I wonder who would be NHL ready of the Top 3. Bedard obviously. I think Carlsson can make a smooth transition to the NHL since he is in a men’s league. Fantilli maybe the following year If he chooses to stay in college one more year?
Bedard isn't going back to the CHL, but he can't go to the AHL due to his age. To the NHL he goes, but that doesn't mean he's NHL ready.
Carlsson's point production has looked great this year, but he's had an up-and-down year with the team. While he's putting up points in the playoffs, it's a small sample. I'd like for him to bring that for most of next season in the SHL. His SHL team is a far better situation than our situation next year, especially since we don't know who our coach will be. Let Carlsson stay to develop against men another year and then his transition won't be as steep at the NHL level.
Fantilli could make the jump next year, but he might wear down like McTavish did this year. Fantilli is in a similar situation to Carlsson. They're in great programs. Being in the NCAA will help Fantilli with his physical growth and endurance. The recent top, first round picks from Michigan have all went an extra season before coming to the NHL in D Power, C Beniers, and F Kent Johnson. D Luke Hughes is in his second year at Michigan this year. He's set to sign with the Devils as soon as his NCAA hockey career is over with.
I really like Michigan's program and that extra year seems to do their players well at the NHL level. Also, Fantilli's game didn't take off until after the WJC's. He's learning how to play team puck than hero puck.
