Those might be doable, and probably.worth it, but the question is how do you then solve the 2C issue after trading those assets for a goalie?

Assuming Nichuskin and Lehkonen are retained with term our top of the lineup would be looking good for a few years, except for a 2C (and maybe 2RHD if Girard is moved). I'd have confidence in the pro scouts continuing to find guys who can fill out the bottom 6 chraply (eg. Nieto, Comeau, NAK, Helm, Cogliano, Sturm, Meyers, etc), but that 2C spot would be crucial albeit hard to fill after an expensive Gibson trade.

Landeskog - Mackinnon - Nichuskin
Lehkonen ------- 2C ------ Rantanen

Toews - Makar
Byram - Girard

Gibson

He'll be an UFA in a year, so yes he will have a choice.
IMO if you can make a trade for John Gibson the 2C position becomes less important to fill immediately. He can propel the team with his level of play.

Potentially.

Unless my memory is crazy (possible) I remember Anaheim being on a great run to start the season last year and it was in very large part due to Gibson and his outstanding play. I didn't really pay attention the rest of the way so I was kind of surprised that his stats ended up not being so great. So I guess the questions are : was he worn out? Is he just streaky? Was this high level of play just unsustainable?

When he's on his game, he's really good that's for sure.

I've said it before but the Avs should figure out which goalies are best with a low-shot workload and target one of those guys, imo.

I don’t think his chances of winning a cup are that much lower if he goes to UFA as opposed to staying here.
Landeskog, Rantanen, Nichushkin. Norris Trophy winner Cale Makar. Where can he land that will put him with this much talent?

Could it happen? Certainly. But I've been around long enough in my life, and watching hockey and other sports, to recognize when a special group of talented people comes together that it is a unique and rare opportunity. All I am saying is Nate is part of such an opportunity, and he is part of a collection of talent that doesn't come around often.

Not saying this isn’t a special group. But there’s been a lot of very talented teams that have only gotten to 1 SCF or even none. Getting to cup final is really really hard, so who knows if the Avs get here again. I think the chances are higher here than the average team.

Why not? If he does leave Pittsburgh and wants another cup there are worse places to go than Colorado.

Nah, Malkin goes to WSH to play with his Russian buddy Ovi, especially if Backstrom's hip surgery and rehab doesn't go well, which is a very good posibility.

I could see MacKinnon taking $10M instead of $12M

I could see that too, same contact as Barkov and Eichel (still top15 most expansive contract in the league). If Mack is true to his word he wants to stay competitive with this core, Joe can go in and say, look, Kane and Toews took 10.5m after winning cups, but that gutted their teams after and haven't been successful since those contracts were signed.
