I've said it before but the weight discussion is so silly to me. It really shows just how low the athletic floor is for hockey that 6'3 238 on a guy who's still visibly skinny when you just look at a picture of him is being treated like an inherent problem.

6'3 238 is too heavy for the typical 6'3 NHL player, but that does not mean it is too heavy for players who are actually athletically gifted. The NFL is full of guys who are 6'3 238 or much heavier who play as RB/big WRs or DE/OLBs and are faster and more agile than the vast majority of hockey players. Hockey is a sport where Gaudreau or Pettersson or Marner can be superstars, the NHL does not exactly select for the best athletes on the planet so it doesn't really make sense to treat NHL averages and conventions as some ironclad law where we have to measure every player's BMI against Max Pacioretty.

And why are they not similar ? Both were picked in the same position and its exactly the scenario you're describing where there's a significant discrepancy between both players.
No the situations aren’t the same at all. They’re not even close and Hischier has been the better player. Makar was never in the running. I don’t even know what you are trying to say here. If it’s that the 1OA isn’t always the best player in the draft, well, we all know that already.

Of course not.

But using his performance in those games to make far-reaching conclusions about his career, is the real issue.
Except no one is doing this.

To me he looks too heavy. I think he needs to shed some weight to help with his speed.

I don’t think he plays at any less than 240 ever, except maybe this season.

As for speed, he can be super successful without changing a thing. To me, he looks clearly faster than Latendresse and others. And as far as I’m concerned i’d take the slowest, HHOF Andreychuck, over the fastest ever, Sami Kapanen.

Pretty sure I heard Byfuglien admit he took it up to 300lbs at some point. There’s a guy I wanted on the habs so bad.

He’s caught up to so many guys back checking so far skating seems like a strength if anything. Solid on his skates too. Just needs games.

He has straight line speed once he gets going but he lacks quickness / explosiveness. I am not sure he can develop that but will see.

The thing with big guys that are good stickhandlers, is they have much more time and space than a regular player with the same skating ability/speed. You don’t only need to catch them, you need to take the puck from them. And there’s a very big body and a very long stick between you and the puck.

No doubt in my mind that Slaf can produce at a higher pace than that as soon as this year. If he makes the team, what I think he will, they are going to play him with offensive players and use him on a PP wave.

For alot of people, the standarts are pretty low right now and thats a good thing.

I think he'll be in the AHL, Hughes comments were meant to prepare the market for that. I'd go even further. they never had even the intent of playing him in the NHL. 2022's are not mature players in general, because of Covid. A year in the AHL, a stable year that is, will do wonders.

I‘ve seen the same clips as everyone. I read the tea leaves differently. I think they’re much more inclined to keep him in the NHL right now.

You're not making any sense. The 2017 had exactly the same separation between 1 and 2 according to Mackenzie i.e. 5 scouts to 4 scouts. It was deemed the Patrick draft all along, until Hischiers significant rise to the top, despite relatively low numbers for a 1st OA (hmmmm, ring a bell?). Ateast 3 players in that top 4 had a team who deemed them number 1, so anyone could have been drafted at any of those spots. At least two teams had Makar 1st. Pettersson was 2 for at least 1 team.

So, we have a clear example of a 60 point player picked ahead of a Norris/Conn Smythe winning defenseman who paced for 90 points, in a draft where a number of players could have been 1st. Pretty much the scenario you were describing. It might even be worse, as Makars arguably been playing like a generational defenseman. NJ went with the guy who was mostly seen as the number 1, but not unanimously. Did NJ drop the ball or not ? By your logic the answer should be yes

You might be right, we will see, but I think Hughes only commented on his first 2 games, he also commented on his 2 inter squad games, which ones he said he looked pretty good, the foward with the most scoring chances.

I think Slaf's level will go upward from now.
