Rumor: 2022-2023 Trade Rumors and Free Agency: The Search for a 2C

Comph started to change my mind last season with his PK’ing and defensive improvements but he really changed my mind when Naz went down in the playoffs and Compher played a crucial role in sweeping the oilers and taking 2 of 3 against Tampa as the team’s 2C.
Change your mind as in they should resign him?

I would not be opposed to the Avs re-upping JTC. If you let him go you have to find someone to replace him and like it or not there aren’t a ton of players who do what he does. I’m kinda surprised I of all people am typing this as I was ready to trade him for a wet dishrag at the beginning of last season.

I mean, I'm tempted, but what happened last time he got paid? Turned into a pumpkin immediately, and while most of the team was on the up, and improving.

No f*** that. If we can afford only one I'd keep ERod.

That said we can afford none. Both players walk.

This is probably wishful thinking; but maybe the contracts will stop being so expensive in light of the anticipated meager cap increase. Rodrigues is a great fit on this team and I’d love him back. Compher is our best role player and I’d want him back too. But the prices are going to really suck if the overpay trend continues. I feel like JTC’s contract was an overpay until the last 12 months, he’s almost for sure going to luck out and make some bank somewhere else. I hope he’d take a sweetheart deal with us, but no one does that unless you are Cale and it’s still many millions.

I’d argue you run a bigger risk with an unknown quantity than him. And to be fair that last contract was signed with bigger expectations in mind. I think now both sides understand what kind of player he is and what he isn’t.

Let his ass walk. Not because he's bad, but he has the same problem as Graves. Bednar trusts him too much.

Change my mind as in, I used to think he brought absolutely nothing to the table. He used to be classified as a good PK’er simply because he played a lot of PK minutes even though his PK’ing ability was beyond poor. Same with his defensive play. He earned a rep as a two way player early because that’s what he was in college yet his defensive game was never that good. I feel those things took a significant jump in a positive way last year.

Yep, could not agree more with this assessment.

Is he great? No. But he appears to have found more consistency to his game and he has been one of the most important members of the team since around the 3rd round of the playoffs at least.

Every coach always has that one player. I’d argue Bednar is way less prone to that tendency than nearly all, if not all of his colleagues.

And really we’ve seen him try to give those minutes to other players this year, they didn't step up. His reliance on JTC can be maddening but it isn’t like it’s completely unfounded.

Here's a happy New Year info drop on a few folks I know the Avs are keeping tabs on: Jenner, Gavrikov, Sharanganovich, Comtois, Labanc, Verhaeghe, Frost. A lot of wingers, which is weird, but I'm just relaying what I've got

Interesting list, thanks. Lack of centers worries me...

Agree with all of that, just don't trust him. We know what he's capable of, we've known really.

I'd love to keep him if we could trust this is the player we're going to get. He'd be fine as the 3C/Swiss army knife if he did.

Which may actually make the whole thing worse. There is so little room for error when it comes to contracts.

Hopefully it auto merges these lol, but I do actually wonder if the goal will be to just add the best forward they can get as far as the TDL goes. Obviously the preference is a center, but any legit top six forward would help.

FTR I think he’s a goner this offseason. Chicago actually SHOULD sign him. He plays his best hockey close to home and they have the cap space to spare.

I think if the Avs offered Rodrigues like $2.5M but gave him 3 years he might take it if the cap does indeed stay put at $83.5M(I'm not convinced if this yet though) Not a big raise but real nice security for his family and his future from a guy who's career earnings are only $6.5M right now and I think would be $7.5M at seasons end.

That said, we really can't pay him any more than that and if some team seen enough from him with us this year that they want to give him 3-4M, we can't match it. Just like how Compher likely gets that or more.

As for that list of guys we are "supposedly" looking at... Unless the plan is to put Mikko or Gabe as Center full time which seems quite unlikely, they shouldn't spend a single asset on any player in the league that isn't a Center right now.

And hell even if they did decide to move Mikko to Center I would still say our assets should go towards a higher end 3C instead of a Top 6 winger.

My fear is they make him the long term 3C if his contract demands are reasonable.

Although I have no idea if keeping him is realistic. Most people have been building rosters without him and EJ for a while lol.

Drouin is a UFA, do you think Nate gives him a call to come here for a season? Pay cut obviously.

How about going after Pierre engvall next off-season?

He's falling into PTO territory at this point.

But he's someone I could definitely see the Avs signing to like a 1x800k deal in the summer.
I think I edited after your comment, what's your thoughts on Engvall? I like his size and numbers for a bottom 6. I'm wondering if we sign players who can play each forward position.

I'm also mainly stat watching for Engvall.

He's a fine bottom 6 guy but someone I suspect will be out of our price range.

There's a good chance ~5 of our bottom 6 forwards are making $1M or less starting next year. Maybe you get 1 3rd line winger for like 1.5M.
