imagine thomas and tkachuk on the same line, think we would be getting owned 5on5? that line would have skill, size, youth and grit.

and TBH the main knock on tkachuk was the same as Keith, takes stupid penalties. well from what ive seen between kyrou, schenn and mikkola we seem to love those type of players anyways. really is a shame we couldnt trade kyrou and scandella for tkachuk

Yes, I think we would be getting killed at 5 on 5 if we gave up one of ROR/Tarasenko, Faulk and whatever other roster piece would be needed to bridge the value gap between ROR/Tarasenko and Huberdeau in order to win the bidding war.

It's also a shame that we couldn't trade Kyrou and Scandella for McDavid. That's another unrealistic deal that would improve the team. Your hatred of Kyrou is hilariously inconsistent with any notion that he could have been the centerpiece in a trade for a player who returned a 115 point player, top pair D man AND a 1st round pick.

Especially since Calgary was able to extend both Huberdeau and Weegar, I don't know how many other teams could've put a package together to get Tkachuk. Sure, they didn't come with extensions, but they probably had a pretty good feeling they could get a deal done, some sort of indication from an agent that they'd at least be open to it.

Why does Leivo get so much hate? He is a fill in player. Yet he had as many individual 5v5 scoring chances as Golden Boy Jake Neighbours in half as many games, with half as good of linemates and with 3 minutes less TOI a game. He was fine for his role. Im not sure what people expect from a 13th forward in 3 games at 9 minutes a game. But 5 scoring chances, 2 HD ones, and nearly break even xGf% of 49.6% seems fine for the role.

Yeah it’s almost like Neighbours is 20 years old and has a lot more potential (and can fill other roles as well) and Leivo is a veteran who is what he is. That’s why he has bounced around the league and gets relegated to the AHL every time he joins a new team. He doesn’t check, doesn’t play D, doesn’t do anything to help. Not sure what you’re going for here with this comparison. Leivo doesn’t fit at all the way we should want to play.

Leivo creates scoring chances at a pretty decent clip for a 2-way contract. He has 5 individual and 2 individual High Danger chances in less than 30 minutes of ice time.

"He doesn't play defense", What does that even mean? Does he just stop at the red line? "sorry guys can't cross here". No. His defense is fine. He plays D, he just isn't a ++ level defender. What do you expect for $750k. 12 Blues are worse than him in GA/60. He has only 1 GA, and that wasn't his fault at all. He was covering his man on the point when Leddy and Parayko left Schiefele absolutely wide open in front of the net. You can't even argue that it was his job to collapse and cover the net, as that should have been the C.

Neighbours is getting a shit ton of praise. Sure he's 20 but he needs to be in the AHL. He isn't doing shit well. He isn't creating scoring chances at near the rate of a $750k replacement level player. He isn't defending as well either as his GA/60 is worse. He is killing possession because he can not cradle a pass. Any mildly hard pass will bounce off his stick and be lost. He is hitting almost exactly as much as Leivo (7.04 vs 6.95 Hits/60), but is getting hit a lot more. He's not blocking shots at near the rate Leivo is. He isn't drawing penalties like Leivo has.

Why do so many guys get a pass but people just harp on Leivo and Kyrou? I get Kyrou to some extent. He just signed a big contract. But Leivo? Who gives a f*** if he is sent down? Yet you re thanking god he get sent down as opposed to just getting benched or continuing to play fine in a small role. I don't get it. He has been more than fine for what his role is.

I’m glad you put so much value into advanced stats over a 4 game sample size, Mrs. Leivo. But your husband is not good at hockey. He gets caved in when he’s on the ice and has the worst possession stats on the team, btw. Gets outshot badly and provides nothing offensively. Won’t be able to fill a defensive role or kill penalties so there’s no use in having him on the team. If we want a lackluster offensive depth player who is useless, Logan Brown is filling that role just fine.

Next, I don’t know why are you ranting about Neighbours. I never even brought him up. In fact I made a post the other day on here where I said I question whether he should be in the NHL. So they can send him down too, I really don’t care.

Regardless of your hate boner for Neighbours, that’s irrelevant to the point I’m making that Leivo sucks. So yes, I am happy about it.

Is that supposed to be an insult? I do not know Mrs. Leivo, or even if there is a Mrs. Leivo, but I am sure she is a lovely person. I take the comparison as a compliment. Although I would hope Leivo's wife would be more complimentary than saying he is an adequate extra forward. Talk about damning with faint praise if that is the best your wife will say about you.

You randomly drop to your knees and thank the heavens that Leivo got sent down, but i have the hate boner? lol Seriously? I brought up Neighbours because he is someone a lot of people have praised. I was not singling you out specifically in my first post. Your post was merely emblematic of a general board position to single out Leivo and Kyrou as two of the worst players in our slump. Neighbours is an example of a guy playing poorly who gets a pass due to his age. So I compared the two.

Yes, I am vocal about not liking Neighbours game. But it was reasonable to compare a player who remains with the team when discussing a player who was sent down. Randomly shouting out "Oh thank goodness we sent our 14th forward to the AHL" seems more like a hate boner. We knew Leivo would likely be sent down after Buchnevich was reactivated. I could see being happy Buch was back, but I just don't understand specifically caring if Leivo was sent down. He's not worth caring about (again, not a nice thing for me to say if I am his wife).

If there’s a time that it’s beneficial for the Blues to be sellers at the TDL this is certainly the year.

Tarasenko and ROR should bring back a 1st each. Stock the prospect pool in a deep draft I guess.

There’s still a lot of hockey season left and every season has ups and downs but I wasn’t too optimistic about this year.

Ryan O'Reilly is going to cost himself a ton of money if he doesn't turn things around ASAP. 1 goal, 0 assists, and a -10 through 7 games is just about the worst start to a contract year you can have.

He's already in a spot where he has to go +21 over the next 75 games in order to match his +11 from last season. That is doable for a player like him, but he has dug quite the hole for himself. Prior to this season, his worst +/- over any 7 game stretch was -5 (which occurred exactly twice).

He's only had one other 7 game stretch as a Blue where he's been held to just 1 point. That stretch was bookended by 4 point nights.

Like most things surrounding this team, I'm not ready to hit the panic button on ROR. We're not even 10% of the way into the season and he's adjusting to new line mates (his longest term line mate is off the team and then Saad got hurt quickly). He is an outstanding player and I have a good degree of confidence that he will turn things around.

But it has been a horrendously bad start for him and he needs to turn it around immediately. Both for the team's chances this season and for his next contract. Another couple weeks like this will cost him millions of dollars.

ROR absolutely losing money by the day. At this point have to hope it's an anomaly, he returns to being ROR, but his AAV on his next deal is going downnnnn at the moment.

I kinda feel bad for ROR. There’s no doubt he cares a ton and there’s been multiple articles about how hard he is on himself. I’m sure he’s clutching his stick tighter and putting that pressure on himself even more since it is a contract year. At the same time, I obviously hope this will help us retain him on a more team friendly deal.

That said, +/- isn’t a good metric to use to determine his next contract. Nobody will care if he finishes +12 or +3. That is irrelevant. Teams will look at his offensive production and he will only be costing himself money if he finishes below 60 points.

I like the way LA is playing in the offensive zone. Hard on pucks, using their bodies and strength to get positioning without spending the majority of their time grinding in the corners. Would like to see the Blues play more like that. Don't have to hit to be physical.

+/- is far from a perfect stat and I agree that by itself it won't cost him any money. However, a big chunk of his value is in his defensive play. He's been a consistent Selke candidate and that drives a decent chunk of his value. 65-70 point ROR who is a minus player (or single digit positive) isn't going to get many Selke votes and is going to be looked at like a 2C in the free agent marketplace.

Production is the biggest driver of value, but his reputation as an elite defensive center and that will take a hit if he's on the ice for way more goals against than usual.

You make good points. ROR will need to find his A-game to really cash in on his next contract, but there are a few ways to look at it. Perhaps a mediocre season would make the chances of us re-signing him higher. On the other hand, would we even want to bring him back in that case?

I had always assumed that Tarasenko was as good as gone and that we would focus our efforts on re-signing ROR, but right now Tarasenko looks as good as ever while ROR surely doesn't. I would definitely be willing to re-focus our attention on Vladi if he continues to look this good all season. ROR seems like he always starts off slow, so I bet he will be fine by season's end but it doesn't seem to be as easy of a decision as it seemed like before the season. That is of course assuming Vladi is even open to re-signing here.

I wouldn't hate watching ROR walk as a UFA or traded at the deadline to a team like Ottawa. It sucks to lose talent for nothing, but a long-term $6.5M/yr+ deal to ROR scares me more than the Schenn deal, and everybody already craps on the Schenn deal. Then you factor in the long-term horror-show on the back-end, HTH does Army justify bring back 90 and/or 91 if this season goes off the rails. The upcoming schedule isn't exactly a picnic; it's not unthinkable that the Blues could be a few more games below .500 by the time mid-December rolls around.

The league's young cores are making the Blues' look old.

I'm ready to separate Kyrou and ROR, but idk who we can put there to fill in. Kyrou is a rush player and ROR is a control down low guy. We could put Barbashev-Schenn-Kyrou together again and hope Schenn and Barbashev figure it out, but that just leaves ROR on an island. I don't think we have any other particularly effective players that can drive the play with ROR like Perron could. Saad can convert when he's back, but he's not great at creating opportunities.
