I'm being realistic though.

Slaf didn't look great in his 2 pre-sason games. He looked great in 1 rookie tournament game though, showed nice flashes there.

Maybe next game he will show us more, similar to some moves he pulled in rookie tournament.

I didn't like Wright, in fact I kept saying he looked so boring to watch, etc. However I will say, Kraken highlights from 2 days ago, he looked decent.
Maybe you (we) just need to stop predicting the outcome of his career, after every game, based on his performance, in that game.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't or can't criticize the guy or aspects of his game that he needs to work on.

He's going to have good periods this year and bad ones...its part of the process, sometimes it's OK to just see how things play out.

We don't have to prophesize after every game.

Bing.GO.

There are a NUMBER of previous #1 overalls that CLEARLY should of started AHL at 18 instead of NHL

Like.. a ridiculously high % too
I didn't really get the whole story, I was busy cooking so I only got parts, but I found it was interesting and I'm sure Slaf is what started it.

I concur.

It's just fun to speculate and shoot the sh*t, after all we're on a forum, this is what it's all about.

I heard something interesting on RDS. There are no first round picks who got sent down to the minors, in a long while. I didn't get the exact statement. The only exception is Nail Yakupov, but he was just a bust.
The big difference is that the majority of first overalls are usually drafted from the CHL and in that case it's either NHL or back to the CHL, with Slaf we have the option to start him in the AHL.

I mean, I guess Owen Power wasn’t a 1st OA pick and didn’t play in college last year?

Are we also to forget how most draftees can’t play in the AHL the season after their draft?

Stop watching RDS.

You said he wasn't good...Hughes said was underwhelming (lets not remix words)...I said he was fine...other posters said he was good or bad or fine, etc.

What's your point though?

Who cares about the freakin’ preseason lol

There's no selective reading, I'll repeat it because you seem to keep glossing over it.

I've got no issues with YOUR takes about Slafkovsky other than I find you’re a bit premature with some of your criticisms.

It doesn't make them wrong, just premature.

But either way man...do you I guess lol
Hughes exact words were “underwhelming for who he is”

We will all have to be patient with Slaf. The guy could really become our best forward in like 3 or 4 seasons. Lafleur became a star at his fourth season. His first three years are forgettable.

But I am scared that not only some will compare him to Wright every occasions they have, but some might even compare him to KK and his 30 some points in his first season. KK was looking better than him in preseason games.
KK was sheltered in his first pre-season and season with the Habs (and most of the next two). Slaf haven't been sheltered so far. The two lines he played on faced against the opposing team top lines/dpair both games and he had almost no ozone starts.

And I wouldn't say that KK was looking better in his first pre-season games outside him being less raw over basic stuff. I remember KK not moving his feet when he didn't have the puck, being late on plays and not backchecking that much. He made the big club because he improved over the pre-season and his 9 games.

Slaf has already shown improvements since camp started, he might look a lot less raw in the next two weeks.

I don’t want to get out of sorts because it’s way too early.

That being said, in the two games I’ve watched of him it left me completely unimpressed.

He seems to be pretty far away from being NHL ready. I would start him in the AHL regardless of how the remainder of preseason goes.

Well you and him are two pee pees in a pod

no one wants to hear you talk about how an 18 year old is shit and your pick was the right one

Slaf was my pick.

Go read ALL of my posts and don't cherry pick based on 1-2 of them.

Thanks.

Careful, don't say that, the white knights will come headhunting for ya.

Nobody in their right mind is concerned about Slafkovsky he's only 18 years old.
People who didn’t want to pick him 1st overall likely are concerned.

I’m one of those people. I was eagerly waiting to see how he’d do in preseason, and he’s left me wanting more.

I get it, it’s early and it’s not something to be concerned with yet. But it’s what we have to judge him on right now, and it’s not flattering.

It doesn’t mean anything for the long term

Exactly.

It is what it is.

We're just being honest and real about it.

If he impresses in the next 2 games then that's awesome... but it is what it is, and it doesn't mean he doesn't become a beast in 1-2-3-4-5 years from now either.

100% not going to read your posts but how does it feel to have picked the wrong guy?

Who was the Wright guy?

If that's who you think was the Wright guy.. he's boring ZzZzZzzZz.

Slaf will become a beast, eventually....... *fingers crossed*

This exact type of immediate overreaction is why I cannot be bothered to take certain posters seriously at all. It's like reading a comedy every day or two when I get home from work.
Heck, if one accepts the over reactions here as gospel, one would wonder why Slafkovsky was even drafted in the first round.

Exactly. We all knew he was raw, Hughes himself said "We're not picking the best 18 years old, we're picking the best future hockey player".

He's raw, it is what it is. No point in rushing him, we're not winning anything this year anyways. AHL it is for at least one year, maybe 2, who knows.

He clearly has the tools, he needs to put it together. Give him tons of ice time. To be honest I'm happy, I'll go see him in Laval for not even 10% of the price of tickets in Montreal. I hope Mesar is there, too.

I agree.

I think having Slaf and Mesar “buddy-up” together in Laval could be a great thing for both players, so long as the coaching staff and vets make sure they stay out of trouble.

There’s some tantalizing potential there with Slaf, you can see he’s got great skating for a guy his size and his ability to read plays is solid as well. Even though I criticized the pick, I’m not worried about the player. I think he becomes at worst a 55-60pt power winger.
