They have two 3rd liners, JTC and Newhook, and as of right now one of them is going to play 2C.

So we'll have a 3rd liner as a 2C and two 4th liners on the 3rd line. And that's if everyone is healthy (which won't happen).

Right. Someone needs to step up.

Now, if we want to take a positive view of things, we could look at the 2nd line this way: the Avs really have 3 first line wings (Nuke, Rantanen, Landeskog), one of whom will be playing down on the 2nd line.

And yes, a 3rd line player will be playing up on that 2nd line also. Problem is, that's at 2C. But, there's still a balance there, to a certain extent.

But in any case, the Avs simply need someone at forward to crawl his way out of the depth chart, and become a legit NHL player, in a bottom 6 role. Whether that's Meyers, Kaut, Ranta, Sedlak - whomever. They need a player or two to do so.

Not all roster problems can be solved through FA signings.

When and whom do we offer PTOs to?

Gotta think there are some wingers unsigned that we could possible use on the 3rd line still. If Evan Rodriques or Sonny Milano remain unsigned gotta think I'd give them an opportunity to see what they have. Is there a chance we could sign Rodriques for 1 year and allow him to see if the market is more suitable for him next season? Would his camp entertain that? I just think he's too expensive to sign for multiple years on the third line.

Also, it's too bad Dallas has 10M in cap space, but Jason Robertson remaining unsigned may be something to consider watching. Also, what's the deal with Hayden Hodgson.

Philly is in cap hell and he's unsigned as well. Small sample size has anyone followed him and can offer more than what I get from 6 games on Natural Stat Trick?

Who else is out there that could reasonably well be signed or offered a PTO that could push LOC to the 4th line? I mean Kessel is out there but I just don't think he'd click with Bednar's system, but he's probably good for cheap points in the regular season but not what I would want in the playoffs.

Come on Rodrigues, just sign a 1 X 2M here.

The official NHL Twitter account posted that today (?)

He's a righty so you know Bednar would like him. Compher 2.0.

Interesting that Kessel, who is 8 games away from passing Yandle for the all-time consecutive games streak and 18 games against from hitting 1000 consecutive games, chose to sign with the franchise that's most known for boning over their players. Would be the most Vegas thing in the world to make him a healthy scratch on game 988 or something.

Give newhook 2C and top power play duty. Either he sticks and we solve our 2C issue or you pump his value by having him on the PP and trade him for a center.

Vegas thinks that Phil can come in and play with Eichel and Stone on the cheap eh. Bold strategy.

Sucks one of my favourite non-Avs plays now plays for that shit stain of a franchise.

Vegas is just throwing darts at a board. They’ve had some bad luck too but they deserve it! Am I right @TheRarestDangles ? Go Knights!

Not gonna fix not having a goalie. They should sign PK Subban, too.
P.K. Subban has Oilers PTO written all over him.

People are quick to forget all the Yakupovs and the Colbornes of this world.

That was a different era with the Avs. Before they were just trying to hit the jackpot with buy low former 1st rounders, without much thought involved. Now they put more thought into it, and use metrics and other means to find players whose strengths fit the way the Avs like to play.

This is the CMac factor IMO. He's great at identifying which second tier players, the guys who are so important for depth to championship teams, will fit in well with the Avs.

Saad, Burky, and Nuke are all testaments to that. People thought they sucked when they were added. Whether it's Saad's O zone puck possession, or Burky's zone entries, or Nuke's relentless forecheck. These are all traits that are a big part of what makes Bednar's system successful when it's played properly.

To an extent, JJ, Helm and Manson are examples too. People thought they were cooked because they played on bad teams. But their strengths fit this team like a glove so they had success. Even MacDermid is a decent example. Everyone thought he'd be one dimensional and useless, but he proved pretty useful in multiple ways, because he was better at the little things than people realized.

Hopefully Georgiev will be another example on the goaltending side. Jussi seems to see something he really likes in him.

How much of Newhooks drop in play the second half and playoffs can be attributed to the rookie wall? Or is/was there much more to it than that?

I'd like to say it was the rookie wall and he'll perform better next season. I didn't mind the up/down movement between the 2nd/3rd lines as he was trying to find his game and Bednar was trying to work the roster into proper form. What I didn't like was the complete disappearance leading to healthy scratches. I really hope his compete level intensifies and becomes sustainable.

The same goes for LOC. I mean he's the perfect 4th liner right now. But we've got him slotted in for the 3rd line due to depth issues at the moment. He's capable of that play, but hasn't shown the ability to keep his play elevated for prolonged times with the extra minutes. Is that something he can overcome this season?

Some questions around this team, but with the core we've got we should be able to weather pretty much any storm until Joe can make a trade or two as necessary, I suppose.

Hard to argue against the Kessel signing. A motivated Kessel could turn out to be a steal especially on just an one year deal. Still Vegas continues to feel like a team full misshapened toys. Will be interesting to see how Kessel gels in that locker room. Would not have hated if we got him for that contract. Only 250k more then Helm!

Starting to feel like the Avs will just sit on the extra cap space and weaponize it in the future. Could be a good thing as the season progresses and new names pop up on the trade market.

Newhook did pick it up just before the playoffs with 10pts in his last 14games in limited minutes.

As for LOC if he practiced his breakaways in the offseason he's going to score 30 goals!

Vegas went from intimidating to just sad so f***ing fast.

All those bullshit management decision finally caught up with them and it was a beauty to behold. Eichel's playoff hopes are so f***ing lucky Vegas is in the worst division in the NHL. Flames and Edmonton will take 1 & 2 seeds, Vegas will just need to beat out who... Seattle? Maybe Vancouver? Then they'll earn the right to get curb stomped by the #1 seed, probably Colorado (boy that will be fun).

Myself, I can not wait for Pietro to get hit by father time. That contract is going to turn into a boat anchor over night any day now.

Rookie wall + playing with other forwards who are offensive black holes. NAK and Sturm are no longer on the team, and you'll never hear an announcer gushing over JTC's passing and on-ice vision. "That was a brilliant pass by Compher to set up Newhook for a goal" is a statement that nobody will ever have to say.
