Nice to find the replay. At the time it didn't look like a particularly dirty hit to me, Luke Schenn went easy on him too. Upon reflection it looks like less of a dirty hit, Schenn didn't take any strides.

He could've *easily* gotten injured off this hit.

Wasn't dirty at all. It was straight to the chest. It was late though, as Slafkovsky had already passed off at this point, which is why Schenn got 2 minutes.

The puck was like 3 feet from Slaf. I think it was a post-hoc judgement to call it a pen. Those hits happen every game, night in night out. It's a borderline interference at best. I'd be livid if it was a playoff OT game and this hit got my team on the PK.

It's a one count. That's it. And, everyone knows playoff refereeing is crap. Our series versus Vegas was complete crap. Dangerous hit after dangerous hit was allowed. Weber got face planted into boards with no call. Took revenge later on in game. Still no call.

If playoffs were refereed like regular season, Leafs would probably be Stanley Cup champs by now.

I mean some of these are predatory hits too. Schenn got an interference penalty last night off his hit.

McDavid didn't win the Calder Trophy when he was a rookie. Why? Because he took a bad hit, and was taken out for the year. He even was told that he had been hurt on purpose.

Jack Hughes talked about all the shit talking he got on the ice as a rookie, and how he felt targeted.

Some of it is Slafkovsky not having played in an NA style game, and needing to be more aware, and some of it is just thugs (ex. Brown) trying to get after the kid.
My problem with the hit from last night is how late he picked up Schenn. You can see it with the way he lifts his head last second. He’s hyper focused on making a great play and not to what’s happening around him at the same time. If he does eventually learn, I hope to see a lot of guys bouncing off of him when he braces. Problem is he’s playing a wreckless game in the meantime that could see him getting hurt. He’s playing with fire right now. It just takes the one hit that concusses him that could cause problems long term.

Yeah, he needs to be more watchful. Like I said in game thread, you can tell he played in Liiga. He's a big target, and doesn't have the experience of playing in a highly physical league.

It wasn't a head hit though, and I expect he was just winded. He needs to be more protective of himself physically, start anticipating these hits, and start reversing them.

I agree with what you’re saying. I said in a previous post to the people thinking things will change in this regard if he’s sent to a place like the AHL that it likely won’t. I think it’s making decisions not only at NHL speed but the speed in general on a smaller ice surface in NA with less space. If he doesn’t fix the core problem, it won’t matter if it’s NHL, AHL, or CHL, they’ll still clean his clock. And the guys in the AHL are still grown men who will be looking to level him if his heads down.

He needs to work on shoulders/neck strength that will help a lot. Guhle needs more upper body strength too. They need to start drilling him on watching for players coming at him.

Keeping your head up is the number one rule in hockey, not sure why he hasn't learned that yet. It's happening way too often. Suzuki and CC never put themselves in that position and a behemoth like Slaf shouldn't be getting lit up this much. At least he's been able to come back not long after but at some point if this keeps up it will get ugly.

He’s still adapting - NHL game is so much faster for read & react, and there are many as big or bigger dudes than Slaf in the league

I don't like him flopping like he isn't allowed to get hit. Just get up and look at the number and get back in there.

Fixed that for you

I completely agree it was clean. If it hadn't been, Slafkovsky would have been hurt.

It was a second too late, which is why he got an interference penalty. Slafkovsky no longer had the puck. If Schenn had hit him while Slafkovsky actually had the puck, there is no penalty.

If you want a good drinking game, chug your drink anytime slaf has one hand on his stick. You'll be hammered halfway though his 1st shift haha

He got hit less than a second after, not interference, not a penalty and not late. Ref made a call bases on slaf laying on the ice. At least we can finally agree it was clean

Blind side hit and Schenn knew what he was doing. Sometimes I think younger player who have size are targeted more because dumb dumb depth guys like Schenn think the kid can handle it. I think he avoids hitting Caufield if there was a similar play cause he would kill him and get in more trouble.
