Today is the renewal deadline for season tickets and the reminder email acknowledged that the franchise is going a different direction. I bring it up because it used the term re-tool and I can't remember if Army had used that specific word yet this year. Nothing about the content of the email surprised me and it is of course optimistic since it is a ticket renewal email. But I thought it was mildly interesting and figured I'd post it here:

The 2022-23 season has seen us fall short of our expectations and yours. It has required us to adjust, make some tough decisions and take a new direction – one, thankfully, that is unfamiliar in recent memory. The St. Louis Blues have made the postseason in 10 of our last 12 seasons. We’ve posted five of our top six regular-season records under the leadership of General Manager Doug Armstrong, played the sixth most playoff games of any franchise since 2012, and of course, captured the 2019 Stanley Cup. And during that stretch, you have been the most important piece of our core. Night in and night out, you have packed Enterprise Center and your unrelenting passion has created the best home-ice advantage in the NHL.

Now, we want you by our side as we carve a new path and shape the future of Blues hockey. Today is the dawn of a new decade and under Armstrong’s guidance, the process of re-tooling our roster is underway. We have welcomed new faces to accompany a strong group of veteran leaders and some of the most impactful young players in the league. We have also added to an exciting pool of prospects and acquired a stock of valuable assets, providing flexibility for the 2023 off-season.

This is an exciting time for our franchise, so join us on the journey as we position ourselves for another decade of success.

Did they offer you a COLA decrease?

I believe Army has used the term retool to describe what we are going through. He has shied away from rebuild.

That D is a dumpster fire, they can use whatever words they want. Dog shit would be the one I'd use.

I wouldn't give them a penny, especially in this economy. Much better things to spend your money on than padding Kyrou's bank account as he goes for another -50 +- season. The team was not even remotely likeable this season anyways and they will likely do nothing major to fix things as far as 2023-24 is concerned.

Last night was one of the few games that was actually entertaining for 2/3 periods and must see hockey. Can't say that for practically every other game this season. Shame the refs ruined the show.

I stil believe that the players are fine but the system is what is so shit. If we have to fire all of the coaches to get it fixed then so be it.

Not surprised. Hartman lucky his visor took most of the blow. A blocker straight to the face could do some serious damage.

Disagree on it hurting our tank though. Greiss is not good.

Maybe Hofer gets in some though?
They're both pretty f***ing terrible.
yes...Binny makes some big saves, and typically allows fewer 'weak' goals than many of the goalies the Blues have employed in the past 30 years, and he's a workhorse, and blah, blah, blah. He's as much the problem as anyone else on this team. Sure, his defense makes him look helpless at times, but it's not always on the defense when everyone in the arena can see the back door open and Binner not anticipating. Greiss gives up fewer of those it seems, possibly because he's more often in position to keep from being dunked on. But CUP, so whatever.

No doubt Hofer gets at least one of those games. Likely against Washington on Friday.

Sorry but posting stats of our goalies is worthless. Everyone that has watched knows they have both been far better than the stats show.

I hope we give him at least one of the games. It's a perfect scenario to get him an NHL game in a year we're not fighting for playoffs.
My concern would be that the team actually shows up for him.
We're getting into the final leg of the season. We can't afford any kind of momentum right now. We need to get that Draft pick into the #5-7 range.

74th and 92nd in goals saved above expected. There's no way to spin the goaltending as a strength.
I have a very, very, very difficult time believing that Binner has played behind better defense than Vasilevski and only slightly worse than Sorokin. I've got a lot of time for xG models, but MoneyPuck's doesn't account for pre-shot passing at all.

The East-West variables it uses to impact the model is based on the last event (takeaway, hit, faceoff, etc) and doesn't really have a means of describing a back door tap in as a very high danger play if it comes after a sustained period of 5 on 5 zone time. Sustained zone time without a tangible event decreases the expected goal value and unless it is a rebound, the lateral movement directly pre-shot isn't factored in. Which means that a team spending 15 seconds moving around the perimeter, drawing the D out of position and then making a cross-ice pass for a back door tap in isn't viewed any differently than if a guy walks out of the corner and takes a bad angle shot on a goalie that is squarely set up in his RVH.

Over large samples, this generally evens out pretty well because most teams don't allow back door tap ins over and over and over when they are in their established in-zone D setup. Unfortunately, that type of play is far and away the biggest weakness in our defensive structure. The A+++ chances that our D seems most prone to allowing aren't classified as all that dangerous by MoneyPuck's (and all public xG models I know of) model.

I don't think Binner has been an all star this year and he's had too many blow up games. But basically every time I compare my eye test of a game against xGA numbers for that game, I come away thinking that the model isn't capturing the back door tap ins accurately.
