Laf was a consensus #1 pick. And he started to come onto his own during the playoffs. But Kotkaniemi was a total off the boards pick, and he was drafted purely because Canadiens wanted a center. He was projected at like 10th I think? And then they made the mistake of rushing him into the NHL. I hope they don't do the same for Slafkovsky.
How is that even relevant? Wright isn't out of left field.

Do you think Lafreniere's struggles worked against Wright, who had been the consensus #1 himself? Do you think this was purely about Wright or about people also being spooked because they were wrong (so far) on Lafreniere?

Doesn’t matter. By the way, who is “they”? Are you referring to the guy who drafted Kotkaniemi or the guy who drafted Lafreniere over Stützle?

Disclaimer: I’m not asserting that Lafreniere was a bad pick. He has time to turn it around. But that’s a separate issue where the perception of Gorton is concerned.
The Montreal Canadiens organization.

How about before this year?
Oh does this year not count? 33 points in 42 playoff games ain’t bad. Especially for an undersized winger. But to answer your question the only bad year he has had in the playoffs is 2018/2019 against the avs. He is an absolute magician at 5v5. His disappearing in the playoffs is so over exaggerated.

Oh he's not "thinking" it Some team is probably salivating at giving him 11 mil aav on a long term deal. 100 point scorers don't grow on trees. He picked the perfect year to break out.
It’s not that much of a breakout really. He had 98pts and a top 10 Hart finish a couple years ago.

Breakout was the wrong term. I should have said he picked the perfect year to re-establish himself as being viewed as one of the games better players. 1st 40 goal and 100 or better point season.

That is going to make a team with scoring needs drop a bag on him.

If you really think they're only 7 points apart in terms of value to a team, go right ahead.

Johnny Gaudreau to me is no more than an 8M player and that is the absolute max I would go.
McDavid, unless he either forces his way out via trade or leaves via FA is not attainable. Gaudreau is a player coming off a 40 goal, 100+ point season and all he would cost to acquire is salary.
The question for a team who needs scoring punch is not if he’s close to McDavid’s level. The question is how much better does he make your team vs what you can realistically gain elsewhere?

That was no accident or coincidence. He knew he wanted to have a big year and and sign elsewhere as a UFA likely in Philadelphia.

What about the past 2 years prior to this one? His 'gear' goes from under a point per game to a 115 point season??

now I wouldn’t argue he’s better than Mcdavid. But he did put up more 5v5 points, with much less icetime per game. 8M would have his agent fired and never working in the industry again

I don't read too much in the past 2 years. Tkachuk and Lindholm both had career or rebound seasons as well after so so previous 2 seasons.

Between Gaudreau and Forsberg, who just signed for 8 years at $8.5m AAV, I'd rather have Gaudreau.

If Johnny B Gaudreau wants 10+ long term he can expect to toil in mediocrity the remainder of his days. That contract will be an anchor and soon...as well as preventing his signing team from finding him help which he will need cuz he’s not that type of player

There is one thing that doesn't sit well with me since the Cup win and it's this :

Can you imagine if the Avs had gone on to lose Game #6 with that f***ing officiating shit-show in the 2nd period where TB indisputably deserved at minimum at least 6 minutes in penalties and only got a 2 minute minor???

I mean, there is no way we don't get called for an ankle slash on Manson if Manson's doing the slashing to a TB player and there is no way Landeskog doesn't get at least an unsportsmanlike penalty if he's shooting the puck directly at a ref. (LOL - as if they'd actually give him a chance to apologize)

The officiating was bad and way too easily influenced by the now 'former' champs. They are f***ing lucky the Avs ended up winning that game in the end. You CANNOT make 1/3 of the calls because you're afraid to get yelled at by the opposing coach, fans or whatever especially after the way you made a fluff call on the Avs, at home, in a 1 goal game with less than 3 minutes to go in Game #5.

TB got the majority of the calls go their way during the series and that Game #5 too many man penalty was about as big of a joke call as you can get. It was the equivalent of giving a crying baby a bottle.

Yeah games 5 and 6 were some of the worst officiating I've ever seen. And those were supposed to be the two best refs this year officiating elimination games in the finals.

I still don't understand how you can bitch at moan at the officials all series, and then on a perfectly legal play where you get scored on, slash Manson as hard as they did, and then intentionally shoot the puck at the ref without getting a call. They worked the refs like crazy to get a big advantage, and that's how they repaid them?

I can't imagine how livid I would have been if the Avs went on to lose. Officials and their bosses should be absolutely embarrassed at the job they did, but they won't be because there's zero accountability for being bad at their jobs.
