I think the last to do it at the start was Hull. If you pick midseason, Matthews pulled a 51 in 50 last season.


I think there are a few reasons that all kinda add up. Expansion, switch from 3rd and 4th line plugs, a generation of goalies gone, coaching changes, equipment changes, reffing has tightened up... but if we have seen anything, over time we will see a sway back towards defensive hockey. One team will figure it out and all will copy in time. Plus, with how wildly needed good goaltending is, a new generation of elite goalies will be developed... basically starting today where their impact is 8-12 years away.

Not sure what that is, but it probably involves sex drugs and alcohol.

If you're talking purely on the ice... Vrana isn't overpaid. He hasn't played many games, so the sample is small... with the Wings, 32 points in 39 games. He's a 2 time 20 goal scorer and nearly did it in 20-21 in 50 games. He's a good 2nd line player. His pacing is roughly equal to a 55 point guy over a full season. That is easily worth 5.25m.

His off the ice issues are more of the concern and with maybe 10 teams that can fit him with LTIR and maybe 3-4 that can fit him without... I don't think he gets claimed. If he can stay on the ice, he's a worthwhile 2nd liner.

If I was the Avs, I'd think long and hard about it. He can replace what Burkie brought.

I've honestly been getting more enjoyment out of watching Buffalo games then Avs games this year. They remind me of the Avs back in like 2018 when all our young guys were just starting to break out.

It's eerily reminiscent, especially with the way Thompson broke out once Eichel was off the team. Tage is carrying that team on his back and helping everyone else find their groove.
