Wither all the Leafs memes. Tampa really was the better team except for G2, but Leafs with all kinds of OT puck luck.

I’m stupefied that Sammy had the game of his life to lift the curse - that very sentence has broken my brain.

Think I will take an evening stroll and literally touch grass.

Come on dude, these were things that were widely reported at the time. You're pretending like I'm making this shit up.

RMNB has the easiest archive to search thru (RIP the old Japer's Rink site, their archives are all currently mid-dated after the site move :( ), and WaPo puts a paywall on old articles. So here ya go:

“It’s been a while since Holtby’s been the top of his game. You can see the shakiness in it and the team recognized that Korn was out and about doing other aspects of his job. But they brought him back in and tried to get this thing straightened out before it’s too late.”

"He returned to limited day-to-day operations when goaltender Braden Holtby went through a difficult stretch during February and March."

You willing to stop putting your head in the sand, now?
I think it's funny you're arguing with me because you misunderstood my original hypothesis hence my reading comp comment. Thanks for doing the homework...I wasn't going to do it.

Beating Tampa no less.

At least we got a decent return for trading his RFA rights right

Are you a swimmin Sammy fan now?

Did you even watch the series?!?

Samsonov played great and was a huge part in stealing the series, in which Tampa was the better team in 5 of 6 games.

Yeah I mean Sammy let in some bad goals but once things settled down in every game he came up huge when he had to. All of the comeback games and tonight had long stretches of him completely bailing the team out but he locked it down. If he falters it looks like Murray will be back shortly and Joseph Woll has looked really good in limited games (and honestly could challenge for the starting job next season).

A little weird that Caps fans would root for TB at all given our history with them, and their frontrunner status the last few years that includes all that salary cap shenanigans.

Is the Leafs hate that strong? Why?

Yeah, I don’t get it. Maybe just an HF thing? Why would Caps fans feel any animosity towards the Leafs?

They won in spite of him. Yes he played ok for a portion of each game but if you look at the goals he allowed, they are peewee. The leafs simply overcame is 1 or 2 bad goals that occur every game like clockwork. When they lose it will because of him

Not rooting for Tampa. Rooting against vanny and Sammy for wasting the last 2 years of the Caps maybe doing something.

Blaming young goalies for not being ready?

Blame the GM for putting them in that position.

Main boards, man. I have no love for Tampa but they've already succeeded a few times and haven't produced a Golden State level of bandwagon fans so... status quo, I guess.

Leafs fans wanted everyone to eat crow on their goalies back in like... November. Their worst fans often remind me of, like, young adolescents who try to physically intimidate and bully adults because they know they're operating with the legal upper hand. Too loud too early, no class, and when they get checked the crying is so deserved you realize it's kind of why you were watching in the first place.

I have very bland feelings about the team and its players, but right now I can't think of a more graceless group of fans. The "Leafs are rent free" and "center of the universe" stuff is already bad right now when they don't do much.

Definitely this (history). And that (cap crap).

Some posters here have cited behavior of Leaf fans on these boards as the reason for rooting against them. Not a feeling I share since I almost never visit the mains. So they feel entitled? The team's history is enough karma that I don't have to waste any emotions on them.

To add: HTFN beat me to it. Before posting, I had spent a few minutes looking at the results of the 03 playoffs which iirc the Caps lost in part due to a hose job by the refs.

Every goalie let’s in bad goals… and more frequently than ppl will want to admit. It’s just the nature of the game. Ppl seem to have a bias against their own goalies if they don’t already like them and can’t get out of their way to see it just something that happens in this sport.

Outside of the two Covid playoffs, even the great Vas is fairly pedestrian. For the most part, successful teams need to be able to overcome bad goals against in the run of a game.

This teams mishandling of Samsonov was bad.

That's fine but I can't see letting fans on a message board make these decisions for me. Every team has some asshole fans and I spent plenty of time taking personal abuse from Leafs fans as a global mod. But I try to separate the team from the fans in most cases.

By extension, Pens fans coming around singing kumbaya won't make me like the Pens.

Sammy was the guy we all knew in Game 5, and the guy wear glimpses of in spurts in Game 6. He played really well last night, especially at the start when an early goal or 2 could have cratered the Leafs. Hope he keeps it going

Sammy’s mishandling of the puck was the only thing that was bad. He was drafted 8 years ago. The team gave him plenty of time. Don’t hate to see him doing well now but I’m glad he’s not on this roster anymore

Don't care one way or the other. Sometimes players need a new team.

This team wouldn't be in FLA's shoes taking BOS to G7 just by swapping in Sammy so it doesn't matter.

It's not Leafs hate, it's Sammy hate. He was the punching bag, and still is, and nothing will change that. I expect Mantha will receive the same if he's ever traded.

People can't accept he made a few mistakes, but was insanely unlucky, and left out to dry here. Can't accept that he's actually got some talent that just needed coaching and molding.

Oh not at all, f*** 'em.

But this is like 95% of my hockey interaction and it's a more fun and peaceful place with some balance in it. As a whole I'm more content when the bragging rights are all over the place and smaller market teams are cock of the walk. I don't like Tampa or any of the former Southeast very much but they've won enough by now that it's become boring and there aren't too many of them.

Sure, none of this matters, the games don't even matter, but it's more fun to be here when there aren't a ton of knobs to sift through. This place was a pit sometimes when Chicago was doing their winning and Leafs fans are knobs half the time now, so since I don't gamble I use these opinions to give myself something of a rooting interest.

I always thought of the Leafs kinda like the Cowboys. Massive fan base. Don’t know if it’s genuine hatred people have for them, but it’s fun to see the different ways they manage to lose every year.
