I think if he really wanted, they could have done it. I mean no way Joe turns him down if Fleury calls him and tells him he can play for a couple of millions a year. Fleury was too expensive in the end IMO.

I don't know. Maybe they believe more in Georgiev's upside than Fleury at this point in his career.

They weren't technically allowed to talk to MAF yet right? Maybe they knew his asking price but Joe didn't wait to have a conversation with him.

Hmmm this is an interesting question. So you would keep an unsigned Nathan MacKinnon and risk losing him for NOTHING rather than trade him for a Kings Bounty???

I would trade his ass really, really fast if it came to that. Losing him for nothing would be a franchise crippler.
What if losing him for nothing made Makar realize he's actually the Avs best player and instead of being humble and sheepish he went full MacKinnon and became Orr?

My guess: Three years. Sakic is sick of losing players like Bura/Nuke/Grubauer after two-year contracts etc.

I think he will risk it here and offer George three years.

Actually, Gru was three years. Good deal.

Min. Three years, 3 or 4.
It'll be 2 or 3... my guess 3 and for a slightly lower number than Grubi.

You mean like what happened? :sarcasm:

It's not going to come to that because MacKinnon will sign long-term at some point within the next 7-10 days but if the agent made it clear they want to test UFA next summer, I'd trade him to the Islanders for a package that includes Barzal ++.

Going with a cheaper goalie creates so many more options, it's awesome.

Georgiev $3m x3
Lehkonen $4m x4
NAK $1.225m x1
Nichuskin $5.5m x6
J Johnson $750k

Those signings would leave just over $9m in capspace to use on a 2C and a bottom pair Dman, as per the roster below. Depending on what those two positions cost to fill you can potentially also afford an upgrade on NAK on the 3rd line.

Clearly Sakic is going to be a big player this week, either in UFA or trade.

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Nichuskin
Lehkonen - xxxxx - Rantanen
Newhook - Compher - NAK
Cogliano - Meyers - O'Connor
MacDermid, Sedlak

Toews - Makar
Byram - Girard
xxxxxx - EJ
JJ

Georgiev

If I'm Georgiev I want 2 years. That's when the Avs will have the strongest team and then I hit the UFA market with stellar numbers at age 28. $$$$$$$$

I want nothing to do with that 3rd year.

Another hypothetical lineup for the Avs that fits under the cap... Crazy? Yes. But theoretically doable? Also yes.

- Nuke 7x5.5M
- Lehky 4x4M
- Geogriev 2x2.75M
- Jack Johnson 1x800k
- Trocheck 6x5.75M
- Larsson 2x2.0M
- CDH 1x1.5M

- Trade Alex Newhook + 2023 1st to Chicago for Patrick Kane + Calvin De Haan UFA rights
- Trade Sam Girard to NYI for Scott Mayfield + 2023 1st & 3rd round picks

Nuke - Mack - Mikko
Landy - Trocheck - Kane
Lehky - Larsson - JTC
LOC - Meyers - Cogliano
Sedlak

Toews - Makar
Byram - Mayfield
CDH - Johnson
JMFJ - MacDermid

Georgiev
Francouz

About ~81.8M.

I'm sure that will be the crux of the negotiations 2 vs 3 years.

That would send a horrible message to the team.

Just because a player might want to wait to talk contract doesn't mean you automatically start shipping them out.

The chance to win one more cup is worth infinitely more than whatever the return could be.

True, but I assume Sakic had an idea if he would agree to this or not.. I doubt he trades for him if he signs for two years and we lose him again (potentially).

Joe wants to find at least a medium-term solution to the goaltending situation.

True, imagine if we would have traded away:

Kuemper, Kadri, Nuke, and Bura because they are free agents.

Can't do that hah.

I think MacK is a too big piece and his return would be too big to ignore though..

I think we would have to trade him, IMO. He is not a normal player. He can return an insane amount.

Even without MacK, we could be good, but it wouldn't be as easy.

Hilarious. I think they're going to get an answer on July 13th when he signs with the Flyers.

Terrible management by calgary... Can't believe some people still haven't learned ANYTHING from the Tavares situation.

If you're waiting ONE MONTH for an answer, isn't that an answer in itself?? Morons!

It's the SAME situation with Nathan MacKinnon. If next week, his agent says to the Avs that they want to wait until after next season to talk contract and they won't budge on that, YOU HAVE NO f***ING CHOICE, you have to trade him - as insane as that might sound.

Oh and I'll add that if this concept escapes you and you don't 'get it' then you probably shouldn't be a GM in the NHL. You put yourself in that situation, you cannot be surprised if the player decides to test UFA or just flat out leave.
That type of asset management makes sense but what type of package do you get for one year of MacKinnon?

Yup... Tampa could have blown the whole thing up and moved Stamkos when he wanted to test the waters. People screamed they should have traded him and that Tampa was making a terrible move. Instead, they bet on their org and their plan.

About ~81.8M.

Very optimistic numbers for Lehky and Nuke.

By far my favorite part about the Georgiev trade is just how much flexibility it gives the Avs now. The biggest concern about cap space for this summer was always around the idea of us having to go from paying out starting goalie $3.5M like we had last year with Kuemper and for 3 years prior with Grubauer... To now having to give Darcy 5.5M+ to stick around.

Now we're going to be paying our #1G likely even less then $3.5M which actually frees up a little space rather then losing $2M in space.

Gives the Avs some nice breathing room in terms of what they want to do with the 2nd line and the Defense. Having a potential wild card trade piece like Girard only amplifies the flexibility. Yeah they can rebuild the Middle 6 without having to use G, but if they do move G we still have 3 great Dmen and even more wiggle room with the cap.

Patrick Kane honestly makes too much sense. He's that perfect kind of piece that once again puts the forward group over the top, he can drive a 2nd line completely on his own. But perhaps most importantly is he's not a long term commitment add either. Just 1 year until he's a UFA so Joe can go all in again this year and then still have lots of space next summer to account for the Byram and Mackinnon pay jumps. If Kane wants out Joe needs to be on that.

If we get 2 years of starting goaltending for two 3rd picks and a 5th that's a real good deal.

Look at what we paid for rentals.

We don't have too many draft picks left and not too many prospects either, what can we send to Chicago for Kane? Of course, based on the CAT trade, maybe they don't need much.. Hah.
