I don't really like Matthews, but I'm also ready for the reign of Tampa to be over. The Leafs fanbase on HFBoards and social media is whatever. Every fanbase is obnoxious when you talk to the wrong people.

not wrong at all but it's a percentage game, and some high volumes can be worse than others

You do remember the original plan was Lundqvist before his heart took him out of the game forever, right?
Think we all knew the king wasn't taking this team to the promise land. He was suppose to be more of a mentor figure. Unfortunate about his medical condition of course but the rangers didn't let him walk thinking they would meet him in the playoffs

But that's the point. Samsonov with a very veteran mentor backup is the plan, not "hey let's do rookies and see how it goes". Everything after was improv, and then Vanacek did well enough that you couldn't just ignore it in that first season so... then what do you do?

Oh I do. Gm should have been fired for that tandem getting 2 years

Trading a 2nd round pick to get Vanecek back from Seattle when they pretty much did us a favor by not taking Jensen or Dillon instead after being handed the perfect opportunity to roll with Samsonov + cheap vet backup was icing on the cake.

Boston going into game 7 with a backup goalie. Man I want to bet the panthers and watch Boston choke after all that hype.

Would love for this to happen, but they are at home and will be highly motivated. And Swayman had a heck of a season himself. It's an undeniably huge amount of pressure on him.

God I hope they fold.

I do wonder if the obnoxious fan base thing is more common with the Canadian teams? Oilers fans are pretty bad as well and Calgary's are even worse. Even a couple of years ago when Montreal made the finals their fans were suddenly talking about this new era and Les Habs rising from the ashes and back being a contender (and we all know how that went, lol).

Maybe because it's their national sport, they feel some kind of entitlement? Even though it's been 30 years since a Canadian team won a Cup. Which is kind of bad in and of itself.

Lundqvist was playing pretty bad hockey at that point of his career. There’s a reason he was dirt cheap.
Still, two rookie goalies was a last second pivot not some lesson in hubris

05-06 Detroit 124 lost 1st Round
09-10 Washington 121 lost 1st Round
15-16 Washington 120 lost 2nd Round
18-19 Tampa Bay 128 lost 1st Round
21-22 Florida 122 lost 2nd Round
22-23 Boston 135 ??

Since the lockout, no team that has accrued 120 or more points has even made the Conference Finals, and at least half of them lost in the 1st round. The combination of parity, regression, and variance contributes so much more to results randomness. Because of parity, any team that performs that well in a regular season is likely running quite hot above expectation in both shooting and saving percentages, because the salary cap prevents talent accumulation that would lead to a legit edge in skill/ability. In a 7 game sample, with regression looming, it's not surprising that these teams have struggled in the playoffs.
