In something of a rarity, Scott Wheeler was actually pretty positive about the performance of all 4 Rangers prospects (who actually played) at the World Juniors.
Brennan Othmann (F, New York Rangers): Gamer. Great in the gold medal game when the chips were down. Big hits. Drew a penalty. Assisted on the first goal. Had chances but they didn’t fall early. Then he played his best game of the tournament on New Year’s Eve against Sweden. Great hands on tips. Some creative plays at the goal line on the PP. Hasn’t been a banner year for him, per se, but you can see a scoring NHL winger with some snarl in there.
Jaroslav Chmelar (F, New York Rangers): Strong pushes. Always seems to be at the net or working the wall. Plays in the middle or retrieving on the wall at all times. Doesn’t like to hang out on the perimeter for long. Strong. Players bounce off of him. Give-and-gos. Worked the cycle. Played a heavy game down low really effectively. His line with Brabenec and Sztruc (a 2023-overager) was good in every game. Not hard to imagine him becoming a fourth-line forward.
Kalle Vaisanen (F, New York Rangers): A constant on this team at the last two tournaments. Just consistently effective in his role. He was good in pre-tournament, he was good when others weren’t while playing with two undrafted linemates in their tournament-opening loss to Switzerland (with a goal and a primary assists on both of the Finnish goals) and he was good the rest of the way. Goes to net. Strength.
Adam Sykora (F, New York Rangers): Injured in pre-tournament but played. Change of directions cutting past defenders (drew a couple of penalties that way). Great dexterity catching and finding pucks in his feet. Keeps his feet moving. Fearless with the puck. Wasn’t as productive in the tournament as his play warranted (just one goal in five games), but they kept using him a whole lot in all situations anyway because of his effort level and pedigree. Finished as their ice-time leader at forward (averaged 21:24) per game.
