2022-2023 Around The League

It feels like dude just decided to go full shitheel this year. I can’t imagine being his teammate.

I still believe it was more for cap reasons but I can’t help but wonder if Tampa was motivated by more than that when they dumped Miller in 2019 and then proceeded to win back-to-back Stanley Cups.

Jonathan Tanner Miller. Even his name sounds douchey.

He's crazy talented, but coachability and attitude were always a major issue. One of the very few players that I would have liked to seen rushed immediately to the NHL. He could have been with what was then a great locker room and gotten the strongest coaching possible.

Personally, I think Merkley would flourish here in this system with this coaching. Not what the Avs really need though. Minny would be another great system for him.

Idk. With Byrams injuries, Girards struggles and the looming cap crunch I feel like Merkley could be a nice risk for the Avs.

I will say that Quinn is probably the absolutely worst possible coach for him, as that guy just does not know how to handle young talent in the NHL, which is strange considering where he came from. The timing is just really bad.

I dunno, I think the kid has already got all kinds of red flags but if they want to take on one of the Avs' failing prospects as a reclamation project I say, why not? But if they actually want something of good value, f*** the hell off.

But can he 2C ?

Not really.

I think there’s zero chance Vrana gets claimed. NHL executives do their homework.

I wish him the best but he’s a slightly overpaid as it is. Maybe somebody claims him in the hope that he performs well and they can use him as a trade asset with retention but I’d bet no teams are really interested in adding him at his full salary as part of the solution to their current team.

No, but he could be a nice addition at LW, force Rod to 2C, push JTC down to 3C until Landy and Nuke get back , and send one of Meyers/Kaut/Malgin back to Loveland where they belong.

Lehky/Mack/Mikko
Vrana/Rod/Malgin
Hook/JTC/Kaut
Cogs/Helmo/LOC

Healthy

Landy/Mack/Nuke
Vrana/Rod/Mikko
Lehky/JTC/Hook
Cogs/Helm/LOC

It would also make it easier to trade someone for 2C.

Imagine trading Hook + 1st + prospect for Horvat and keeping Vrana

Landy/Mack/Nuke
Vrana/Horvat/Mikko
Lehky/Rod/JTC
Cogs/Helmo/LOC

That said, I can't see him falling all the way to the Avs. Someone else below them will claim him.

If you're talking purely on the ice... Vrana isn't overpaid. He hasn't played many games, so the sample is small... with the Wings, 32 points in 39 games. He's a 2 time 20 goal scorer and nearly did it in 20-21 in 50 games. He's a good 2nd line player. His pacing is roughly equal to a 55 point guy over a full season. That is easily worth 5.25m.

His off the ice issues are more of the concern and with maybe 10 teams that can fit him with LTIR and maybe 3-4 that can fit him without... I don't think he gets claimed. If he can stay on the ice, he's a worthwhile 2nd liner.

If I was the Avs, I'd think long and hard about it. He can replace what Burkie brought.

Vrana is the player I wish Newhook could become, but I don't think Newhook is quite fast enough to play that game.

Vrana's clearly going through some serious off ice issues. Whatever the case, wish him the best. He always seemed like a good guy from his days in Washington.

Full commit to one last shot this year. Kucherov Landy, claim Vrana and then trade for Horvat at 50%+ and deal with the fallout this off-season lol.

I don't have the numbers but apparently Vrana's conditioning stint in Grand Rapids did not go well. Perhaps it's erroneous to make the parallel but that reminds me of the end of Chris Stewart's tenure in Colorado. Broke his hand literally punching Kyle Brodziak in the helmet (repeatedly) and then, according to Terry Frei, did not exactly show the level of commitment they wanted to see during his off-ice rehab. He was sent on his merry way for EJ not long after.

Feels like something else is going on in New York. Laf is about as can’t miss of a prospect as you can get. Not saying he should be putting up point per game but he’s better than a 30 point bottom 6 player.
