Almost every single deal and signing Verbeek has made has been underwhelming so far... At least Klingberg is only signed for 1 year... Vatrano and Strome straight are passengers but that's usually what you get in free agency.

Listening now, sounds overall a tad bit disappointed with everything but not looking to make any significant changes right now or even anytime soon. looking for general improvement over the course of the year

Verbeek wants that Top 3 pick, Can’t say I blame him. As long as the kids keep taking strides then it’s fine. McTavish is looking really good. Z is struggling with stupid decisions and Eakins needs to make him accountable, he benched him once and it worked, needs to do it again.

Notes from the interview

* PV said at the beginning of the season he expected us to be at or near .500

* Said he would split the first quarter into 2 segments, the team did not compete hard enough in the first 10 games, has liked the compete in the last 10 games.

* Not happy with special teams, knows it's really hurting the team

* Didn't know much about Hinds before camp but has been very impressed with him ever since, Alexis also asked him about Warren, Moore, Luneau, Mintyukov, Zellweger, Gaucher who he also praised. Sees Mintyukov and Warren potentially forming a great pairing for the future. Mintyukov and Zellweger will need to round out their defense for the NHL level. Likes Gaucher as a Center.

* Was asked about signing Lacombe and Thrun. Praised both but notes they will be able to make a decision.

I expected them to be something like 9-10-3 at this point, Looking back at some of those close games it’s not so far-fetched. The team will improve but not by much.

Anyway, thanks for sharing.

Say what you want, but we are dead last in the league... repeat, DEAD LAST.

yeah I know, tank... blah blah. We may end up getting a top pick, but at what cost? I still don't like the all or nothing strategy, and I think it will backfire on multiple levels.

I don’t think it’s a strategy, I think he wanted to take a step forward and ended up taking one or two back.

It’s a tough spot, you pretty much can’t rebuild a defense overnight and basically the only way to properly build one out is through the draft. I do wonder if trading Manson is going to end up being a mistake, that’s a pretty nice presence that could’ve been used right now.

I like Fleury and was disappointed that he wasn't protected. Would look good on Ducks blue line right about now. Just think you have oversold how much Murray liked him.

Two points.
1) Murray traded for Fleury.
2) Fleury was an example of acquiring a bottom-pairing D for cheaper to help prevent putting three rookies on the ice at the same time. It could be another D, but since Fleury looked great here in his short stint and Seattle was healthy scratching him often, a potential trade seemed kismet. Eakins made Fleury look promising here.

I'm loving Hinds' game! Glad to see Verbeek is on his radar, he did sign Hinds to an ELC druing/after training camp. Thing is that Hinds only displayed his defensive game at rookie camp. Verbeek is probably more impressed after seeing his offensive game in the Q this year.

As for the college guys, I wonder if they can't talk about contracts and such while they're still in school and playing. Kinda like if an NHL sends an under 20-year old prospect back to the CHL, then the prospect has to be in the CHL until his season is over.

Thanks for the summary!

Thanks for the summary. The bit about the .500 makes me laugh though.

Really? He thought this team was going to be near .500 going into the season? He knows he didn't / couldn't bring in reinforcements. It's debatable that we brought in enough offence to outscore the holes left on D already.

For those of you saying “ I don’t see us good until 2025” I guess you just forget how much cap room we have? If by the end of this season, zegras is a point a game player( who in the offseason will add more bulk) and mctavish is producing at a 2c/3c who finally this offseason will get some much needed rest ( and work on his speed ) with Terry a top forward in the nhl. And guys like comtois showing promise. We sign a true #1/2 dman resign kulikov and another top line forward (with the abundance of cap room we have) and add in the prospects in the system. All while bumping strome down to #3c and we’re ready to compete next season. Edit i dont know who’s available next off season as far as top pairing dmen( we will have to overpay a bit) but if that player is the right age. Gm PV will do so. Edit the bump in salaries to Terry and zegras get helped off by old contracts being off the books finally. Guys like shatty and silf gone too. All while being replaced with elc guys like perrault

Yeah if I can predict how a season is going to go better than the GM than you're in trouble. I called this team shit and it was so obvious it would be bad with the roster we have. How could someone that knows a single thing about hockey think we would be .500 or better.... that is quite alarming.....

I don’t put much stock into that quote. I don’t think Verbeek had much expectation for where the team would place in the standings at all, this year was always about development and him evaluating what he has to work with and what he needs to bring in. I really don’t understand why people can’t just accept that and have fun watching the young guys, look forward to what will be another eventful deadline for us in terms of selling, and then see how the front office actually plans to round out this roster. This is how the first year of a GM of a bad team typically goes

It‘s a combination of Verbeek building some false expectations with his initial press conference saying that the team was midway through the rebuild, then saying what he wanted in a team, then deconstructing the team to where it looks like he removed 90% of the players that fit that image, then making people read between the lines to hear that he was trying to build for the future this (and really 1-2 more if you listen to what he said) seasons. Mix that with the healthy message boards attitude of both overrating our players/prospects and everyone thinking that they know more than the coaches, owners, management, and their pets, and here we are.

We traded all the good defensemen and kept all the bad ones. Literally amazing :sarcasm:
