in Durzi's place tonight. Makes the most sense to me as you cannot have Walker come out as I do not think Durzi or Clarke are strong enough to play their off side. I think we will see Durzi and Clarke rotating till Clarke hits 9 games and gets sent back to the CHL.

who would you play Clifford over?
