I know +/- isn't a great site, but Leddy at +2 is pretty incredible, especially for the role he plays, and is a mark to how underrated he is. Many don't think much of him, but he's a solid top 4 guy that is versatile enough for a few different roles.

He's a lot better player than I thought he was before we traded for him. I never thought I'd be a LeddHead but here we are.

The optimist in me sees the team not that far off from being a competitive team again. We won't be this bad with the empty net again, it's kind of the opposite of last season with how good the offense was. That's a big chunk of the goals against and bad +/-. Over his past 24 games, Krug is a -2, although in that stretch he's averaging just 17 minutes and 10 points. He's hurting us less, but we are also very much sheltering him, and that's terrible value for his contract, but less bad is still less bad. A couple moves over the summer to reinforce the center position with someone that can win faceoffs, maybe a defensive setup adjustment, coaching adjustments, and we might be in pretty solid shape.

To me, Buchnevich has proven to be a big time player, and Thomas is right behind him. Guys like Saad and Leddy have proven to be solid cogs in a machine. Kap/Blais/Vrana have been solid for what they are. Faulk/Parayko/Schenn/Kyrou have had strong finishes, and them being more consistent next year will be key.

Kessel sent down, Samorukov recalled
Will be nice to see him play in a few games too. Kessel met my expectations, and I had pretty solid expectations for him.

Until goal and defense are fixed, Blues are a long way away.

Binnington and Krug contracts are killers.

Since the trade deadline; the Blues are 9-6-2 while averaging 3.88 gf/g and 3.82 ga/g.
That would project to a 43-29-10 record, or 96 points.

I get that the goals against number isn't good(and for a St. Louis team it's completely unacceptable); but in truth we really aren't that far away from the Wild Card teams as currently constructed. And we've been doing this while down at least one top 9 forward for the majority of this stretch(2 of them on several nights).

It really wouldn't take all that much to put us back in the mix for the Division(you're talking a 10 point spread). And if we're in the mix for the Division, we'd have to be considered "in the mix" for taking the West and ultimately the Cup.

This may not be anything close to resembling "Blues hockey", and I'll even agree that I do not like how we're constructed in terms of potential matchup scenario's; but this lineup absolutely has the firepower to blow opponents off the ice.
With even minor tweaks we should easily make the PO's next year. If we can really find a way to upgrade; we could be back to challenging for the Division.

Seems like they’re trying to reward a handful of guys on a job well done before the season is done. Get them into a couple NHL games to show they haven’t forgotten about them, recognize their good AHL play, get them out of a couple bus rides and get them a few days worth of a pro-rated NHL salary.

Hopefully Samorukov doesn’t have PTSD when he sees Kyrou in the locker room.

Everyone is just trying to out virtue signal each other these days. It's getting way out of hand.
So much this. Way too many people are caught up in trying to out-cool the other and engaging in suffering contests. It is fake and the exact opposite of compassion.

But this is how large groups of people are defeated. Divide and conquer. Get each other disagreeing and fighting. This fragments collective timelines so much so that collective consciousnesses are becoming smaller and smaller and more easily defeated.

Don't let the carriage turn into a pumpkin.

I'm not convinced that the goaltending is in need of 'fixing.' My eyes tell me that Binner has been better than his numbers suggest by a healthy margin. He hasn't played like you want/need a $6M goalie to play like, but I wouldn't describe him as bad. I've hated both contracts we've given him since the Cup win and will continnue to do so. I also don't like a lot of antics when he's getting blown up on the scoreboard. But I haven't disliked his play most of the year. We've seen him elevate his game for decent stretches multiple times in the last 12 months and I'm confident that the ability is still there.

Lateral movement has always been one of his weaknesses and our current defensive woes have greatly increased the number of times he's having to try to make lateral saves. He's at his best as a 'get square and make the first save' goaltender who can play on top of his crease and attack the puck carrier. Our D hasn't allowed him to play that game and has let him get burned on the back door when he tries. Allowing him to play that style should help.

I think there is a reasonable argument that he can be good enough over the course of a full season next year if we can return to taking away the back door and manage his workload better. Hofer appears capable of providing more quality starts than Greiss did, so I'm not convince that there is anything that needs to be 'done' to fix the goaltending. We're not buying him out, he's not getting traded, and Hofer will be the backup next year. This is the tandem we are running and I think it is reasonable to believe they are capable of being good enough if the D gets fixed. It could absolutely go the other way too. No one should be betting a large sum of money on our team SV% next year.

The D is in clear need of fixing, but I'm still not sure whether the structure or composition is the greater issue. I think both of them are issues that should be addressed, but I'm not confident which is the larger cause of the struggles. I think we should be actively shopping to swap one of Krug/Leddy out with a legit shut down or all situations top 4 D man (preferably Krug, but it might have to be Leddy out of necessity). I also think that we should bring in a new D coach and completely change the system.

I really hope the Rags re-sign Tarasenko for notable money and cash-strap themselves. Maybe then we could see the Isles-Toews situation play out and the Rags be forced to trade us Miller for something extremely reasonable.

Otherwise, is KAM eligible to receive an offer-sheet?

Plus you have to think that guys like Neighbours, Toropchenko, Alexandrov, Tucker, Kessel, and Hofer should only improve in the NHL from here on out.

We are all the sudden starting to get younger pretty quickly. We don’t really have many vets that are projected to be on the team next season that should fall off a cliff next year. Maybe Bortuzzo but he doesn’t really count, as he can be easily replaced.

We have lots of reasons to be optimistic. But that optimism will die fast IF Van Ryn and MacTavish are still here. Once they are gone, then I’ll be excited.

Parayko, Leddy and Faulk in the top 4 alone should really make for a better defense than what we’ve seen so far this season. There are other teams doing better than us who don’t have any better of a top 4 than we do. I truly hope a new defensive coach can at least make this group average.

Thought samurokov looked pretty good tonight. Played nice simple heavy game.
That’s good. I didn’t see the game and didn’t see a single comment about him in the GDT or on social media as I quickly browsed.

Which is fine since that is usually a good sign for a d-man.

You're more optimistic about Schenn than I am. 32. Physical player. I'd be very pleasantly surprised if we don't see a dramatic decline in his play over the next year or 2.
