Why is everyone so fixated on Slaf's weight? lol

Did he look slow an out of shape to you in the rookie scrimmage? He looked the opposite. If i didn't know his height / weight, i would have assumed 6'4 200 lbs. He doesn't look like Big Buff.

I though Slaf skated well and displayed skill. He overplayed situations (like 1 on 5) and made blind passes for turnovers. In a rookie game, you are trying to create and showcase your offense (if you are an offensive player) which is what he was doing.

The keys to be were:

1. He's not slow. (see the play where he set up Mesar's goal)
2. He plays big.
3. He's not comfortable on the small ice (as of yet). See the play where he cut to the middle and got hit.
4. He's got good hands.
5. He has good offensive instincts.
6. He cheated a bit too much waiting for chips off the boards rather than supporting the play.

The first 2 points were the most important for a burgeoning power forward.

In terms of the losing weight thing, keep in mind noones putting on 10 pounds of muscle in a couple of months. Clearly that wasn’t all good weight. Also I did notice Slaf looking a little gassed towards the end of that game. Don’t think playing at 240 this season is the plan lol. Imagine he’s closer to 225 by the start of the season.

He was officially weighed twelve months ago as a 17 year old kid at 229 with TPS Turku. I looked for it, but never found his Combine weight. Is there another legit weigh in? The next official weigh in I’m sure actually happened is the recent 238. He was probably 225 as a 16 year old kid. It’s absolutely impossible to go back to that.

It's entirely possible that the kid hasn't stopped growing. Most of the draft sources had him listed between 225-228 at the beginning of last year's draft cycle which was exactly a year ago. His Combine weight came right after the World Championships which came right after Liiga's playoffs. Usually playing weights are down a bit at the end of the season.

Where’s his Combine weight? I have all the other prospects Combine measurements. Not Slaf. As far as I know it doesn’t exist.

Cause some people just need to bitch about something

Habs have a whole coaching staff and trainers to look at this stuff, if they want him at 225 he will be, if they want him at 238 he will be and if they want him at 250 then so be it. This isn’t Keith Tkachuk coming into camp after completing the ‘Super Size Me’ diet in the offseason, it’s Ivan Drago stepping into the ring with Creed

That 225 and 228 probably came from Slaf’s agent or Slaf. Unless those numbers can be linked to an actual weigh in, they’re about as accurate as Slaf saying he weighed about 230 to reporters when he was weighed just the day before at 238. As far as I know, he only gained 9 pounds in 12 months (from 229 to 238) which is perfectly normal and healthy for an athlete that turned 18.

Never said otherwise.. and I am no kids. Jagr/Ovechkin are freak of nature. They are cyborg. They never break.

I think that’s what they see in Slafkovsky. He may never reach that type of peak, lets be honest those two guys go down in history as the two best wingers to ever play the game.

But if Slafkovsky can be that durable as a PPG forward for 15-20 years, it’s HOF material.

Amen! I watched the Caps cup run and Lars was definitely a very big part of that success. a very good player indeed. The Bergevin era was certainly not known for its player development but no one suffered greater than Larry Eller. Trotz had him on the ice late in every period when stress set into games, Lars was always sent over the boards when the team needed safety/preservation.

...yup, as opposed to when good ol' Davey used to cause a 3-on-2 or a 2-on-1 the other way and would, instead of getting back defensively, slowly skate to the bench and hop over just before a goal against was scored against, so Larry would take the dash, even though he just jumped on the ice to get back and defend...

...Lars may not have had the best Hockey IQ in the World, but he was an important part of the young players on the team and was screwed nightly by Therrien...he was the fifth player to lift the Cup when Washington won, as a show of just how important he was to the Caps team that won it...traded for two late 2nds so we could have a spot for Andrew f**kin' Shaw...wonderful asset management...:banghead:

Also, often when there is a concern about a player's weight, it is a concern about their commitment to fitness and work ethic. In Slaf's case, this is not a concern.

And, if he is too bulky, I'm sure he'll be willing to engage in a fitness program to get his body into the kind of shape, whether that be leaner or more muscular in certain areas, that the team sees as appropriate.

Fanbase is wild. He's heavy, I dont think, and I believe he even said, he wouldnt be playing at this weight during the year. The kid put on size to come in to camp, to compete. He hasnt played games in quite some time. He'll play much lighter than that. His commitment to being the best hockey player he can be is all we should be judging. If it was an issue im positive management can handle it better than hfboards saying hes too heavy.

Exactly my point. He's a very big teenager still going through normal growth.

For some reason, Slaf seems to have done only the team interviews, nothing else.
Slaf didn't do any of the physical stuff at the Combine because he just finished at Worlds and was likely banged up. He did get weighed at Habs development camp right after the draft and tipped the scales at 227 lbs.
