Why are we trying out Buchnevich at center? In case we get an offer for O"Reilly we like and we want to see if he can fill O'Reilly's skates?

Actually, in all likely hood yes. But I am not sure why Barbashev isn't being use.. Or Schenn.... But Oh well.

I don't think we really are, it was really just 1 game with him taking faceoffs. Part of the explanation was the team wanting multiple players on each line capable of taking faceoffs, but that also doesn't really make sense as I can think of multiple prominent lines recently that hasn't had that.

To me, I think it's more of an opportunity to see if something works because you don't know if it will until you try it. I'm sure part of it is due to long-term uncertainty with ROR and Barbashev, but I doubt it's something like Army instructing Berube to start finding more internal centers because guys like O'Reilly and Barbashev won't be here much longer.

It may have some to do with the unknown future of ROR but I don't think it's that entirely. Buchnevich was originally drafted as a center so seeing what he can offer us in a versatile role is a good thing whether ROR is here or not.

I think he is being tried because ROR is going to be traded at the TDL. He is not going to resigned here and will be someone that one of the top teams will want to take on a significant defensive assignment in the playoffs. I have no doubt that he will bring a #1 and a good young player. Teams who really believe they have a real chance for a cup will value ROR. A veteran who has played well in the playoffs and takes on some of the tough assignments.

If Kyrou can put together a full year of what he did in the past 22 games (29 points 22 games) he'd be over a 100 point per season player.

No ownership group can realistically expect to never go through a full rebuild. I'm not saying that's what the Blues should do now but, eventually, all organizations have to face that reality. I also think that this market has much more resilient support for the Blues after the cup win. Of course it would hurt the bottom line, but 2-4 years of being a lottory team wouldn't cause the Blues to be forgotton locally. Remember, the rock bottom fan engagement that the Blues experienced after the full season lockout wasn't just do to them sucking. It was also right after the league cancelled a season and with an ownership group that was trading away any players with any name recognition so they could more easily sell the team. That was a worst case scenerio that I dont think I'll ever see again in my life, knock on wood. Not having an NFL team now helps too (I like soccer a lot, but an MLS team won't suck up the local coverage like the Rams did, unworthy of it as they were).

I think that if ownership would just be transparent with the fans at the start of a rebuild, like the Rangers were a few season ago with their letter to season ticket holders, then the fans would stick with the team through it. Again, I support trading the UFAs for futures for now rather than committing to a full rebuild, but the day will come when a full rebuild is the best answer.

Players like him are always going to have some dry spells through an 82 game season. Maybe not quite as dry as his first few weeks this year, but he's very unlikely to go 82 games on the type of hot streak he's been on over the last 22 games. I'm not expecting 108 point seasons out of him like he's paced at for the last 22 games, but I think it is reasonable to think 90+ will be his normal pace through the first half of that contract.

He's on pace for 84 points this year after that disastrous start and has a real chance of still getting to 90 points this year (although he needs to get back into the lineup ASAP to do so). I wouldn't bet on it, but I'd feel decent about a bet that he plays at a 90 point pace.

Someone on the trade boards asked for more detail on why ROR was a -26. So I broke it down for him. I found it funny that 3 things added up exactly to -26. In case you missed it:

-11 - Playing with Tory Krug 5v5. They have a 8% GF%. ROR is always out against the other team's top line. If Krug is too, its a minus
-8 - Playing with Jordan Kyrou 5v5. That experiment did not work.
-7 - Empty net goal differential. Stop pulling the goalie with 5 minutes left Craig.

-11 - 8 -7 = -26

Yeah, his underlying numbers are still pretty good. They aren't to his prime level, but that of a still really good defensive 2nd line center. With potential slightly more offensive deployment and with actual top 6 wingers, I could easily see him back to what he was before. He also has a PDO of 91.6, with an on-ice sv% of 82.7%. Those numbers will rebound, might not rebound this year, but all indications are his poor play this season isn't due to a true decline in ability.

Interesting. I wonder if that means anything in terms of JT or Timmerman leaving or being reassigned.

Never heard of this guy but it’ll be hard for him to ask more uninformed questions than JT.
I think Timmerman will be focusing more on St. Louis City SC now that they are about to begin play, and maybe Thomas becomes more of a columnist as opposed to a beat writer.

Korac has been the NHL.com Blues guy from as long as I can remember.

Yea. That was my bad. I was trying to remember who was with the STL Post before the new guy. I totally blanked on Timmerman because I never think about him. I don't live in StL so I don't get the paper. Korac was the only other beat writer besides Rutherford I could think of and assumed in the moment.

Korac is with Sports Illustrated now as well. So he got an extra national outlet.

Worth noting that ROR/Krug/Kyrou were all on the ice together for 6 goals against (and zero goals for) at 5 on 5. So just adding the -11 with Krug and the -8 with Kyrou double counts 6 goals against.

At 5 on 5 he's -6 while playing with both Kyrou/Krug, -2 with Kyrou but no Krug, and -5 with Krug but no Kyrou for a -13 overall when he shares ice with at least one of them at 5 on 5. Add in the -7 from playing with an empty net and you get up to 20. That leaves him still at a -6 when you eliminate all of the most unfavorable partners and situations.

Not for nothing, but I do think he bears some blame for that -7 with an empty net. We have been by far the worst team in the league with the goalie pulled. Our 37.99 goals against per 60 with the goalie pulled is dead last by a mile (31st is 27 goals against per 60). Our GF% with the goalie pulled is tied for last. We have allowed the most total empty net goals against. Yet we sit right in the middle of the pack in the amount of time we've had the goalie pulled (18th in the league). Incredibly, we have only played 2:40 with an empty net when trailing by 1 goal. That is the 2nd least time in the entire league. The issue is that we are often down 2 goals in the 3rd. And when we are trailing by just 1, we almost always give the puck away and get scored on immediately after pulling the goalie. Berube needs to adjust his goalie pull timing to adapt to our awful 6 on 5 play, but the players bear a ton of responsibility for how poorly they play with the goalie pulled. They haven't been anything approaching NHL-caliber and ROR is part of that.

ROR is one of just 13 NHL forwards who have been on the ice for 9+ goals with an empty net even though 124 forwards have played more minutes with an empty net than he has. His 53 goals against per 60 with the goalie pulled is the worst among the 177 forwards who have played 6+ minutes with an empty net this year. He's 170th or worst in all of corsi, fenwick, shots, and xGF% with an empty net. He (along with the entire team) has been truly atrocious in the 10 minutes he's been out there with the goalie pulled and that -7 shouldn't get fully chalked up to Berube pulling the goalie too early. There are 76 forwards in the NHL who have played 10+ minutes with an empty net but have been on the ice for 5 or fewer empty net goals against. ROR (and the rest of the Blues) shouldn't get a pass for how often we get scored on with the goalie pulled.

Always the lawyer, ruining the fun :sarcasm: Yea, I figured there would be overlap with Krug and Kyrou. I actually initially wrote that as a caveat in my trade board post, but erased it. Its more fun to think it was just those three things since the math added up.

As for the empty net, in my longer trade board post, I did acknowledge ROR shared some of the blame. He actually shares some of the blame in all situations. I wasn't trying to absolve him, just give some context. He is the 2nd best GF% on the team with an empty net. He is just out there for most if not all of the empty net goals going both ways. I think others are more at fault. I don't recall him having a bad turnover with the net empty but remember several others doing so.

For the retool/rebuild can we get some of the luck the rangers have been getting the past few years. I mean moving up 4 spots to draft second, then moving up 12 spots to draft first. Having an elite winger only want to play in your city and having a Norris defensemen force a trade to your city. I think we could use some of that sauce

Rosen is elite

There’s our #1LHD, boys!

:naughty::thumbu:

Would be kinda funny in a Binnington-sorta way, to stumble into a starter that quietly developed in the minors and just kept waiting for a chance; then grabs the job and never let’s go. Would that be a credit to Army and the development team, or a sign that they can’t spot talent until it slaps them in the head? I’d tend to think the former, but I’m sure we’d hear the opposite too; especially if Rosen really can be a full-time, 20+ minute per night top-4 D. Though, that remains to be seen, and he may ultimately become nothing more than a part-time guy in St. Louis. Long-term, there are a whole lot of guys ahead of him…
