uhhhhh why did we claim Kapanen?

Well, we do need players to fill the roster... With losing Tarasenko, O'Reilly and Acciari were down three forwards.
Kapanen didn't fit the Penguins system. He has a 3.2 million AAV so that's okay for a third liner albeit a bit high for his production. Army probably thinks we can get something more out of him. As I said yesterday on this forum: If he fails: his contract ends after next season, if he's decent: we can possibly trade him at next years trade deadline for a free pick and this gives us the option to let Snuggerug develop another year in the NCAA while we have a warm body for the main team that can move up in the line up in case of injury's.

I have a feeling I'm the only one, but I like this move. We have enough capspace anyway, so might as well use it on a reclamation project.

Honestly, just toss him on a line with Thomas, and hope for the best. He's someone that needs to be on an offensive line, and we certainly have spots for that now. Next season is a transition season, so it's sort of insurance if Snuggerud and Bolduc aren't ready. This should probably ease some of the nerves that people have that Army will ship a ton of assets out for expensive guys like Meier.

Like I said yesterday, I'd have some interest in Kapanen, but it would depend on Army's plan. If Army really wanted to use that cap on a Meier, then it wouldn't make sense, if he didn't, then it absolutely makes sense. Definitely would've like Tolvanen earlier in the year, but oh well.

I don’t like it.

He’ll make $3.2M next year. He’s not worth that and the Blues still have a cap crunch.

He’s a floater PIT finally got sick of and jettisoned him. I’m sure Chief will love this guy…

Only thing I’m looking forward to is if he somehow plays against PIT in an hour as that would be funny. But that little kick lasts a few minutes and then we’re stuck with another floater for $3.2M next season…

It’s likely also a setup for another deal (probably Barbs) but there’s better ways to do that than to add Kapanen at $3.2M IMO.

Came across some pretty insane combination stats. It appears that Kyrou and the Krug + Faulk pairing are like oil and water. Check out these splits:

The majority of their minutes they have pretty average results, but in those ~160 minutes together it's an absolute disaster.

So that's what happen when you combine a forward that doesn't play defense with a defensive pair that can't play defense.
uhhhhh why did we claim Kapanen?
Why not?

Oh yay, just what we need right now.
I remember reading that while not physical, his speed helps him to be okay defensively. I hope this is the case.
He's well over 1 hit per game the past 2 seasons, so it's not that he's not physical either.

I think an under-rated aspect of claiming Kapanen, is showing the team that we are going to add NHL talent and not just tank, and that we shouldn't really want to have young guys up right now while the team is falling apart. We just sent Alexandrov down, which is probably a good thing for him. He's not going to develop in this environment, so let him have a good final stretch with Springfield and then hopefully another playoff run.

And every once in a while, you get a waiver claim that just works, like Florida with Forsling.

Kapanen isn't as bad as his reputation would suggest. It's just hard to know what to do with him in a lineup.

He has got great speed, but he's a bit timid, so he will maddingly never drive wide to the net and push back defenders even when he has a step on someone, and just pull up at the hash marks to wait for help. He has a pretty good shot, but doesn't play well without the puck, so only really gets chances when he creates them himself. Doesn't really have much awareness to be on either the PP or the PK, despite being used on both in the past.

He has tools and isn't particularly lazy, but just doesn't fit well with others. I wouldn't be surprised if a change of scenery did a lot of good for him, as Sullivan clearly had lost confidence in him and he wasn't getting many quality minutes with capable players (played mostly with McGinn and Carter's lifeless body).

Not sure of STL's cap situation, but if they have flexibility, then i don't think he's a bad guy to take a flyer on, even with an extra year.

I guess I don’t hate it. He has some skill and can play physical too, so he’s a decent middle 6 player.

My main concern is I don’t think Armstrong and the Blues really know what to do with this roster. It’s clear that our team defense is a major problem, and that means not just the defensemen. It’s everyone, the forwards don’t do enough either. It seems like we need to be actively adding players that are good in their own zone. A move like this goes against that. So again, I have no idea what type of identity to expect moving forward or if we will just never have one again.

The Blues don’t really have much cap flexibility though…

…unless some other move is made that moves out a high dollar guy like Krug, Parayko, Schenn etc.
