If there was no cap, especially a flat cap, there would be no Toews. It goes both ways.

True, but I think Bo fills in for him just fine and they bring in another good D.

Either way, I'm pretty confident that if there was no flat cap, Sakic was gonna build a super team. Remember they had a plan to add a Panarin type salary to this team on top of what they already had.

They wanted to take full advantage of Nate's cheap contract. Kadri's too, I think he still would have been brought in to center Panarin if Panarin agreed to sign.

Half a season later the pandemic hit and the flat cap was implemented.

The more I think about it, the more I like the Nichushkin and Lehknonen contracts.

I didn’t think they were that great at first, but I feel like with where they’re going to play in the lineup the Avs are going to get really good value.

Nichushkin is a top line forward at this point and that’s how the Avs played him in the playoffs. Lehkonen is going to play on the second line and did so in playoffs as well. I think there’s some questions about whether, or not Lehkonen can consistently be a 50 point guy, but as a second liner I think he’s got a good shot.

Honestly when you look at it, getting a 1st and 2nd liner for $10.6M is pretty good and the term of the contracts and eventual rise of the cap they probably look even better in a couple years.

If no Stastny or Rodriguez, I'd love to see if we can get Motte for cheap. Like a one year prove it deal. I think Motte would excel in our system with potential to play on the third line. For him he gets a chance at a cup, rack up points and get the long term contract next year.

Dont waste cap space on someone who cant play 2C.

Capspace should take priority of course, but adding another 3rd liner would allow Newhook or Compher to be trade bait for a 2C without having to get a 3rd line replacement in an additional move, so if you can sign someone cheap it would make sense. That way you also save assets at the TDL instead of having to add an extra forward too.

I love the two contracts. Besides the elusive 2C, our top 6 is set.

I’m still not terribly interested in Stastny.

- He’s had his chance to come back and gone elsewhere. So I’d rather not try to go there again.

- I don’t think he’s quick enough for this team now, he’s lost a step for sure.

- kind of with the last point, but I don’t think he’s good enough to be a 2C for the Avs nowadays.

IF they decide to bring him in I wouldn’t do more than a cheap, 1 year deal and it would be as a 3C with spot duty as 2C for key faceoffs. Give Newhook a chance to take the 2C spot now that he has a year and a cup run under his belt. If he shows he’s not ready/good enough then make a trade for a 2C by the deadline.

Stastny plays with his head and can play with fast players still... actually one of his strengths still left in his game. IMO he'd be better in the spot than Newhook or Compher... not that Stastny is a real solution for the playoffs.

The options of even passable standards are Stastny or that. I hope a trade for a 4-5+ year solution is in the works.
Yea gotta get a guy with term.

When Sakic traded Barron for Lehkonen, he said several times that he didn't want to trade him for a pending UFA. They obviously know that they are running out of assets, they need players that stay. I bet they intended to keep Manson from the start too.

I don't think you have to get a guy with term, but you have to figure out a plan to address the position. Manson is an example of getting a guy without term, but having a plan.

What’s the feeling on Dvorak?
Vanilla.

The only downside in bringing Stastny in is the cap space he's taking away from a legit 2C. But if he came in at around league min (1M + performance bonuses) i don't see how that's a terrible thing. He keeps us stable until the TD when we target a big fish and shifts down in the lineup.

I agree he can play with fast players. I think LOC and Newhook would be great wingers for him. leave Compher at 2C insulated with Lehks and Rants and run with a Meyer-Helm- Cogs 4th line? not so bad. Basically he could be looked at as a cheaper Compher replacement when we ship JTC out in the package that brings in a 2C at the deadline.
