I'm sure in most cases, they don't. However, in Kuemper's case, both Edmonton and Toronto will be bidding for him (maybe NJ too) so why not trade a pick to get the next 6 days for exclusive negotiating rights over everyone else?

Probably not, but the goalie market is pretty barren now with MAF off the table. A team desperate for goaltending might take a shot at signing him early for a low pick.
