2022-2023 Around the League Part Deux

F*** me Ryan Hartman with an insanely dirty hit on Nikolaj Ehlers. Puck nowhere near Ehlers, guy steps up and throws an open ice hit on an unsuspecting guy. Then in the post-game he says he threw the hit intentionally to send a message because the Jets were apparently targeting Kaprizov last time the two teams played.

Man if I'm the NHL, not only is that an insanely dirty hit but the guy is admitting after the game to wanting to throw that hit. I'd throw the book at Hartman but DoPS probably gives him a fine.
Would be a shame if whatever slimeball Mild player that Pionk cross checked was also injured.

It's nuts the dude completely outed himself lol.

By the way this is yet another instance where the whole myth of the goon as a "deterrent" is complete and utter bullshit. In fact, Evason put Reaves out there precisely to escalate the violence, not to deter it.

There's only one way to deter dirty plays in hockey and that's to throw the book at repeat offenders or any egregious acts. But we all know the league will never let DoPS do that.

Is it messed up that I kinda like that the Wild got a taste of their own medicine? They're like the bully no one is actually afraid of lol.

Yet I don't blame the Wild for sending the message either.

I'll give it to you in this instance, it just started more shit, and didn't deter anything.

Thankfully Bednar's grinder brain stops at instigating shit.

That's how brazen they can be now, they don't care because they know there will be no lasting consequences.

I absolutely DO blame the Wylde for that "retaliatory" gesture. Going after Nikolaj Ehlers does nothing to solve the issue. You're just going to piss off the other team even more and it'll just lead to more star players getting hurt. If they saved their "vengeance" for Logan Stanley (whom I am assuming did not play because he's a useless pylon) then I'd be more understanding. But to target something who had nothing to do with it is unacceptable.

Suspend him for the game he was going to sit anyway. What would we do without DOPS?

Yep. They do juuuuuuuuust enough to try and avoid any future liability. They don't ever want DoPS to do their job, they just want them to appear that they're doing their job.

Is it just me, or does interference not really describe what happened here?

Does it qualify for charging? Probably not boarding, don't care enough to watch the hit lol.

You're just pointing out they don't have a clear cut rule against hunting players down and knocking them down aren't you? Unsportsmanlike conduct would be a nice way to put it.

I don't know, was Ehlers just a bystander in the wrong place at the wrong time? I don't think the hunter told us why he picked that target. Maybe it was just an easy target though.

And yeah, he definitely is going to enjoy his mandatory rest period of one game.

I see now the hit wasn't completely unprovoked and out of nowhere, he laid a hit on Kaprizov in the attacking zone prior to that cheap shot. Was it a bit late? Yeah, but those "finishing the check" type of hits happen in 100% of all NHL games. It was also clean, no head shot, no elbows sticking out, etc.

Still, if we're singling out dirty players, Nik Ehlers is definitely way down on my list.

The extension for Carter is the one that blows my mind. You sign a guy like THAT for one year, tops.

But I can see why they did what they did. New ownership group came in and did not have any wish to oversee a rebuild, especially, if, as has been reported, they wanted to consolidate all their sports franchises and create a streaming service.

My real question isn't regarding Hextall--I think we all know he's terrible at his job. What's Brian Burke's excuse? He's the guy who needs to step in and say "No, we're not doing that," but he didn't stop Ron from using the cap savings from the Kapanen bailout on an even worse contract in Granlund. Like, why are you there, bro?

I'm starting to doubt that those executives really run the show behind the scenes. Guys like Sakic, Burke and Gorton in Montreal probably let their GM do their things.

There are some instances where the president is just a figurehead type, like Rutherford in Carolina (he literally came out and said "No one answers to me") and Holland in Detroit, and we all know how long those respective gigs lasted.

There's also the other end of the spectrum where the president obviously exerted a ton of power, like Lacroix did when when Giguere and Sherman were runnin' the show...or weren't as the case may have been.

But in this case I don't think Burke was just brought in with no actual authority. For starters, Burke ain't taking a job like that. It's clear he was brought in as a go-between for Hextall since he did not handle the more public aspects of the job (interactions with ownership/upper management, fans and media) well at all during his time in Philly. Same with Gorton and Sakic as well--they don't handle day-to-day operations anymore but they most certainly have a say in the overall direction of the franchise. And that's where Burke appears to have failed. He should've been the guy who saw what was coming and stopped it.

Yeah, I was pointing out that interference seems like such a minor thing. I would think in this case it should be at least called roughing, indicating that this was an aggressive/violent move not just run of the mill staying in someone else's lane.

I totally forgot about roughing lol. Even that sounds PC. Targeting, or like the other dude said. Assault, but Assault isn't Assault it's battery. 🤣

Yes. Assault is the threat with the perception (by the one threatened) that it can be carried out. But that's a small detail and sometimes others write the jokes. 😂

I sure hope the Avs can get the Kraken. This is the most turnover prone "good" team I have seen in awhile. Can't get out of their zone, can't get pucks deep, defenders at the point giving pucks away. A disciplined team is going to beat them easily.
My buddy in seattle pre-emptively bought 1st round tickets in case the match-up happens
